We recently stayed at Hanover Bay during the July school holidays, we are a family of two adults and three children. The primary reason for our trip was so my husband could do some hiking in the near by Porongorups and Stirling Ranges, and as such, I wanted some accommodation that was close to town, so I could do things with the kids if we didnt want to go hiking too. The lovely ladies at the Albany Tourist Centre recommended Hanover Bay, and it was just perfect for our needs.
The decor is glamorous and quirky - we felt completely at home! It is the special personal touches to the decor such as the ethnic puppets and Moroccan silver trays on the walls, that made the difference. The bed linen, bathroom and kitchen were of a high quality. Our three children slept in one bedroom, and it was plenty big enough for them all, and the master suite was lovely.
I was a little concerned at the proximity to the railway line, but although it did wake me on the first night (but not after that) it was more that it was just a different noise to what I was used to as opposed to being loud (more kind of rumbley, and it was only the first night that it woke me, and I am a terrible sleeper!) The bedrooms are downstairs and the kitchen/lounge/dining is upstairs, which gives you a lovely view over the town and port of Albany. We were in the back apartment, I think the ones closer to the front have views over Hanover Bay.
It was perfect walking distance to the Farmers Market, the icecream shop, the great coffee shop called Liberte, and right next door to the Museum, which my kids LOVED, because it had a variety of activities in the holidays.
We would definately stay here again when we next come back to Albany. Overall, I must say I was surprised at how cosmopolitan Albany has become (haven't been there since I was a kid, 25+ years ago!!) It had great cafe's, great boutiques (shopped up a storm in Ricarda) and arguably the most beautiful scenery in the whole of Western Australia.
The only thing I would have liked to have had seen, was WiFi, they did have free internet access via a cable, but I only brought the ipad so that was no good for me! Other than that one thing, it was perfect!
