“Beautiful B&B, a wonderful find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2011

My wife and I have just returned from a very pleasant holiday in New South Wales, the highlight being four days in the Blue Mountains, where we stayed at Melba House, in the Dame Nellie room. As we were not travelling with a car, Sue met us at Katoomba station, and welcomed us to our spacious and beautifully furnished room, offering to light the fire, as the evening was cool.
We were introduced to Issy, Sue's beautiful and smiling American Spaniel, so friendly and well behaved.
The room had everything we needed, ready to hand, including a decanter of port, and very comfortable furniture. We could vary the bed coverings as we do not like duvets, and only used the electric blankets (we had never used electric blankets before!) on our last morning. Breakfasts were always excellent and well presented, and there was HOT toast served as we finished our cooked meal, plus we had a large pot of good coffee.
Throughout our stay Sue was always most helpful, and even drove us into town to our selected restaurants in the evening, saving our tired legs after hours of garden visits and sight-seeing.
We thought we were lucky to find such a delightful hostess, and privileged to stay in her beautiful home.
Reading Donna's very critical and spiteful comments. we can only think that she did not appreciate that Sue had allowed her to use the normally private rooms, and expected service that would be normal at a fully staffed hotel, rather than a B&B. At no time did Issy beg for food, or make a nuisance of herself, quite the contrary, and never barked.

I must admit feeling slightly apprehensive before arriving at Melba House, not having stayed at a bed & breakfast's before, my partner suggested we try a B&B we usually stay in hotels, my fears were gone as soon as we were greeted by welcoming bubbly Sue and her cute dog Issy, she showed us to a fabulous suite she made us coffee and gave us her wonderful home made cake, she made us feel so welcome, something you don't get in a chain hotel, the breakfast served in our suite was to die for. we had a great weekend.
Thank you Sue and Issy, you have converted us to bed & breakfast's.
Will be back

We had such a wonderful experience for the first time at a bed and breakfast place where do I start from the impecabble spotless room furnished with exquisite Laura ashley curtains plus bedspread and gorgeous details to go with it like then electric blanket which we have never had in a normal 5 star hotel before the slippers to take home, port in a flask which my husband loved with yummy chocolates and biscuits and deliciious cakes in the afternoon that sue bakes herself and her brilliant four coarse gourmet breakfast she is definetely the best hostess with the mostess and made us feel extremely comfortable we felt like we had known her forever she even put izzy away for me cause im scared of dogs and made sure she gave us enough candles when we had a blackout and offered to book our anniversary dinner at the avalon which was a nice gesture and a great recommendation we thouroughly enjoyed the food and ambience. We where so impressed with with melba house and the friendly hospitality we wanted to take sue home with us we would highly recommend it to everyone who wants to get away for a relaxing romantic getaway looking at the terrfic reviews from people who stayed hear from the past was the reason we booked melba house.

Best regards,
John and Cassandra Arida

Generally we did not feel comfortable or welcomed. We were with two other couples and Sue had previously confirmed that we “will have full use of the house with the lounge room and dining room.” It certainly didn’t feel like that, especially with another guest room and her room just off the lounge/dining area.
When arriving and wanting to sit down in lounging area there was food left under the table from whenever. Her dog was sniffing our cheese and biscuits and she even gave the dog some of the food it had sniffed. We had to hunt for the TV remote control, then my husband had to tune set top box for channel 9. I felt she just didn’t want us in there. When she asked what we were doing that evening there was complete silence from her when told we were just getting pizza and watching the football game on TV. While we were in there she kept her door wide open- not sure why and there was junk everywhere in her area.
When I asked for a champagne glass I was told that breakages had to be paid for – I found her tone offensive. After we had eaten our Pizzas we took the boxes and beer bottles outside but could not locate the bins in the dark. The next day I was told off for leaving them at the front where people could see it, but she did not move them for over an hour and a half.
The kitchen was very messy and questionable hygiene standards. Mess everywhere. The dog was jumping on all lounges and begging at breakfast table. When leaving on the second day after breakfast i came back into the dining room and the dog was on the table eating the leftover food from breakfast. There were also detergent boxes and containers outside one of the guest rooms which really looked tacky.
Other irritating points were:
- One guest left a towel on the floor as per instructions but it was not replaced with a fresh one with old towel hung up again.
- No fresh milk put into fridge on second day.
- When I said the room was cold, she replied it was 21 degrees outside, no regard for how I felt. I was cold in my room all weekend. At the end of our stay after complaining about the cold room she said she had turned it on as soon as i complained- to which i said “It’s not working in our room”. She told me, “Yes it was”.
- Our friends asked for wine glasses and were told rudely that they were in the cupboard in their room. Our other friends only had beer glasses and no wine glasses in their cupboard.
- We paid an extra $50/night for a spa bath in our room which was really no more than a shower/bath and would not get two normal sized people in it.
- My husband found a light switch on the second evening, above it was a sign saying “Please do not touch or you will die.” Which we thought odd and unfriendly.
- Open fires in each room were not made up ready for use.
- On the second day she closed the door to the common area pretty much all afternoon. When I opened the door she carried on talking on the phone whilst I brought the plates in and totally ignored me. I should have just left them on the verandah.
Overall we found Sue had a cold, unfriendly and rude manner about her. She did not try to converse with us at all on the Saturday and came across as plain unfriendly.
After breakfast the second day, after making payment (I paid in full and did not ask for a reduction). I told her that i felt she was very unfriendly and rude and of all the complaints. I told her that we would never be coming back to Melba House again.

A very charming bed and breakfast place, owned by an equally charming lady, Sue. Sue makes you feel at home with her lovely rooms, wholesome breakfasts (especially the poached eggs and oatmeal porridge :)) and delicious chocolate cake. And who can forget Isabella (Izzy), Sue's American cocker spaniel, always wagging her tail and sniffing around our room when Sue brings us breakfast.

Melba House is conveniently located near the main street of Katoomba. Within walking distance is the railway station, and a variety of shops and restaurants. The hop on hop off bus stops nearby too.

Thanks Sue and Melba House for making our holiday so memorable.

A fabulous and friendly little guest house, Sue was very helpful with suggestions for eatery's, tourist attracts and spa's. Breakfast was wonderful and served in our room, with the help of Issy ( gorgeous little dog) whom i could have taken home.
Rooms had some fabulous little finishing touches, cushions, soaps and creams, flowers, port, biscuits, the list goes on and on!
Very relaxing, lots of DVD in library to help yourself too, and the supply of cake when one got back from a day out was welcoming.
We stayed 4 nights and would have liked a couple more.
Thank you Sue and Issy we had a great stay and look forward to coming back. and the sydney suggestions went down a treat.
Also thanks for picking us up and dropping us back to the the train station.

Room Tip: Honestly all three rooms were great!

Sue was very welcoming and certainly provided all the extra little touches that make a B&B warm and inviting and stand out from the rest. The home baked cake for afternoon tea, the lovely bathroom lotions, fresh flowers, lovely warm rooms with gorgeous curtains and well chosen prints made the sun shine on the cold wintry days. Melba House was so pleasant that we actually enjoyed the winter days in Katoomba.

The room was spacious and had a lovely bay window which looked out onto the garden, the spa was great for soaking away the cold, television reception was excellent and there was a DVD player and there were plenty of DVD's to borrow. Some furniture could be re-arranged so that the bathroom door opened without having to be mindful of the bedside table, or maybe a couple of small bedside tables instead of the round table would be more useful.

The breakfasts were hearty, to say the least, and served in the room in a relaxed and friendly way.

Melba House is only a block away from the shopping centre, and if you're energetic, you can walk to the Three Sisters and Echo Point, or you can take a bus from Lurline Street. It was close enough to walk to a number of eateries, and there are a number of good eating places in The Mountains.

Parking is curbside, but with such wide streets that's not really an issue. The return verandah was lovely in the morning for the sunshine and to breathe in some of that gorgeous mountain air.

We're so pleased we found Melba House and had such a positive experience in Katoomba. We have limited time to enjoy a few days away and this destination will draw us back for a short break that we know we will enjoy.

Room Tip: We stayed in two different rooms and both were lovely. The Dame Edna has a spa, a bay window and an...
