4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2008

Zanzibar is located in the heart of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. We stayed on the sixth floor, and the views from Noosa to Point Cartwright were just astounding. Although the weather was perfect, even if it had been raining, the balcony was well situated and you could easily sit out on it during a storm and watch the lightning show.

The apartment was two bedroom, two bathroom and was beautifully appointed. The kitchen was extremely modern, with european appliances. Marble tiles throughout and modern, well ventilated!! (no steamy mirrors) bathrooms. The ensuite bathroom had a spa.

Everything was clean and new looking. The carpet was fresh and unmarked - no worn tracks leading from doorways or room to room, which is my pet hate.

When you leave your apartment and go down the lift, it opens out directly onto retail areas and restaurants. You literally can park your car for the whole time you are away - you will not need it.

The patrolled beach is only a very short walk away.

Will definitely be back to enjoy Zanzibar in the future.

I wish we'd checked Trip Advisor before booking here. Be warned - all the bad reports listed here are true and accurate. We were completely ripped off too.

We were shocked that the Zanzibar could have a 4 star rating. It should be a 1 star. It was in a very sorry state. Not worth a cent of the money we prepaid.

The carpets, furniture and bedding were all stained. There was alot of dirt & dust everywhere and a damp mildew smell in the 2nd bedroom.

The 2nd bedroom was dark and dingy with no outside window. The kids were too scared to sleep in it.

Kitchen was dirty. Dishes stained and chipped. Dishwasher broken.

The pool area was very unappealing. Old, broken and missing tiles, dirty looking. The kids swam at the beach instead.

KiwiTravelerSanDiego must be either an apartment owner or management and is lying through their teeth. They seem to be the only ones pretending the place is in good shape. IT'S NOT!!!!

DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! AVOID THIS PROPERTY!!!!

  • Liked — Close to the beach and cafes
  • Disliked — The dirty apartment and the terrible pool.

After reading the reviews after I booked the Zanzibar we were very leary about staying at the Zanzibar. We were really greatly surprised at the wonderful apartment, wonderful desk help and the great location. My husband and I couldn't have been more pleased and we travel quite extensively around the world and have stayed in many hotels and apartments.

We give this hotel a #1!

  • Liked — Clean, great beach views, reception personnel super....absolutely everything!
  • Disliked — Nothing.

Zanzibar

Accommodation is no where near 4 star. From stained bed linen, stained carpets, cracked crockery, little or no suitable cooking utensils this accommodation is old tired and in worse shape than the average cheap motel. Outside furniture on balcony (see pictures) gives a good insight into the quality of this accommodation. Outside barbecue area don’t seem to be serviced, so barbeques are disgusting, and although they have 2 one does not work at all.

We complained to management and were told that as all units are privately owned, there is little or nothing they can do unless the owner agrees to fix these. Frankly this should not be my problem, and should be the management company "Mantra". Maybe Mantra only manage old and tired properties. Being a big management company its seems all about their share of the take in rental with the least amount of money being spent on basic maintenance. I dont beleive that Mantra can do nothing with the ownerrs, they can simply state that if the apartment is not up to scratch, then remove it from the rental pool. Overall this is 1 to 2 star accommodation at a pretty expensive price. I think Zanzibar is trading on its old reputation.

One can do a lot better if you choose newer accommodation in the area.

We stayed at Cilento previously and although the apartment had no views of the ocean the apartment was clean very well stocked with unchipped or unbroken crockery and the management helpful and courteous. The only thing that Zanzibar has going for it is the view of the ocean due to its location, as for the rest it does not make up for a very poorly maintained and run down apartment.

Stay at Zanzibar at your own risk, and look forward to possible disappointment. You might be lucky and find a unit that is well maintained by its owners, but this cannnot be guaranteed. We had friends staying in another apartment, with torn and worn carpets, musty damp smell, and requested a change of apartment a few days later, so I don’t believe our issues are isolated.

Good luck Zanzibar, we love Mooloolaba but won’t be back staying in your apartments.

Went to Mooloolaba with my wife and 3 young boys. A great town, great beach and very friendly locals.

In short I would say this property is well past its prime.
The location is quite good and the staff are very friendly and acommodating. These are the only positives.

The rooms are very tired with very old furniture. Carpets and lounges are quite dirty. Hallways to rooms were also filthy.

Disappointed that there was no BBQ on deck. They do have two BBQ's near pool.

Room decor is quite dated.

Pool area is quite uninviting.

Wont stay here again.

If you do come to Mooloolaba make sure you do the day trip to Fraser Island!
