We arrived on a Friday night.
As soon as I entered our one bedroom, self contained apartment I could hear a man coughing in the room next door. My first thought was that I must have been mistaken because I didn't think sound could possibly travel that easily through the walls.
Later, after going to bed at midnight, I was to experience just how easily sound (every sound) could travel from the apartment next to ours. For four and a half hours I lay, listening to them talking non-stop, opening and closing the sliding door onto the balcony, dragging furniture on the balcony, smoking, coughing and belching whilst on the balcony and then finally at around 4.45am they decided to go to bed and I will leave it up to you to work out what I was then listening to.
By then I was distraught and phoned reception to inform them of the problem and that I had not slept all night. I then went back to bed and slept intermitently for about two hours.
I phoned reception at around 10am and requested that we be moved. I knew there was no way I could spend another night like that.
To their credit they were wonderfully accommodating and moved us to a two bedroom, beach front apartment. We had views of the beach and the apartment was lovely, if a tad tired. However they are very well priced for such a stunning location.
So by the time we moved it was after 12.30pm and we had planned to have walked on the beach then driven to Margaret River. We had also wanted to use the gym and heated pool, but were so shattered from the night before all we did was a quick trip to MR for lunch then back to the room.
We had a luxurious spa in our room and a beautiful sleep that night. This was the weekend break we had come here for. We were so sorry to have to leave the next day and felt very ripped off thanks to the events of the previous night.
I don't blame the resort for this though. Apart from the sound proofing problems, the guests in the room next to ours were disgusting. When we moved rooms we encountered a family who thought it was OK for their children to run around, yelling and playing outside our rooms and bashing on the door and yelling when they wanted to be let back in. What is wrong with people? They seem to have no idea about what is acceptable behaviour.
If we return to Abbey Beach we will only book a beach front apartment, however I just think it is too risky to stay in such a big resort, where you run the risk of being subjected to the hideous behaviour of people who have no manners or consideration for their neighbours.
Looking at other reviews, our experience seems to be a 'one-off'.
What I will say is that the staff were absolutely wonderful, helpful and caring and we are very thankful to them.
It is a terrible shame that there is nothing to stop or govern the bad behaviour of their guests.
