Owner description: Discovery Bay near Albany is a truly unique attraction. It is home to Australia's last operating Whaling Station, a stunning Botanic Garden of Australian plants and a display offering visitors a close up experience with friendly Australian Wildlife. You can choose to explore either our whaling history, or the gardens and wildlife, or the entire site to make a real day of it! Pack a picnic or BBQ lunch and spend a day discovering lots you didn't know about the Great Southern region. Situated at the tip of the Flinders Peninsula, the heritage-listed "Whale World" site has undergone dramatic change since 2004. Now maximising its location, Discovery Bay is a showcase of amazing regional bio-diversity, yet still remains true to the original whaling display. Historic Whaling Station guided tours are included with admission, while informative displays are provided to enjoy the gardens and wildlife at your own pace.

Another great place to visit while in Albany. Very interesting. The mini zoo was fun. You get to cuddle a friendly koala.

“Always a Interesting visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2014

I visited Whale World for 4 time in my life over the school holidays, I never get bored of it and find it more interesting each time. After a 45 minute guided tour the guide was excellent we were free to go back to areas and also listen to a short 3D movie on Sharks. My daughter loved the Cheynes Boat and the café had friendly staff and a great view. The skeletons of sperm and blue whales were amazing.

“Albany Whale World”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2014

I am glad we finally visited - after some hesitation - as this is a very good museum. It provides information about a remarkable - and saddening - part of our socio-economic history in a whole range of helpful and interesting ways. Friendly staff and volunteers, and a good cafe/restaurant make it easy and pleasant to spend the recommended three hours here. I still find it remarkable that whaling went on so recently but it is good to know that the boats which follow the whales today are firing-off nothing more dangerous than photo-shots. Hopefully, too, tourism has helped to mitigate the initial economic loss the area suffered when whaling ceased.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

Set in the old whaling station this is an interesting place. The AV is a little bit dated but sitting in the old oil vats to view the films is somehow entrancing. The associated cafe was clean and offered a good selection of foods at reasonable value.

“Chilling”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2014 via mobile

Fascinating to get insight on whaling as it used to be. Chilling because you get the sense that across the world, today's whaling has not changed a lot.
