“Don't waste your time here!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

I got this camp trip for free with another package which is probably the best thing I have to say about it. The guys that run it are rude, miserable and appear to have a strong dislike for backpackers which encourages them to continuously threaten to keep your deposit. The 'dorm' accommodation is ok and the tents are what you'd expect but this is by no means roughing it...there is Internet access, a movie room and hot showers with flushable toilets! If you want a real bush camp experience this isn't it!! The canoe trip was fun though and the beach is worth it once you get there.

Booked in for an exciting 3 day/2night canoeing and camping trip at gagaju bush camp. Got picked up at the transit centre by David who ensured I had enough food for the 3 days out in the camp. David gave excellent background and knowledgeable information during the trip out to the bushcamp and couldn't have been more than helpful!! Got checked in by Andy at the camp and chilled for the day - picked my hammock for night one and got shown around the camp where everything is. The facilities are really good and it is a fantastic spot to go to to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life!!
Day 2 began with a 16km canoe up the river and I loved it!!! I was wiped out when I got back to camp but thoroughly enjoyed it and I can't even swim!! Picked a toasty tent for night 2 and night 3 and felt at home!!
Day 3 was a lesiurely canoe down the river and it's great fun in the canoes!!
The staff David and Andy could not have been more helpful and welcoming and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!! I did not want to leave it and I'm considering heading back to it as it really was the most enjoyable experience in Oz!!
Thank you David and Andy!!! xxxxxx

Gagaju Bush Camp

The Staff.

The camp seems to be run by a group of aged rednecks or bogans who haven’t grown out of their childhood bullying issues. Every evening we were greeted with threats towards our deposits and told that we should be ashamed for the way we behaving. The amusing part of this is that the staff itself was often drunk and aggressive. In the morning we were told that we had to clean up our mess. Fair enough except for the fact that a large part of the mess had been created a by staff member who not only knocked over several glasses of goon but then thought it would be a good idea to pee in the kitchen. Added to this one of the older staff members continued to drunkenly hit on younger women in a way that made all members of the camp very uncomfortable.

We were told that the curfew was midnight and then arbitrarily we spoken to like we children and that needed to leave the common area at about 11. Added to this was the fact that another group was making an equal amount of noise were ignored and left to their own devices.

When we went to leave we were told that we would not receive our deposit back until we had been given the kitchen a clean regardless of the fact that we had not used it in the morning and the evening had used only the bbq. As for the “guided tour” this consists of little more then a hungover older gentleman pointing and mumbling somewhat incoherently at a map for 10 minutes and then telling us that we had to clean the kitchen.

We were told that we would be going out in kayaks. The reality is that you’re sent out in canoes, which is fine except for the fact that if you’re told you’re getting steak and someone gives a hamburger you’re going to be upset. The camp itself immediately provokes images of the film Deliverance.

Also there is the rather uncomfortable 50 dollar fee that is meant to go to the parks which is at best sketchy. Most people were told that they would be spending their nights in dorms when in reality they are put into a room that closely resembles something a broken down shack. And just as you are getting comfortable there they take you and put you into leaky tents where you don’t get to keep your pillow.

We were lucky enough to have our car. Those people that didn’t have cars found the staff to be less then accommodating when trying to get back into town to catch their buses. The older gentleman that picked people up had a can of VB in his hand on arrival at the pick up location and those in vehicle told us that he continued to consume beer. Driving behind him, we noticed some erratic patterns that would indicate the driver was not in his best state.

So if you’re a fan of being talked to you like you’re a child and misled over what you’re experience will be then by all means please come to “goonagdu bush camp”.

As basically everybody who stays there we got this as a so called freebie when booking some tours through a travel agency.

We decided to give it a try and didn't regret it. I think it is a good place to experience a typical nature environment in Australia.

You get picked up and dropped of at the Greyhound station. The first night you sleep in comfortable hammock bunks in a large tent with a nice smell of incense.

The canoe trips are both nice in fact, yes, you go there by yourself, no it's not a major deal. I'm not a big fan of canoeing as I find it a bit boring but the places you go to are beautiful! So I would recommend sticking to their routes.

The 2nd and 3rd nights you spend in tents which aren't too bad, you get a very thin camping mat but no pillows and you can hire a sleeping bag for 5 bucks for the three days which I recommend taking.

The toilet is not too bad and you get used to it, same with the showers. There are insects but most are blocked by the incense. The showers are warm by the way!

So if you are a fan of camping or canoeing this is a must do, but also if you want a typical Aussie experience this is a cool place. Oddly, the kitchen was better equipped than many hostels I've passed and the movie room was cool as well!

Room Tip: If you dont have a prebooked "tour", stay in the dorms!

I went to Gagaju by accident, had one of the most amazing experiences of my life. It changed my life for ever. A peaceful environment where you can let your body regenerate, experiencing a quiet that is enhanced by having the river flowing right in front of you. Since it was in the bush and away from traffic it is very easy to forget what day it is. Whilst I was there, the kitchen was renovated, new dorms erected and as I understand it the property owners are on the verge of installing flushing toilets, damm wish I was still there. Canoe trips up and down the river every day, bushwalking and fishing, campfire every night and a large screen tv to watch movie marathons made it even more enjoyable

Gagaju Bush Camp is so cool, it’s a real bush camp in Australia, and I got to say, a must do experience. It is a welcomed change from hostels and a chance to experience something different. All of the staff are really friendly and helpful. This place has lots of character and is unique. The kitchen facilities are very clean and they had everything you needed. Don’t forget mosquito spray as it is the bush. www.GagajuBushCamp.com
