“Nice, more mature hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

After a hideous experience in Bondi, we were thrilled to arrive at this yha. The resident were more mature and respectful, the lounge was full of people quietly reading or chatting and the kitchen was spotless. Our 4 bed dorm was nice, I even had a single bed in a slightly separate annex to the main room. The showers and toilets were immaculate and plentiful.

The only downside: 100 tiny children staying on a school trip. Cute at 6pm, not so cute when running around late at night and first thing in the morning. Hostel staff and the teachers were powerless, I don't think they should accept children as young as these (approx 7 years old).

Hi Rosycheeks
Thanks for your review of this YHA and glad you enjoyed your visit to the Blue Mountains.
We are sorry that you were disturbed by the group that was staying at the same time as you. YHA does offer accommodation to a wide range of people as fitting our ethos of encouraging travel especially for young people. This hostel has a dedicated groups wing with separate kitchen and lounge that is specifically there so groups can have their own space. But obviously all guests need to respect others in the corridors.
If you ever encounter problems like this again, please do contact the hostel staff - there is an after hours phone at this hostel for instance, and staff live on site. Whilst it is the responsiblity of teachers to manage the behaviour of their charges, our staff will always discuss this with them if other guests are being disturbed.
YHA hopes to welcome you at another of our hostels in Australia.

Stayed here just one night but may come back very soon as thought it was great. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Clean rooms and great bathrooms. Huge relaxed communal spaces so you could socialise if you want or read quietly in the same area. Lovely sunny terrace to sit out on.

This is the perfect place to stop off for a cheap and easy weekend out of the city.

Where to start? Hmmm, well the rooms are basic but very clean and the beds are comfortable. There are heaters in the room for chilly nights and I slept like a baby both nights I was there. No road noise; in fact, no noise of any kind.

Showers have a strong flow of hot water and are so clean they shine.

The hostel kitchen was one of the best I've seen in years of travelling - large fridges, plenty of pots, pans, plates and the like, lots of hobs, plenty of room to move. There's an Aldi close by and a huge Coles five minutes up the road, so self-catering is a breeze (although, for a night out, I'd thoroughly recommend dinner and beers at the Old Bank). Also shiny clean.

There are three living spaces - a no-nonsense eating area with tables and chairs next to the kitchen; a massive open space full of sofas, games and a pool table; and a quiet reading area with comfy armchairs.

There's a note which says you may drink alcohol with meals (the implication is, only with meals) but I saw a few people chilling out with a beer or two or glass of wine in the main common room without being hassled by anyone. The message is clear, though, this is NOT a place to get pissed and get rowdy. If you're looking for that, YHA is probably not the right place for you. Nonetheless, on the night I spent hanging out in the common room, there was a pleasant ambiance.

Staff were very professional and obviously knowedgeable about the area.

The hostel attracts a very wide range of guests, with people from all ages and countries.

In general, I love YHA hostel. This one is a perfect hostel who are visited Blue Mountains and looking for a hostel in Katoomba. Centrally located, big dorm rooms, discount for YHA members, free wi-fi for YHA members, big kitchen, big dining and lounge area, outdoor seating, very clean place overall, and a very friendly staff. The staff is very accommodating and provides valuable information. My three nights stay in this hostel was wonderful. I enjoyed just staying inside the hostel one day, reading a book in the quiet room while it was raining outside. They get really good people from various countries.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

Great little spot to stay when visiting the Blue Mountains. Spacious rooms with big lockers, and good communal areas. The staff were helpful in recommending nearby restaurants and providing directions to the train station. We had a nice, peaceful getaway from the bustling centre of Sydney.

The hostel is strategically located and very well equipped. Staff was helpful and friendly.
As we stayed there during the season, the dining room was pack and we have to resort to eat in the living room instead.
Good value for the price we paid. Will recommend it for those on budget.
