“Ed Fringe Stopover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

After four and a half hours drive, we were in need of a warm welcome. We got it. The impressive entrance promised much. No brochure forthcoming, we discovered the hotel had very recently changed hands which explained the tasteful redecoration of some public rooms and an inspired reorganisation of dining room to lounge. The dining room has a new intimacy and the lounge now enjoys a spaciousness and good views of the beautiful surrounding sheep-filled countryside. Our bedrooms were freshly decorated and the large bathrooms though stark were clean, new and the only thing missing was a magnifying mirror & fluffy bathrobe. However, the white towels were fluffy, the bed sheets crisp and white, the beds well sprung and comfortable. The water trickled a bit in the shower but the bath was long enough for a tall person to stretch out and enjoy a good soak with expensive smelling bath salts provided. The young efficient staff seemed to enjoy their jobs and their charm, enthusiasm, skill and prompt attention to our requests impressed three weary travellers. The pre-supper drinks arrived promptly. We all chose scallops as a starter which did not disappoint and the main course of either pork or lamb was cooked perfectly - the meat tender, the crackling crisp and the veg al dente. Just what we wanted - with many years of fine dining around the world between us, we are not easy to please! A cheese course provided a generous and varied selection but the lemon sorbet/lemon soufflé/lemon-curd-filled meringues to finish our meal was a divine choice. All was served with style and a smile by a jolly waiter who though young, was well trained and seemed to understand the fine line between friendliness and discreet efficiency. After a good night's sleep we ate a copious breakfast - generous portions again and cooked to order. It was obvious this had been cooked freshly and our coffee was strong and expensive, not weak and brown as is so often the case in British hotels. The bills were reasonable. We resumed our journey reluctantly and agreed Solberge Hall will definitely be our stopover again same time next year

Room Tip: Ask for either room 7 or 8 - we loved them, even though our view was mostly of greenery rather than...

As we lived away we decided to stay over night after our friends Daughters Wedding,we stayed in what they classed as a "better room" Room No.9.
The room looked ok on first impressions. As it was on the first floor we had an opening outside door to a fire escape....but this meant we could not leave the window open to allow fresh air in as anyone could have entered the room from outside! I know they have to have fire escapes but a little thought to cooling the room might help. Also this room is at he front of the Hotel and at night is beautifully lit by spot lights......however due to ill fitting curtains and no blackouts so is you room plus at this time of year the morning sun lights the room at about 0600hrs!!!

Room Tip: Don't choose room 9 !!!

Just attended our son's wedding on the 20th July 2013 and would like to thank all the staff for making this a very, very special day. A splendid hotel in beautiful surroundings, the day was a success from start to finish, the staff were extremely helpful, friendly and attentive. The wedding breakfast, service and all round efficiency was very good and nothing too much trouble. We had a lovely room at the front of the building with a four poster bed having been recently refurbished. Would recommend this hotel. Martin & Elaine

Room Tip: Best rooms at front, but all rooms good

My husband and I visited this hotel to attend the wedding of our friends son. We decided to stay the night so we could totally relax. This is a fairly small hotel in attractive surroundings. The wedding party gathered in a pleasant room for drinks before the wedding breakfast and then moved into a beautifully decorated wedding room. The meal was only fair at best and not well presented. When the live band started to play the music was understandable very loud so we decided to take our drinks into the reception room. So lovely and peaceful on a comfortable settee in front of the open window. The hotel manager then told us we would have to move as he was closing this room. After some "discussion" we were put out of this room into a small
dark sitting room with very few chairs. I explained that we were not only guests of the brides parents but guests of the hotel and staying the night but to no avail and the hotel manager locked the doors to the reception room. The manager dealt with the situation badly to say the least. I have emailed to a higher level, eventually received a reply after having to email again to find out why I had not had a reply. Not really bothered was the impression I got! However, in agreement with me that the facilities of the hotel should surely be available to paying guests. So hopefully this unpleasant situation wont arise again...but I wouldnt be confident.
On the subject of price the rooms were slightly discounted for the guests of the wedding but the drinks from the bar were terribly expensive.
The room we had, room 9, was very pleasant but the bed for whatever reason was very uncomfortable and the TV, even though the remote turned it off, sent alternate flashing lights into the room. To actually stop this I had to climb onto the furniture and unplug it as the socket was high on the wall, slightly comedic if it had not been 3am! I am reasonably local to this hotel and after the service we got and how badly the manager dealt with our situation I most certainly will not be recommending to anyone coming to the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.

I stayed here for a conference, spacious room, very well appointed with a good view over picturesque countryside. Lovely atmosphere in hotel with attentive staff who carried my luggage to my room! Furniture and fittings are in keeping with style of a grand country house. Food was excellent from dinner on first night to a buffet lunch the next day. Looking forward to a return visit!

Room Tip: Ask for one of the best rooms at the front of the hotel-room 1 has a 4-poster bed!

Booked for a relaxing weekend, meals were beautiful, staff were very attentive, nothing was a problem for them, beautiful log fire burning away, rooms very big and grand we were there in feb so the rooms were a little cold. But they provided heaters. There was not as much grounds to walk around as we expected. Would definitely recommend and would not hesitate to return.
