“An Old Fashioned Hotel in the quaint southern town of Albany”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2014

I have travelled extensively and recently discovered a market of hotels I have not previously stayed in within Australia. They are generally old fashioned Australian pubs with single and double rooms above and shared bathrooms for gents and ladies. I was delighted to discover this market, traditionally frequented by travelling country people. The rooms are often clean, private and simple and the bathrooms are old fashioned and often include an old fashioned bath in the ladies bathroom. Nightly they are the cheapest hotel stay possible within Australia but over a week or more, they are incredibly reasonable. I was surprised to find out many older Australians were aware of this cost effective way to travel while still enjoying the comforts of a basic hotel and 'Pub'. A much better idea than a back backers for me.

The Royal George, Albany, is a large step above the 'Traditional Australian Pub' but maintains the same charm of basic old fashioned Australian hotels. I stayed on the top floor and my room was freshly painted with a comfortable double bed, night stand, fridge, wardrobe and cosy heater that worked to a precise, comfortable temperature. My shock was at the beautiful view of the harbour from the large windows in my room. The view from most top floor rooms is breathtaking.

The rooms are clean and the staff are quick and efficient with all requests including fresh sheets and towels. Another big bonus for me is the bathroom. I've stayed in five star hotels all over Australia and often shell out extra for a bath or a 'Spa Room' after a big day of travel, sightseeing and walking. The top floor of the Royal George has a ladies bathroom complete with a very large, old fashioned bath. Due to the winter chill in Albany, the bath and my very efficient room heater is a big selling point.

I recommend the Royal George in Albany for short and long term stay.

We stayed in one of the three person rooms at this hotel on a weekend trip between xmas and new-years. The service was severely lacking because there was a single person left to run the hotel, the bar, and the tea/coffee room.

The shared bathrooms were in very poor condition with locks on showers and toilets not working. The toilet paper was not restocked, mini soaps littered the floor, and disposable razors were on the floor in the shower. The shared kitchen facility was in terrible condition and we were not allowed to use it as the owners were too lazy to clean it. The mattresses in our room had to be at least 10yrs old, and they were totally knackered, making for a difficult nights sleep.

The bar has a very poor selection of beer and is filled with morons. The pub next door is far better on all accounts.

Dear AussieTraveller70,

With reference to your feedback at our hotel, we are very pleased to advise that since you stayed with us we have been very busy refurbishing the hotel. Particularly the bathrooms with re-tiling and new fittings. We also are pleased to advise that we have taken on your feedback and have had a change of staff both cleaning and bar. Thus assuring you and our future guests a much higher quality of stay.

We have improved our selection of tap beers being Swan, Super Dry 3.5, Carlton Dry and James Squire assortments.

We don't normally have an influx of "morons" at our property, however we apologise for the number of said "morons" that you encountered in the bar. We believe that as a result of our recent refurbishment and staff restructuring we are now achieving a happy medium of socially and intellectually acceptable people.

We do thank you for your comments and we do welcome customer feedback. It is with your help that we will continue to improve the quality of our hotels service and standards.
