“Two Night Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

On arriving we were welcomed by very friendly, helpful staff. We were shown to our room which was one of their Superior Double Rooms . The room was very spacious with a very large on suite bathroom, they were both very clean and comfortable. The room did have a flat screen TV but the channels were limited, but enough for us. There was a decanter with some malt whiskey in it, enough for two tots each, nice touch. We had our evening meal in their cosy little bar where again the staff were very friendly, and the meals that we had were very nice and reasonably priced. The main restaurant meals also looked to be of a high standard, and good quantities served. Breakfast was of a high standard with a large choice to pick from on the menu. The hotel is located in a small village with a cluster of small thatched cottages and a church. In the church grounds there is a Yew tree reputed to be the oldest in Europe. When driving round the area to get to various castles and local historical sites we saw wild deer where ever we went.
The hotel was very quiet and peaceful we both had a good nights sleep. We had great views out the front of the hotel.
If the opportunity arises we would love to return.

I had stayed at the Fortingall Hotel in the past, some 2-3 years ago, and amazingly the excellent concierge remembered me. That nice touch simply adds to the very positive view of the staff or the Fortingall Hotel. We had travelled from Islay to Fortingall and August in Scotland you will pay handsomely for a good hotel. But if you are going to pay up, at least get your monies worth. Fortingall is set in a lovely location, something quite magical. The ancient Yew Tree adjacent to the hotel in a charming churchyard, lovely rural views, the pub which is part of yet separate from the hotel, lovely food, and very friendly service. Our room (Glen Lyon) had views over the countryside and thatched cottages next door. A short walk through the village, and a lovely sunset. Who said the weather in Scotland is terrible? Maybe I should not have written such a positive review of Fortingall because I will end up paying more on the next stay if this place gets discovered

My parents and I recently stayed in a wee cottage in Fortingall and were delighted to find this super hotel just along the road. We were greeted by friendly staff and a cosy fire. Our first night in Fortingall we ate in the restaurant and were very impressed with the beautiful food, very reasonably priced for its quantity and quality. The staff were excellent, polite and cheerful.
We enjoyed lunch in the lounge and spent every evening having a drink in the library or lounge beside the fire. Just perfect. We ate in the restaurant again on our final evening and thoroughly enjoyed the live music in the bar after our meal. Locals and guests alike made it a super atmosphere, amazing how many folk you can squeeze in The Ewe!
A special mention to Gavin and Emese who made our trip one to remember. Thank you so much, we'll definitely be back! :)

Following a delightful tour of the area, we arrived in Fortingall to admire the Yew. We then decided to lunch at Fortingall Hotel. Ordering from the light lunch menu, we chose locally sourced salmon and beef, in anticipation of quality produce. Unfortunately we were sadly disappointed. The standard did not meet our expectations or live up to your reputation as portrayed on line. The salmon was tasteless and unpalatable, and appeared to be end cuts, therefore most was left. The steak, being rather chewy and stringy, was not enjoyable.

The service we received could not be faulted, your reception and waiting staff were friendly and accommodating.

This hotel and where it is situated makes it a gem of the highlands. Our room looked toward Drummond Hill and was nicely furnished, spacious, comfortable and spotless, as was the ensuite. After exploring the village, a very pleasant afternoon was spent on a comfortable sofa, sometimes reading but mostly looking out the window at the changing moods of the highland scenery. The common rooms (library was my favourite) were tastefully decorated and welcoming. Staff were friendly and attentive to guests. Dinner was delicious and complimented by a small but nice selection of wines. However, beware the Fortingall Breakfast, it is huge! The only downside for us was we couldn't stay longer. Next time.........

Everyone here went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. The room was large and pleasant. The little village itself is charming. We also enjoyed the attached pub, which served satisfying food. Also, breakfast included the yummiest porridge I've ever tasted.

My wife and I have a timeshare at Kinloch Rannoch and know this area well.
We drove Glen Lyon this particular morning and stopped at Fortingall.
Saw the yew tree and re made our acquaintance with the church.
Seeing the A boards outside the hotel advertising 'a warm welcome awaits' we decided to stop for coffee.
BIG mistake!
On opening the front door we were confronted by a gentleman in a suit saying abruptly, 'yes, can I help you?' As if we had intruded into his private house. What a welcome! As a retired GM of many large hotels I found this to be the antithesis of hospitality as we were taught.
He grudgingly took our order for 2 coffees and we sat in the quiet lounge. Waitress very nice, but, boy, how to make people unwelcome!
On reading the other trip advisor comments, maybe we hit a bad day, but I was NOT impressed.
Surely small hotels like this need all the help they can get, and so should try and welcome people in the door? Is that so difficult?
