My wife and stayed at the ATLANTICA AENEAS RESORT AND SPA for 7 nights from the 25th July to the 2nd August.
This is not a 5 star hotel for the following reasons.
Reception – overall very efficient and friendly enough
Rooms - Overall our room was adequate for our needs – nothing special, but very clean – the maids worked very hard and our room was always cleaned on time, with the exception of the balcony area which was never cleaned the whole week we were there. We had a swim up room as a free upgrade which had just been renovated and was very nice, apart from the quarter inch gap under the front door that let all the ants into our room. Swim up room cost around £300 extra for the week – and in our opinion not worth the extra you would have to pay. Room Safes – in all the 5 star hotels we have stayed in, we have never had to pay for a room safe – this was an optional extra here – at 2.50 Euros per day
Poolside - There were a number of repairs going on during our stay – noticeably around the pool, where each day we watched a pool attendant standing in the pool, sawing little bits of white plastic and sticking them into the overflow grid – unfortunately the rest of the plastic grid around the pool was very discolored, so the new bits stood out like a sore thumb. Instead of cutting little bits to fill in the gaps, the pool attendant could have replaced the whole length of plastic grid in one go – this would have taken about 10 minutes instead of a week and would have been much more presentable - pool repairs should never be done with guests in the pool.
Towels – these should be available at the pool – instead you had to exchange a voucher for 2 towels at the health and fitness club. You keep your towels for the length of your stay or you have to traipse to the health club for an exchange. Towels were smaller than the sunbed and didn’t cover them completely.
Poolside Umbrellas – some looking very worn - a number of them had been repaired by trying to stitch the fabric back together – some were very tatty.
Sunbeds – every 5 star resort we have stayed in provide high quality sunbeds with waterproof mattresses – the ones around the pool were the cheap plastic and nylon variety. A number of guests were “booking beds” by putting towels on them by 7am, and not returning until the end of the day - getting a sunbed after 8:30am was virtually impossible.
Around the pool a number of tiles were missing and “patch up” repaired has been attempted.
During the course of the day a pool attendant would attempt to clean the pool using a long pole and a substantial length of pipe – this was whilst guests were swimming in the pool! – Pool cleaning should take place when there are no guests in the pool.
Lifeguards – very worrying was the fact there were no lifeguards at this (or any other hotel pools) we visited – not sure if this is just a cost cutting exercise, but in my opinion every pool should have lifeguards.
Noise - every day during our stay we had a 6am wake-up call when one of the golf cart type buggies stops outside our door and reverses back up the path with the reversing alarm sounding, also what sounded like a fire alarm could be heard on to mornings around 5am.
Restaurant Food & Staff – Meals during our stay was excellent with plenty of options and varied each evening, breakfast was also very comprehensive. I read a lot about the senior Maître de - Spyros, who could come across as very welcoming, although in my opinion a lot of what he said was just usual blarney – I’m amazed at how many reviewers fall for such small talk and consider Spyros as almost a personal friend – I heard the “welcome to paradise” line so many times during our stay, it did make me chuckle. More worrying however was the way the senior long term waiters appeared to bully the young, mainly Romanian waiters – to the point that we witnessed one young lady burst into tears! The young waters/waitresses were the unsung heroes, in my opinion, running around with sweat soaking their shirts, trying to please everyone. The other point we noticed is the lack of designated smoking and non-smoking areas within the restaurant, we would sit down and start our meal, only to find two or three tables around us light up and smoke, ruining our meal. We were never given the option to eat inside, but after a few ruined breakfasts and dinners, we requested this, as there was a no smoking rule in operation in all indoor areas.
Overall for Cyprus standards this is a nice 4 star hotel, good location opposite Nissi Beach and about a half hours walk into the mad place called Aiya Napa – we hired a car for 2 days to check out the areas , which was OK.
Our stay was acceptable, but for not much more you could visit Dubai – where you get real 5 star hotels and service – I don’t think we will be rushing back to Cyprus in a hurry!
