“Great position but average service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

The position of Mantra is excellent but we found the service very ordinary. Reception was very off handed and when room had not been serviced by 3.30 pm the next afternoon we had to ask for this to be done. This was then a fleeting tidy up with only one towel replaced which required a further follow up.

Happy hour was another disappointment where the waitress initially gave a wine at reduced price but when purchasing a second said that wine was not included in happy hour. When we mentioned that we had previously purchased at happy hour price she said that that was because she was feeling like being nice and she was not feeling nice any more??? Overall quite rude.

This was a really relaxing weekend and the Mantra was a great place to spend it. If you are looking for somewhere to unwind, have a walk along the beach, play a game of lawn bowls or tennis then this place is for you.
We didn’t eat in the restaurant for dinner however breakfast was fantastic. If I had one criticism it would be that the staff were quite slow in topping up items which had run out.
The service when we arrived was really good and this set the tone for the whole weekend. The reception staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, which helps when you first arrive.
I’m not sure how the hotel goes when ‘schoolies’ week is on, however outside of this time we will definitely go back

Room Tip: ask for a beach front or tennis court view

If you're looking for a comfortable place to realx and unwind, this is the place....relaxed casual atmosphere, great facilities. We loved our heritage room, a lovely blend of the old and the new. Food quality is averge but there are plenty of other great options only 5 minutes walk away in Lorne. Hire a movie at the local video store and pack your bathers for a spontaneous dip in the indoor pool.

The main caution here is what sort of room you book and its location. Promotional photos and literature only show rooms with views of gardens, tennis courts or the beach. If you are in one of the Heritage rooms, be aware that these have direct frontage onto a busy thoroughfare to and from the rear of reception and the bar and restaurant as well as the block where we were staying, so privacy will not be on the menu in one of these rooms. We were on a one-bedroom apartment, and while the decor and presentation within were acceptable, the location was not. Similar to a goldfish-bowl, we were at the end of a cul-de-sac; cheek to jowl with buildings to the left and right. We had a lovely view of the building in font of us, the temporary fencing around the Erskine Building and were treated to all the comings and goings of service vehicles and personnel and the accompanying din and clatter, as the ground floor of our building (and the one directly in front of it) largely housed maintenance and cleaners' storage rooms. Fortunately we were on the topmost floor, and although the proximity to other guests' balconies was awkward, we were not in a position where we felt our every move was being scrutinised, but for those on the lower levels, it must be akin to living under a microscope. As for the 'partial ocean view,' well, if you stand on the edge of the balcony and contort yourself sufficiently, yes; there it is (partially, of course). Breakfast was good, with all the usual selections available, and the restaurant offers decent fare for dinner. Although it was not school holiday time, the place was overrun with families and rowdy children and all their associated clatter and (fruitless) parental admonishments. This, combined with being uncomfortably close to other guests' quarters (We felt like we were in a game of human Tetris) all made for a loud and most definitely 'un-private' stay.

Room Tip: Check where your room is first before you sign for it.

We booked to stay in a heritage room for one night. On arrival we were told we'd been allocated a resort room which had a spa and balcony but were given the choice of staying in the heritage room if that was more to our liking, which it was. We had glimpses of the ocean through our window. What a shame they aren't able to use the fireplaces. That would really make the heritage rooms a preferred option.
There are plenty of shops and restaurants across the road, but we decided to have a barbecue in the nearby park. There are barbecues near the foreshore, very close to the hotel. The next morning we had a fantastic buffet breakfast. Truly five star; bagels, smoked salmon, pancakes, fresh cream, fruit smoothies, as well as normal buffet fare. The service was great. We were never left with used plates on our table, as they were always taken away promptly and unobtrusively.
We got a great mid-week, off season deal. If they repeat the deal, we will definitely return. The hotel is in a great location for touring the Great Ocean Road and all it has to offer.

Room Tip: Lots to choose from. Really depends on personal tastes.

Recently my wife and myself stayed at one of the lovely apartments in the Anga-Hook block of apartments on the third floor and we had an absolute ball. Owning and running accommodation ourselves at Loft In The Mill at Olinda we couldn't help but be impressed by your lady at reception Anna who was so friendly, helpful and welcoming that the day after checking in we got another friend who also runs accommodation in the Olinda area to drive and also stay overnight on the Friday night. He was in as much raptures as we were and three weeks later we are just organising another set of dates to agin visit this magical resort. Right on the beach with magical views across to the Pier, and at the end of main street so that any number of restaurants are only a short walk away. I haven't played tennis or croquet for years but the magnificent lawns drew me to both and just added to our overall experience. We will be on the phone to Anna shortly to return and thank you Mantra at Lorne for providing a great getaway for us.

Room Tip: Anga-Hook apartments are definately the pick, literally on the beach.
