“Fantasic Holiday!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

We chartered Aliara for 8 nights in August 2013 with some of our family from NZ (we are based in Central Queensland).

We had a superb holiday and would definitely recommend Whitsunday Escape to anyone considering a Whitsunday holiday.

The team was extremely helpful right from the planning stage. We booked the holiday whilst in NZ and we really appreciated Jess & Tegan contacting us in NZ to answer any questions we had. The communication (mostly via email as this was most convenient for us) was extremely informative yet easy to follow and most of all very helpful. It made the planning and lead up to our holiday very easy and took the stress out of the planning.

We highly recommend the night aboard at the Marina beforehand as it is a great chance to familiarise ourselves with the yacht and most of all it allowed the children to familiarise too.
The orientation was fantastic and we feel it covered all the necessary topics, we personally felt there was nothing we would change about this given the choice. Ben was very easy to get along with, his experience was obvious but he had a wonderful ability to explain things to our less experienced sailors. Thank you very much Ben.

Our actual holiday was marvellous and something we would like to do again when the kids are older. We thoroughly enjoyed the catamaran but next time we would probably opt for a monohull having already experienced the Whitsundays in a cat.

Having sailing tourism experience in the Bay of Islands in NZ we weren’t sure what to expect of the Whitsundays but we had a wonderful time and were very lucky to have beautiful weather and see whales, turtles and beautiful coral & tropical fish.

We would like to personally thank those we met: Wes, Ben, Alita, Jess, Rose and also thank those who assisted us with our behind the scenes holiday planning. The Whitsunday Escape Team are highly professional, extremely knowledgeable and very friendly, thanks guys!

“Licence to have a fabulous time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

Hiring a Seawind 1160 named Licence to Keel for a 7-day sail from this company proved very easy but very thorough. Our crew of 6 stayed onboard (3 double cabins) the night before going out and this allowed us to get familiar with the boat and sort out our gear. The check on our ability to sail ourselves was very good and the safety briefing comprehensive and easily understood.

It was the beginning of seven days of exploring the Whitsundays, a couple of interesting walks, fascinating places to see and anchor overnight and some fun sailing despite the 3 days of high wind warnings. The Seawind was stable, the equipment first class and its sailing performance in some fairly windy weather with moderate seas just superb. With less than a third of the jib set and no main, it shot along at 6-9 knots much to everyone's amazement.

Our water economy was a bit slack but the base crew happily helped us tie up while we took on more. It is something to watch on a longer (4+ days) trip.

The office staff was extremely helpful and courteous during the booking process and farewelled us royally when we finally and reluctantly returned to terra firma. Highly recommended as an answer to a bucket list special.

“Absolutely Brilliant!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013 via mobile

My family (4adults) decided to hire a Seawind 1000XLfrom Tuesday to Friday. It suited us perfectly as our kids joined us from melbourne for the break. We were allowed to use the boat free of charge in the mooring for the Monday night so the kids slept onboard. This enabled us to put all our supplies etc and get familiar with the boat. The next morning at 8am we were briefed by Ben. It takes about 3 hrs, but is definitely essential. After leaning how to drop anchor away from the marina and tie up to bouys, by 12 we were on our way. My son (21) helped sail, steer and navigate, my daughter (24) was in charge of radio communication and electric anchoring and I was
cook. We all worked well together as a team and had an absolute ball! The weather was perfect and a good breeze perfect for sailing. We had whales swimming next to us, dolphins, turtles and stingrays.
The boat was perfectly equipped and spotless. The hot shower on the back deck was fun for open air showering and the trapezes out the front great for sunbaking. We couldn't speak more highly of Whitsunday Escape. From the moment we first spoke to them to the end, they were extremely friendly and helpful. For a family teamwork bonding holiday , it was great! My husband took two rods and fished his heart out! Giant trevally, reef shark, grunter etc
Must dos, are: Whitehaven beach, walk to the top of Tongue bay lookout to see the swirly sands, Nara Inlet ( don't swim in there as that's where the sharks breed) as I was to find out later...
We will definitely do this again, it was the most amazing holiday and The kids think it should be an annual event ! ( they can shout next time)

“Great people but some aspects let the boat down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013

We travelled from the UK and rented a yacht from Whitsunday Escape as part of a longer trip to Hong Kong and Australia. The yacht charter was booked online and was very easy to do and the staff were very helpful always volunteering to ring me at a pre arranged time in order to save me the cost of a call from the UK.
We thouroughtly enjoyed our trip and sailing the Whitsundays is a magical experience and highly recommended.
Our boat was a Jeanneau 40.3 named Tiger Blue and while she was OK as far as the engine, rigging etc was concerned there were a few aspects that let the boat down.
The upholstery inside looked every bit of its age (6 years) and re upholstering every couple of years would make a terrific difference. When you get aboard a boat and it looks tatty inside it kind of sets a mood. The bow cabin V berth cushins had some rather unpleasant looking stains on them. Many of the cupboard catches were faulty and popped out when you openend and closed them; a small thing but annoying and very easily fixed.
My main concern was with the lifejackets and safety kit. The lifejackets were the very old fashioned bulky type filled with polystyrene blocks (one of my sons described them as like the ones they wore in the film Titanic) and not suited to be worn around the boat on a regular basis. It was pretty calm on our visit to the Whitsundays but like anywhere it can blow up rough so why the comapny hasn't invested in the lighweight auto inflating type lifejackets that you get typically in a Eurpoean charter was a puzzle.
There were also no safety lines for the lifejackets and even of there had been there was virtually nowhere to clip on with no jackstays fitted. Again essential if it blow up a bit rough and as skipper very reassring if you need to send crew up to the mast or anchor locker.
The company calls you on the radio every morning and afternoon to check you're OK and what your plans for the day are. This is good but our radio didn't work very well in most of the places around the islands so it was often difficult to hear them calling and for them to hear what we were saying. They claim to monitor various channels throughout the day but we were almost never able to get a reply when hailing them on the radio. This resulted in a number of very expensive phone calls from my UK mobile to their base and there are many areas where there is no phone signal.
There was no deck scrubber aboard and no hose in the anchor locker so not easy to keep the boat looking clean. Many of the anchorages have a thick grey mud on the bottom which is great for holding but comes up all over the anchor and chain with no way to wash it off.
My final point is that there were no binoculars and no hand bearing compass on board. The Whitsundays are pretty easy to navigate around but nevertheless these are basic important items to have aboard any boat in my view particularly as many of the navigation marks in Australia are quite small and not easy to see.
As I said, we had a great time sailing the Whitsundays but there are lots of other charter companies operating from Abel Point Marina and if visiting there in future I would be checking on some of the things mentioned here which are always taken as given when chartering in Europe.
These are relatively small things for the company to put right and would make the difference between a good experience and a great experience.

Hi Ron

We are pleased you enjoyed your trip and thanks for the comments. In response to your feedback and as part of our ongoing maintenance:

• The upholstery has been recovered and cabin latches have been attended to.

• The life jackets are more difficult as Australian laws require us to supply the bulky coastal jackets, we would need to have two sets on each boat. We do not supply harnesses and jackstays and we supply fitted life jackets for children.

• Communication is a problem in the area as the mountains require the use of VHF repeater frequencies which are prone to interference.

• The smaller boats in our fleet do not have deck wash pumps due to space constraints but we provide a bucket on a rope.

Based on your feedback we have programmed the introduction of binoculars and hand bearing compasses on all vessels and will modify the ‘What to Bring’ page of web site once fully introduced.

We look forward to seeing you again in the Whitsundays.
