“A hidden gem - well known to everyone but me!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

What a lovely hotel, despite its history it has transformed itself into an amazing place. My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights to celebrate a wedding anniversary and it was not long enough. We were upgraded on arrival (I asked if this was possible) and were given a lovely large room on the 4th floor. We had a bottle of bubbly waiting for us which was a lovely gesture and set the scene for our stay.

The room was very comfortable and quiet, the room large and not at all small and hotel like. The only thing that I could suggest would be the addition of a second arm chair in the room. There was only one chair which meant one of us had to sit on the bed to read, given the size of the room a second chair would easily fit.

The gardens and hotel facilities are excellent. Staff were fantastic, all helpful and interested in assisting us where possible. Children are very well catered for and entertained ...... there is even a movie theatre for kids movies! I would have loved to watch a movie but it was mainly targeted at children.

I recommend this little (201 rooms so not that small) gem to others and wondered why we had not been to stay before. We will be going back and booking a suite next time.

Room Tip: Get a suite if you can afford it but hotel rooms are large and comfortable.

Had a 2 night stay Sun-Tues - hotel room was lovely, newly renovated. Enjoyed lazing in the spa. Disappointed that Eucalypt was closed for dining on Sun & Mon, their menu had us salivating. breakfast had a good selection, only negative the coffee... girls night in Mon night, had room service and the Bad Boy chips are recommended!
Would definitely return, and would bring the family as there is loads for kids, 2 pools indoors and out, a great games room for teens, including free table tennis and snooker. My boys would be entertained for hours.
Great base to drive to nearby sites, 3 Sisters and Leura. Recommend Leura Garage cafe for great coffee and lunch, their pizzas are delicious. Had dinner at Zest in Leura, also a great experience, Claire the hostess, made us very welcome. The food was delicious and the Pannacotta dessert, to die for....

Great expectations but disappointed. Location is very good, centrally located for all attractions. However, service was very poor, particularly the restaurant & bar areas....... cold food/drinks, long time waiting, not good.

The problem with this hotel is that it sets expectations too high. It is supposed to be a resort, but it falls short of that, more like a motel.

Good
Bar/restaurant - great view, excellent service, good food and good-ish selection of drinks. Lively on a lively night, but very quiet otherwise.

Middling
The smart restaurant (can't remember name) - great food, service good, but the room looks like it was once used to store equipment of some description, completely lacking in character.

Front desk - OK, but not exactly going out of their way.

Bad
Gym - could not use a few hours on the evening of check-in as there was a group booked in - not staying at the hotel. When you book a hotel that advertises facilities you expect the facilities to be available.

Hallways - very scruffy. No big deal but a bad impression.

Room - OK, good motel standard.

Shuttle bus service - stops at 4pm. Great if you want to go out before 4pm. Obviously pretty bad if you want to go to Leura (a long walk up and down a hill or two) after 4pm. Why not have the shuttle run until late?

Noise - there was a boot camp on in the grounds when we stayed. It started at 6am and woke most of the hotel up. This sort of behaviour by a hotel is bad - take your guests money and then take someone else's money to use your grounds and who cares if one annoys the other!

Parking - why is the 'main' car park at the front of the hotel so small? Wouldn't be an issue if someone could come and help bring luggage in from the 'overflow' car park, but they don't so the small car park is an issue.

Overall
If you expect a good motel standard you'll be happy. If you expect more and pay for more (which you do) it doesn't match up.

Dear Reviewer, thank you the commentary which is appreciated. It was pleasing to read you enjoyed our restaurant(s) service and cuisine and Eucalypt restaurant is planned for a decor enhancement later this year. The resort offers extensive leisure facilities from tennis courts, squash, indoor & outdoor pools, kids areas, billiards room and apologises that the gym was being used on the occasion you tried to use it. Hopefully you may consider staying with us again when next you are in the region as we are confident you would not be again disappointed.
Regards,

It was pleasant and relaxing. The breakfast was typical run of the mill, nothing special. I would call it average. However, it was a nice place for a relaxing stay. The staff were helpful. The view was great and the room was above average.

The hotel is situated in the lovely township of Leura, just a short drive away from the famous Echo Point at Katoomba. The Fairmont is an upmarket style resort with a lovely lobby and reception area. Our room was generous in size and the bathroom was also quite large. We stayed for three nights and found the bed had only one sheet with a covered doona which was very uncomfortable in the heat of Summer. The hotel is quite expensive and you would expect basic facilities that are available at similarly priced resorts in Australia. There is an extra charge for Wifi and even the in room safe needs a credit card to use it.
The outside facilities include tennis courts, lakes with carp, an indoor pool, outdoor pools and spas. The indoor pool was large and clean but needs repainting. The outdoor pools included a large swimming pool and smaller childrens' pool.
The buffet breakfast was excellent. There was a huge range of fresh fruits, dairy foods, hot foods, breads and cereals (including gluten free foods if you ask) and beverages.
Overall, the Fairmont is a great hotel with good facilities and service, but unfortunately the maintenance issues need to be addressed by management. The lobby is magnificent with tall expanses of glass, yet there are spiderwebs ( and spiders too! ) on numerous hotel windows. I hope management take note of this comment and rectify the cleaning issue immediately. The inside of the hotel was clean, but it can be very uncomfortable for people to have to walk past spiders on windows.
I would recommend the second floor rooms as have easy access to the entertainment areas and pool areas.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms, close to pool without needing to use the lift.

The hotel has an excellent position base for exploring the mountains. The resort has lovely grounds to explore and it is serene and quiet. We stayed in an executive room with 2 young children and it was ample room for all of us as the normal guest rooms would've been too small. I would consider a family room or the ones on the top floor next time just to have the balcony or the separate sleeping room for the kids if you spend a longer time awya. It was ok for a short stay though. The bathroom was a small triangular room, awkward to move around in compared to such a large room. One area to improve with the bathroom is the lack of any no towel rails so with 4 of us, where are we meant to hang bath towels and hand towels please??

Another negative is the sofa bed - it has to be one of the worst to sleep on. Luckily a child does not weigh alot but you could feel every spring coming through and the mattress is ever so flimsy when I spent a bit on it - ouch! I will send the physio bills pronto! There are also the metal fold out bars with a large gap to the side of the lounge arm part which makes it dangerous for kids as they can get their hands caught or even rolled into that gap during night. This needs to be looked at. Considering the rooms have been renovated, they could invest in better sofa beds! On the other hand, the normal king size bed was absolutely fantastic and the sheets and quilts are divine to sleep in, so well done there to management choice.

The AC is set warm so if its too hot in your room, we made the mistake to not ring reception where they can apparently re-set it for you to work normally!

The weekend we were there it happened to be 30 degrees at the end of November and unfortunately the outdoor pool was closed for maintenance (but from reading thr reviews this seems to happen more often than normal!), so we could not use it and had to use the smelly older indoor pool which needs to be overhauled and renovated as the facilities are looking tired and dated. It hadn't changed at all since I'd been there well over 7 years ago. The tiles need to be looked at on the edge of the pool as they are sharp for the littlies and perhaps some better seating arrangements?

Jamison's restaurant and the bar next to it are lovely for meals. The buffet is great and so is the bar menu if you stay in house. One thing to be aware of is the breakfast times - they are till 10.30am on weekends, but only 10am on weekdays. We nearly missed out as we stayed Sat, Sun and Mon, but the restaurant management were obliging to leave things out a little longer so we can get the kids sorted before ourselves. Thank you to them, this does need to be standardised for your guests though as its confusing.

They have some great children facilities, a soft play area with toys for the littlies and a games room for the older kids. These facilities are one of the best I've seen and kept mine busy for ages.

Overall, we had a great time, the refurb looks great (except for some of the above issues), and will definitely be back to stay.

Room Tip: level 4 with balcony and valley views if you can get one guaranteed
