“Such good staff!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

We felt incredibly welcomed by the staff at the esplanade. Such a blessing. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. But what makes it are the staff, such a pleasure staying somewhere that welcomes you and nothing is any trouble.

Booked in for a business conference ... Won't be returning because of very indifferent customer service, average room cleanliness and amenities.

I had the unfortunate experience of being on the first floor on a Friday night when there was a function being held on the ground floor.

The clarity of the "doof doof" was astounding ... if you like your floor and bed vibrating, along with your ears!

A call to reception assured me that the volume would be turned down, but alas, it wasn't, so I am assuming the needs of the patrons who paid for the function are much more important than the needs of the poor buggers who paid for a room to experience a good night's sleep!

The lack of anything nearby resembling a shop or cafe was also an issue with the $27 house breakfast very average.

Avoid if you you can ... there are better alternatives!

Room Tip: As far as you can get from the ground floor.

I was booked at the Esplanade for a business trip but an unfortunate lack of communication meant that my booking had been cancelled and the travel agent had not notified me of the change. The Reception Staff at the Esplanade were outstanding in their assistance when I arrived on there doorstep after 8 hours of flights. They found me a room but as I had two other colleagues in similar circumstances they then rang the agent to clarify what had occurred, then rang the hotel that we had been booked into to ensure we had beds for the night there and then rang a taxi. I was sad to be leaving as the Esplanade looked clean, attractive and cool and the reception staff could not have been more helpful. Thank you very much.

We stayed here for 6 nights and found the place to be conveniently situated (near the swan river, Zoo and short drive into the city). Rooms were clean and comfortable albeit a bit of an odd decor in the form of old wooden furniture Balinese style despite the overall apartment being rather modern. Service was decent. We didn't eat here however so cannot comment on food quality. The only issue we had were with the extra charges that came with the baby cot (mind you its just a portable one), daily parking fee and exorbitant wifi charges!

Overall it was a good comfortable stay but don't forget to check the extra charges!!

Room Tip: get a room in the new wing as they looked better furnished.

This is a good place to stay if you are looking for a self-contained unit. We stayed for just one night. Our first urprise was that we found the address that is generally given does not register with our Tom Tom GPS. Make sure you put the place name as Como, not Perth. Melville Parade is divided by a large golf course and if you are on the wrong side of elville Parade you may have difficulty as it is not a particularly easy place to find being close to the Fremantle Freeway. We found that once we put in the suburb name we were okay. Fortunately there was no noise from the traffic on the Freeway.
The room was comfortable. Our room rate included breakfast and we can recommend it. Parking was free and that was appreciated. There was no free wi-fi in the room however. That is still a problem in Australia generally. Hotels in Australia have to realise that almost everywhere overseas, especially in tourist areas, free wifi is a standard expectation, particularly for business travellers. As a business traveller I am now actively booking hotels that have free wifi internet.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the Swan river is preferred. ask for this when you book if you wish such a room.

We stayed at the Esplanade River Suites for 2 nights in September 2013.

Our overall impression is that this is a clean and modern apartment hotel. We did not dine in the Pagoda Restaurant or use room service, so we cannot make comment on these services.

What we liked:

- Overlooking the Swan River. While the apartments are opposite a busy major road, when you are sitting on the couch or lying in bed, you cannot see the road or traffic.

- The hotel room (two bedroom apartment) was spacious and clean. Room decor was OK, but starting to show signs of wear, such as the carpet and couch coverings. Layout was excellent. Double bedrooms on either side of the lounge/dining/kitchen area, each with an ensuite bathroom with spa. In one bathroom was a washing machine/dryer combination. The kitchen was small, but had essential appliances, such as an oven, microwave oven, dishwasher, and fridge.

- The hotel was quiet. Our apartment was at the front of the hotel (no balcony), and the windows doubled-glazed. There was no notable noise from the major road opposite the apartments.

Other thoughts:
- If you don’t have a car, transport can be a problem. While there is a train line directly in front of the apartments, the nearest train station is some 2 kilometers away. We walked to the Mends Street Jetty to catch the ferry from South Perth to the Perth CBD. The ferry ride was less than 10 minutes and appears to run frequently. The walk from the apartments to the Mends Street Jetty took about 40 minutes. On the way, you pass the Perth Zoo, so walking time from the apartments to the zoo would have been 30 minutes or so.

- Nearby, about 10 minutes walk away, are some shops on Preston Street, including a very good IGA Supermarket with plenty of fresh, prepared food items, a bottle shop, a pub with bistro meals, and other shops.

We booked this hotel for a 6 day holiday in Perth. The location looked good ( and was) as it gave easy access to highways. As we were going to undertake several day tours while in Perth this location was good for us.

The hotel was easy to find and presentation was good. Our first surprise came when we were advised that it was $15 a day to park in the carpark. With a hire care there was little choice!

The apartment was sizeable and well equipped and we were happy with it. However note that there are no opening windows and no fan in the bathroom.

On asking for the code for WiFi was advised that it would be $49.50 for 5 days. I was taken aback at this price as this was more than we pay in a month at home and there were no wi fi hot spots in the lobby or restaurant. This hotel promotes that is is a 4 star international hotel. This being the case we expected to have either free or low cost access as we have experienced in hotels around the world. At a minimum there should have been a free area at least in the lobby.

There is a restaurant and pool on site.
