After reading rave reviews online and in The Age, I decided to take my parents - who were visiting from East Gippsland - to Scorched last Wednesday night.
What can I say? Not much really, except that the experience from start to finish was spectacular!
The restaurant is quite small but the atmosphere is cozy - think orange decor, wood furnishings, jazz playing in the background.
Upon entry, we were greeted warmly by a male waiter who would continue to serve us during the night. He was very amicable and was more than happy to answer our many questions - his knowledge of the menu was excellent.
The menu is designed to be shared - mezze style dining at its best. Our waiter advised that for 3 people, 6-7 plates is ideal.
As such, we ordered the salt cod fritters, beetroot salad, roasted cauliflower, little duck pies, slow cooked lamb, bastourma with tomato medley - we also enjoyed some complimentary zeally bay sourdough with olive oil and housemade dukkah.
Each plate was perfection; the balance of flavours was superb and the chefs clearly thought about our order as a whole as plates arrived in pairs that were perfectly matched.
The little duck pies for example, were served in conjunction with the beetroot salad. The duck pies, which were filo based and spiced with cinnamon were beautifully paired with the beetroot salad which added 'zing' to the palate.
Overall, I could not have been happier with my family's experience at Scorched and cannot wait to return.
*I feel it is important to note what great value Scorched is in comparison to other tapas or mezze style restaurants I have dined at recently. Most share plates come in at $16, the most expensive, the lamb and chicken, are priced at around the $30 mark. The serves are very generous, 6-7 plates were plenty for 3, we couldn't fit in dessert so perhaps I might order 1 less next time.
Scorched have hit the nail on the head when it comes to both quality and quantity.
