“Another regional gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2013

We ate here on the recommendation of our B & B. the idea of eating in a motel restaurant seemed a little strange, but it was great.
The space is small, and the tables are quite close. However, the noise level on a crowded night is not too bad. Don't expect to conduct a discreet private conversation, though.
The staff were very welcoming and helpful, even though they were flat out busy all night.
The food was of a very high quality, with good ingredients cooked to perfection. The fresh seafood (blue eye) was perfect: off the boat that day, served with a simple sauce and vegetables, and done so that it was moist throughout without being raw.
The other dishes we had were of equal quality.
The bill was not too bad for the quality of the food and wine, and (by capital city standards at least) very fair value. Regardless, you get what you pay for, and we would not hesitate to return.
The wine list is good and not excessively priced, with an interesting range of regional drops.
Don't miss it if you're in Port Fairy!

“Overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

After reading the Age good food guide we looked forward to our meal at this highly rated restaurant. It took me back to the 80s days of cuisine nouvelle. My prawn entree was neatly arranged on the plate and looked decorative but the bottom line was that the quantity of prawn was minute given the cost. The taste was good but not all components of the meal matched. My partner had quail which contained a number of different components which en masse did not gel together. Her main of fish of the day was delicious but very small. My duck main was tasty but again insufficient in quantity to match the high prices charged. Competitors offer better value for money.

“Fine dining with country charm and hospitality”

Great selection on the menu, food was exquisite, wine list was a bit limited but had some good wines and the service was great. Highly recommended. We will be back for more!

“Would come back again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

The Stag has quite a lot of atmosphere which always makes for a good start. Both my husband and I thorougly enjoyed our meals but did not come under the heading of meals that we would remember for some time to come. The staff were attentive and prices reasonable. Being within walking distance of our accommodation was a good bonus as there is no need to worry about driving.

“A little gem in port fairy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2013 via mobile

The stag does not disappoint. Very solid food (with the exception of over salted mash), exceptional service, and a nice setting.
