“Old world charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2011

According to the literature included in the room, the venue was constructed in the 1930's as a Guest House. The subsequent uses and up grades of the property have respected the original features (other than the tennis court - now a swimming pool). As patrons, we were looking for a quiet facility where we felt we could relax whilst also taking in the highlights that the Blue Mountains have to offer. We were not disappointed. Having stayed at a number of "older" historic venues throughout Australia, we believe that this facility compares equally with them. The reading rooms contain very comfortable furniture which encourages users to take their time in reading either the daily press or to use some of the books provided for patrons use.The view from our room did not overlook the Mountains but was bathed in sunshine in the morning. The room was spacious and included a couch and free standing table. Basic tea & coffee facilities were provided and the Bathroom space was satisfactory although the tiling was showing signs of wear. Additional material on the features of the Blue Mountains area could have been included in the room. The views of the Mountains available from the Dining Room are very good and no doubt have influenced the cost of the meals (particularly when compared to those available in the town and surrounds). The staff were helpful and the gymnasium functional although the procedure to deal with the alarm could be improved. We were disappointed to find that the rooms did not include HD Televisions and were restricted to viewing the 4 main TV stations. During our stay it appeared that the number of guests were not substantial. Our stay was mid week and this may have been the reason. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and came away feeling rested and refreshed.

This property is the historic old "Californian" guest house near Katoomba. Since its days as a temperance lodge it underwent a renovation in the 1980s - the point it is currently stuck. Heritage here means fake leadlight and plastic "dried flowers".
We paid top dollar for a night's accommodation (could have had the Four Seasons', Sydney for the same price). Am glad, however, that the property boasts a "Tower Room" (locked), it made it seem even more like Fawlty Towers!
What was wrong?
1. Unrenovated since Brisbane had the Expo in '88
2. The gym is in a shed
3. The "mini bar" had two things in it...a can of coke and a can of pepsi
4. My sheet had holes in it.
5. The hotel is covered in fairy lights - most of which don't work
6. We couldn't park because of a wedding
7. When we did find a park got a call from reception with a snide "Well...who's parked in some one else's spot then".
The people who work there are generally nice - and in general the mountains suffer from a complete lack of good hotels. So, live and learn.

Firstly allow me to thank you for your feedback as this always helps to assist us to improve and give our guests positive experiences. Please allow me to address some of your comments and concerns.
The Mountain Heritage Hotel & Spa Retreat was fully renovated in 1998 not 1988. This date is clearly displayed in the Hotel History section of our information compendium in all guest's rooms.
The design reflects the heritage and history of the area and honours the era in which the original "Californian" was built, hence the name, Mountain Heritage.
The Hotel guests rooms also underwent a soft refurbishment in late 2009.
The prices are consistent with others in the area and therefore cannot be compared with Sydney prices or any other capital city or region.
The fake lead-light referred to is actually original and real lead-light, it is not what you will find in a suburban project home.
The Tower Room was set up for a meeting and contained expensive equipment, hence it was locked. When not in use it is always left open for guests to peruse the historical photographic records which hang on the walls of the Tower Room.
The Gym is indeed located in a separate building, within the grounds of the hotel, as is the award winning Health Spa, Spa Sublime.
We receive numerous requests for soft drinks, which is why we place them in the room refrigerator. Full mini bars are also available with a range of alcoholic beverages.
It was unfortunate that parking was at a premium, due to a large wedding on that night, an issue which has clearly irritated you and I apologise for this. Our staff are always on hand to help in these circumstances.
We pride ourselves on our service at The Mountain Heritage and it was pleasing that you found the staff to be generally nice.
Thank you once again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

I was expecting more from this hotel. The rooms were dated and in need of refurbishment. It was close to the twon for restaurants etc, but the town is equally dissappointing. It is a struggle to find a decent restaurant. Would I return - no.

Dear DSB57,

Thank you for your feedback as this assists in helping us to rectify any problems that we sometimes are not aware of.

This property has been around for over 103 years and we have tried to design the public areas and rooms to match the era that they reflect. A soft refurb was completed in 2009 with new bedding, sofas and manchester being replaced.

I am sorry that you found the town of Katoomba disssappointing but there are a number of award winning restaurants close by and many of our guests who choose to dine in our Jamiesons Views restaurant are very happy with the foood, choice of wine and service. Our friendly reception staff are more than happy to recommend a range of restaurants with different cuisines and styles in the area.

Thank you once again for your comments and hopefully in the future you will return to the beautiful Blue Mountains and stay with us at The Mountain Heritage Hotel and Spa Retreat.

We stated here for two nights and drove up from the city, the hotel was fairly easy to find. We booked this hotel because it was a good price the bar area had a stunning view of the mountains.

Unfortunatley the day we arrived and the day after it poured with rain contineousley so we didn't get to see that view until the morning we left! The hotel staff were nice a friendly and the room was large, but everything was very old fashioned and dated from the decor in the room the the bar area. I did add a certain charm but was perhaps leaning a bit more towards the old side than the charming.

The food and drink was reasonabley priced and very nice, the tree's outside the bar had parrots in them which were sweet. Checking in and out was fine with no problems, there was a pool at the hotel but we didn't use this as it was to wet and cold, and there was also a spa which again we didn't use.

The hotel is at the top of the town of Katoomba, which is actually a lot smaller than I expected. The town was quite strange aswell with a lot of old shops and a lot of cafes, there was one bar that we saw that we were going to go in but the locals drinking there looked a bit odd so we avoided. We felt that we were stared at everywhere we went, like we had tourist written on our heads but apart from this being a little odd we didn't feel unsafe or anything. We did ask in the bank we went into whether there was any nice places to eat that evening and it would appear that there wasn't really! We were eating in the hotel the next night so wanted to go out the first night, we ended up going to the chinese which was just past the supermarket at the bottom of the town, it was really nice, can't remeber what it was calld but would definatley recommend going there.

The hotel is close to te three sisters which were beautiful, we went our very early on our final morning (the sunny one) at about 7.30am and walked down the track to the bottom of the first sister, it was very quiet and peaeful as all the other tourists hadn't arrived yet, the cloud was still in the mountains below aswell so everything was very peaceful and quiet, would recommend going down there at that time in the morning if your awake (we had jet lag). Also went to the jenolan caves from here, which was still about an hour away, but quite a nice drive, saw some kangeroos on the road. There is also the many waterfalls, and the cable cars that you can go on near here aswell.

Overall this was a nice hotel if a bit bit old fashioned, we didn't mind as we got a good deal but would not have been happy if we had paid a lot for the hotel as it was probably more 3* than 4*. I think this is probably one of the better hotels in katoomba,( there was Echo's but that was very expensive!) but you only really need one night here and for one or two nights it's fine.

Dear Sarahwest,

Thank you for your feedback concerning your stay with us. The hotel's decor is not contemporary, it is created in a heritage style, similar to an English Country House. All the furniture and fixtures are not old but they reflect the era.

We also have a sister property, The Falls Mountain Retreat, at Wentworth falls, which provides a more modern contemporary feel, which is preferred by some, but it is purely a personal choice.

Once again thank you for your feedback and hopefully we can welcome you back in the future to the magnificent Blue Mountains and The Mountain Heritage Hotel and Spa Retreat.

We stayed here on the basis of reasonable reviews and an interesting description. The Hotel (or more accurately, guest house) is over 100 years old and has a very colourful past. It certainly has lots of old world charm, but unfortunately it is getting tired and urgently needs some modernising. I suspect the quality of the stay depends on the location of the room and time of year. Even in the height of summer our room smelt old and damp and would have been horrible in winter with the windows covered in dark shrubbery. Other parts of the hotel did not have this old damp smell, however, so rooms in other areas might be much more pleasant. The beds were lumpy and the TV small and pre-digital. Bathroom was quaint and quite attractive in a Victorian sort of way – certainly functional.
Staff were very pleasant and helpful, no complaints there. We didn’t try the restaurant as it was pretty expensive, but it did have spectacular views. On a nice day the gardens would probably be very pleasant, but we got lots of rain and mist which didn’t help the whole experience.
Overall, disappointing and not a place I would recommend (unless you were interested in local pre-war history).

Having read the various reviews of others, even back to 2008, I do have to agree that even now during Christmas 2010, this hotel gives us mixed feelings. Yes you can wonder, coming from Sydney and having stayed in the Shangrila, why this place can call itself a 4.5 star hotel. In our point of view it is not, not in terms of what you should expect in terms of comfort. An overpriced room without any view (seems we face the kitchen down stairs- room 24), poor TV receipt, room has a smell, which we can not really figure out where it is coming from.., poor space for luggage (suitcases need to be placed on the floor), everything is overdone with flower patterns (up to the fake flowers in a basket), bad wireless and not even free internet. Overall, POOR and gives you the feeling why do I spend this money!!!
Service is attententive, restaurant (dinner) fine, breakfast is overpriced and poor (no fresh juices, no fresh eggs / omelettes, poor coffee). Why pay 18 or 28 Dollar for this????
For us, a nice and interesting and expensive experience, but clearly a one time experience. Regret to stay in a place and knowing you have already paid, but you do and will not like your stay.

Stunning views... We booked a valley suite with 3 kids. The beds for the kids were non-sleepable unless you're an Indian Guru.. The room was freezing cold when we arrived, the staff recommended us lighting up the open fire place that consisted of soaking wet logs....
Well nobody is perfect so we went for dinner where we were almost the only guests - this is at peak season... in comes two reheated chicken dishes totally without love and care with the left over potatoes from previous breakfast, though the dessert was really good. We paid for full hot breakfast but were charged for children's hot chocolate and again the same potatoes..
After discussing these issues with the staff we changed rooms and got much better beds for the children. We also got refunded for chicken and some extra charges for children and part of the internet and a lot of apologies. Very friendly reactive staff but not professionally proactive. I booked this hotel before the last two reviews at Tripadvisor - but would not have, had I read the last two entries. They are more like a nice Bed and Breakfast than a 4-star hotel
