We found Sao Gabriel as a recommendation from our guidebook, and it did not disappoint.
The dining area is quite elegant. It is set in a garden with flowers and lanterns to light the area. The place settings were very tasteful. The waitstaff were extremely welcoming, and had a friendly and unpretentious air. It was obvious that they recognized specific regular customers and addressed them personally.
For our meal we started with blue-fin tuna, and had lamb and turbot (a white fish) for our main courses. All were delicious. What we liked most about the food was that the waitstaff explained each element in detail so that you understood the tastes and how they had been prepared. Special attention was paid to the side accompaniments of each dish, which we appreciated.
Perhaps what truly sold us on Sao Gabriel were the extras that they included. When we first sat down they brought to the table a selection of breads, two butters, and Portuguese olive oil. They also provided an amuse-bouche of scallops. After dessert, they brought a selection of small treats to finish. All of these extras were complements of the house.
A lovely dinner - our best meal in the Algarve, and a great way to end our trip.
