The place as a whole is ok. The rooms are little huts where 8 bed dorms share 2 shower rooms. There is a swimming pool onsite but we did not go here because the lagoon is accross the road. Airlie beach is one strip so location is not an issue. They have storage garages to keep your stuff in but they only open it at certain times. This hostel would have been ok had it not been for the kitchen.
We arrived at 7am and could not check in yet but we went to the kitchen to drop off our stuff and get some breakfast. OMG - i have never seen anything so bad! HEalth inspectors need to come here and shut it down! It looked like there had been a food fight or something from all the food that was left around the whole kitchen and it had been left like that overnight with the door open to attract all sorts of wildlife. The smell was horrid! We didnt want to leave our food in the kitchen but luckily had no fridge stuff because there was some sort of mould/cheese growing from what must have once been spilt milk/yoghurt!
We never went back except to pick up our kitchen back after our trip round the whitsundays and it was not in any better condition. I even went to check the fridge to see if anyone had cleaned the cheesy mould and nearly slipped on more nasty food that was overflowing from the bins...

I went to Nomads Airlie Beach to visit the Great Barrier Reef.
I got booked for the wrong day to go to the reef (by a representative of Nomads Airlie Beach) I got booked on the day I was leaving.
I did not get to see the reef. I asked for my money back, because I paid to go to the reef - and the representative yelled at me!
I didn't get my money back for a trip I paid for and never went on until about three months and a few emails later.
I would never stay here or at a Nomads again. The was the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. I live in Canada and don't think I will be able to travel to the reef again for some time.

The camping area is good and cheap at $5pp but the facilities are pretty bad. The showers are in a porter cabin and half them have no light or broken shower heads. A little maintenance and this bless could be above average. Great location, friendly staff.

One of the best hostels I've stayed in. The rooms were extremely nice and very clean. It was cool to stay in a "villa" and nice having a bathroom for just our room (8 people). The pool and property was really nice and the kitchen was fine, although maybe a little dirty. It's a fun environment for young people to hang out and meet each other. One of the few negatives was how expensive internet was, although that is typical for Australian hotels.

As we travelled up the East Coast, several other backpackers have expressed their delight at being part of this chain Hostel group which offer discounts if you buy a membership card. The location and the staff are friendly at this place but thats as far as it goes. The kitchen has got to be the worst. Deposits of $20 are required to get your hands on a mug and some cutlery. The rest of the cooking equipment is "provided" - this loose term refers to the fact that there are no bowls and several people MUST eat their noodles and cornflakes from the cooking pots. I mentioned this to reception who was shocked but merely only stated that the bowls should "be around somewhere"...
The kitchen itself has a lot of flies and there are signs up stating that ants will eat your food if you do not have it sealed in airtight containers...
It also has very dated, dangerous equipment, half broken toasters, frying pans with no handles, and hobs which take a small eternity to reach a heat at which ants and other food can be cooked at...
Other than that, the grass is green and the pool is blue...ish

Room Tip: Several other backpackers to choose from in Airlie beach some of which are cheaper, smaller, and alt...

Stayed in a 10 bed dorm, wasnt too bad stayed in worse places, room seemed clean enough didn't have trouble with the shower room as I hardly saw anyone from my dorm.
The kitchen was too small, completely packed and overcrowded was a good 2 hour wait to prepare and cook dinner so ended up going out. The staff seemed rude, called my friend a c*** because he was drunk and abit loud. Stupid gangster rap was being blasted out 24/7 which was unpleasant.
I think there's nicer places to stay in Airlie.
