“Best B&B in Queenstown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2011

First of all, if you're reading this review, you are considering spending a night in Queenstown. My advice to you is: don't. Keep going. Keep on driving. Go to Strahan. Go to Zeehan. Go to Rosebery. Anything is better than Queenstown, which IMO is simply dreadful and depressing.

But if for some inexplicable reason you must stay in Queenstown, then Penghana B&B is the best place, hands down. The owners Bill and Maureen are wonderful, knowledgeable hosts. Their establishment, a listed nationl heritage building, is well-kept, clean, and spacious, and the breakfast was delicious and filling. My only complaint was that my room had a certain aged smell---I couldn't quite put my finger on it. But other than that I was quite pleased.

But to my first point---I made the mistake of stopping at Queenstown. Don't do the same. Keep on driving.

Our stay at Penghana was very comfortable. Bill and Maureen were professional and warm giving outstanding service. We enjoyed eating breakfast in the grand dining room at a table which seats 12 people .
Our evening meal was 3 courses with multiple choices on offer. It was served in style. Wine is available as the accommodation is licensed but we didn't avail ourselves of this choice.
Upstairs there is an elegant guest lounge room with views of the stark hills of Queenstown.Parking is secure, free and there's a billiard room downstairs.

Internet speed is good but if you use Optus there's very limited mobile coverage on the west coast of Tasmania.

we stayed 2 nights with 3 young kids (5y,3y, 6mth).
the 19century house was built to house the general mgr of the mines. now a B&B, but still breathes the charms of that era.

As the rest of our accmodations in Tasmania were hotels, this place stood out a bit. We were the only guest and i guess that contributed to the pleasant, peaceful stay.
In many of the hotels we didnot have what we enjoyed here: a free wireless internet connection. Also dvd playersin each room & good choice of dvds available in central living room (to be shared by all guests). But that was the only thing whichcould entertain our kids (not to our surprise though).

I would not particularly recommend it for young families. Like most B&Bs better suited for the older couples.

Good value for money. Compared to other Queenstown accomodations not the cheapest, but quite an historic ambiance & William and Maureen are good hosts.

Bill and Maureen's hospitality was as warm as the heat pumps

Despite being the only ones staying in a cool off season time the entire large building was beautifully warm thanks to the generous use of heat pumps.

Fascinating place. Even the attic rooms weren't off limits!

We stayed at Penghana Guest House for 3 nights on a recent visit to the west coast of Tasmania. Bill and Maureen were excellent hosts. We had arrived rather late on our first evening, and despite Bill trying to find somewhere in Queenstown that was still serviing food (without success) Maureen kindly provided some sandwiches and lovely applle crumble. A good welcome!
The bed was superbly comfortable, and the breakfast was first-class.
Bill's knowledge of the area was a great help.
We would highly recommend this accommodation.
