“Really nice hostel, but ANTS!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

Stayed here for 4 nights either side of our Whitsundays sailing trip. The staff were friendly and helpful, rooms were big with plenty of space for bags, toilet and bathroom in the room was big and clean, kitchen in the room was big but there were hundreds of ants in the kitchen and in the cupboard next to the beds. The kitchen in the common room was clean, big and tidy. Location was excellent as at the top of town with everything in walking distance.

I shared a 4 bed dorm with ensuite bathroom. Outside were hammocks, a swimming poole and next door a pub that offered a steak meal and a drink for 10 AUD! " mins from the beach and lagoon. Excellent washing facilities and kitchen. Clean and friendly with helpful staff.

The layout of the rooms is nice, not your average hostel. The reception is a good walk from some of the back rooms. We checked in to a private roomand received our key, after walking back to the room we found that there was already somebody stayin in it. Had to go back to reception to change rooms. The second room we were put in was not good at all. The air con unit was about 100 years old so all sorts of insects were comin in through it. The 2 windows in the bathroom would not close. After spending days on Fraiser Island gettin eaten by mozzies I was not willing to stay in a room with the windows opened all night. Reception staff did not seem to understand this at all and looked up to heaven when I tryed to explain.
Finally after walking back and over for a 3rd time, the 3rd room was a little better, although 1 of the windows in the bathroom wouldnt close so we just stuffed a bedsheet in it tryin to cover it as best as possible. We still had mozzies, ants, geckos and cocroaches in our room.

Good location, decent value, but we were infested with ants...they were in our beds. When I informed the front desk about this, I was told it was because it had rained and they seek shelter inside during the rain. The only thing was it hadn't rained the day we arrived. The need to do a massivae extermination instead of brushing off a customer's comments. The bar across the street offers a decent $10 meal for base guests.

We stayed here for a night before departing for the Whitsundays and then a few nights afterwards. We found it pleasant enough, the rooms were very spacious, there was an ensuite and even a fridge and sink. Although the beds were really creaky and the pillows seemed as though they had been through the washing machine a few times as it was like resting your head on bubble wrap. The aircon was good, and there was a little balcony to sit out on at night or whenever you wanted to sit and chill out. The staff at reception were ok depending on who you got, although when we returned from our trip and tried to check in at 1.55 the lady told us we had to go away and wait 5 minutes. Very helpful lady...

So why do I not give it a higher rating you may ask? Well unfortunately the whole hostel was pretty filthy. The floor in the room was disgusting and you had black feet after walking from your bed to the bathroom and the floor in the bathroom was even worse. When housekeeping came in and just changed the toilet roll without cleaning anything I asked them if they would mind cleaning the bathroom a bit. Apparently cleaning the bathroom in this hostel consits of using a stinking black mop and running it over the floor, which just spread the grime and hair around more. We even had several cockroaches in the room running around. This all left me baffled as every morning a total of 8 members of housekeeping would come into the room to clean it!(I use the term clean loosely)

The kitchen was no better, it was ok during the day, but in the evening it generally looked like a bomb had gone off. Staff seemed to be wondering around but not actually doing anything, and there was one sponge for the three sinks in there.

All in all it's a nice hostel, has great potential but needs a really good clean and some housekeeping staff that take pride in their work.

Dear Guest,
We thank you for your feedback as it is important to us. Without it we would not know areas in which may need improvement.
In regards to your feedback regarding the kitchen. Staff try their best to keep on top of the cleaning. But with a continual turnover of guests in and out of the kitchen we cannot be their all the time. The kitchen is cleaned 3 times a day by housekeepers, and monitored by reception when we are not busy on the front desk.
Housekeeping staff have also been addressed in regards to your room. As part of a housekeepers daily job, floors and bathrooms are to be cleaned, given that the floor is free from belongings which they are usually very good with.
We shall also address the pest issue. However, being north queensland with the heat and the rain it can often attrack this type of pest. Again thank you for your feedback and we wish you the best with your travels

For a hostel, this place exceeds expectations. They even give you free shampoo, conditioners, soap, and a towel. Our room (sanctuary) even had a Jacuzzi. It was not too clean though so we still showered with our sandals on. However, it was spacious, and very well located. The downside was that there were ants everywhere... everywhere! I woke up with a few on my body. We complained but they just said it's expected to happen when it rains.. Hmm I don't think so.

But we paid so little that I guess we got what we paid for..... plus 3 free glasses of cheap sparkling wine. Not too shabby.
