“good setting, quiet spot, but could use some revamp”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2010

We spent 2 days in this place (in the boathouse), very casual atmosphere, Bicheno is a nice small town. The boathouse itself has a nice view on the ocean, but could need a revamp in some rooms. We had bbq on the deck (with visit of possums), very quiet place, the problem we encountered during our stay couldn't be found/handled immediately (strange smell in kitchen), we got a compensation afterwards, but would have rather seen the problem solved during our stay.
Recommend it for families with kids.

With a little bit of tender loving care this place would be fantastic. The setting is right on the waterfront and there is lots of wildlife around. Our accommodation was clean and comfortable but it was showing signs of wear and could do with a good paint and a revamp eg the shower door had a crack in it. There was a barbeque on the verandah but we could halfway through cooking our dinner and the gas ran out. Despite that, we still enjoyed our stay.

My partner and I stayed here whilst on our honeymoon. we wanted to do Hobart to Launcheston, including a few days on the Freycinet Peninsula on the way. Bicheno Hideaway is good value for money and unique. The local wildlife is a big plus point and we shared our stay with wallabies, peacocks, possums, chucks, exotic birds etc.... 'Chalets' are v comfortable with all mod cons. Would recommend only 20 mins to wineglass

The location is really what makes this accommodation - the stunning beach on the doorstep and the variety of wildlife (and pets!) sharing the space. If you are looking for a quiet retreat and something a bit different, this is the place.

Stayed at the boathouse with a family of 7 members and was amazed with the ambience in the boathouse and its environment. The boathouse was well equipped. clean and not to mention an unexpected surprise of such a wonderful seaside hideaway, a contrast from the city life. We are from Singapore and really really did not expect such a marvellous environment for a break. The boathouse will be perfect for a big family (from 6 to 8 members) and one can even have a nice barberque at the balcony and enjoy the sea breeze and lushy sound of the nearby sea waves. The hideaway is just 1 km away from the nearby town where you can book day tours and buy your green and meat.

To conclude, I would say that my family will be most keen to go back to the Bicheno hideaway for another stay. Thanks Mike .. the owner of the hideaway for the wonderful surprise.

We stayed in lodge 3 which is a waterfront property right on the edge - away from other people. I got this lodge as I booked a few months in advance, though the other lodges look just as good. #3 has clear views of the ocean from the room and balcony.

I love how the blinds are pulled back and the entire front of the cabin is glass so you can see the ocean and surrounding bush land. And you dont even have to worry about privacy because no one is likely to walk in front of your cabin.

The bedroom has a little port hole type window in the side, and on a clear night you can look out from your bed at the spectacular star show, as there is little light pollution here you can see much more than you would in a city.

The property that these lodges are located on is superb. They have their own avairies full of plants, plus free roaming chickens (and many very cute baby chooks!), ducks and a couple of roosters (who certainly never woke us up early). There are also some roaming wallabies, some of which I believe were released there from rehabilition from the previous owner of the Hideaway. Judging from the poo pellets on the ground as you walk around in front of your cabin, there are many night creatures roaming while you sleep as well.

There is also a resident peacock who constantly displays his brilliant feathers to the peahens and guests. He even came right up on our balcony one morning and climbed up on our table to get a better view of his domain!

The rooms themselves are outstanding. Very unique design with the rounded roof, wooden panels and large front windows. It is large and clean and has a self contained kitchen.

I love the secluded location, romantic feel and natural bush outlook. It doesn't get much better than the Bicheno Hideaway. The owners are also ultra friendly and take great pride in this property.

If you want private, romantic, peaceful, natural, clean and secluded accomodation then choose Bicheno Hideaway.

Loved the boat-shaped chalets, no 3 for us, which looks out towards the sea which is just metres away. All the facilities you need to be comfy, even on a chilly Autumn day as it was for us.

We didn't notice any noisy chickens, though we were surrounded by peacocks in the morning, and we had to be very careful to avoid the wallabies with the car.

The hosts were friendly and offered us plenty of advice, just wish we could have stayed longer.

Can't recommend the main Bicheno Pub though, food was pretty ordinary, and not really that good value considering.
