“Disappointing given what it promised on its website”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2008

Well this hotel was a little disappointing.

We went to Cairns to celebrate our 1st anniversary and chose this hotel based on the facilities provided that they advertised on their website.

The hotel said it had a bar and restaurant, this has been closed down. Also, our information kit provided to us at check-in informed us our room would be serviced daily but it was not serviced at all during our stay. We queries this at check-out and didn't get a satisfactory response.

However, the room was quite nice with a nice view over the pool in the centre of the complex. Plenty of room in the 1 bedroom apartment.

If we ever go back that way to travel, we'll consider other hotels next time.

On check in we were greeted by an unfriendly staff member who grunted that our room was not ready and then proceeded to check us into a a room that had not been cleaned from night before. ie beds unmade and even empty tequila bottles strewn accross room.
When we went downstairs to reception to let them know a very hostile young man rolled his eyes and ordered us to sit at the bar while we waited for housekeeping to clean the room.
It was 330pm mind you and we had previously been told check in would be at 2 pm.
We finally were given the keys to the same room at 4pm. You could see that obviously staff had done a rush job, the place was filthy there was leftover soap in the bathroom and no fresh towels.
The next morning when we asked the cleaning staff to please do a thorough clean they got huffy and stomped about.. later that day we came back to our room after a lovely day at the beach to find 2 staff members sitting on our bed watching a music channel- Where were our Privacy rights??
We were supposed to stay here for 4 nights and had been planning our holiday for some time but after the second night of being disapointed we decided to head into town and stayed at a Rydges which although a little run down was MUCH cleaner and hassle free.
I WOULD not Stay in this hotel again or recommend it to anyone i know.

We love it here so much -- we've stayed here three times so far --that we're heading back again for Christmas 2008. We love the fully equipped kitchen, and that there's two bathrooms, two bedrooms, and washer/dryer. Makes our holiday with a child so easy. We do both eating in and dining out -- there's a great deli and an ice cream shop on site that we really like. The pool area is like a wonderland, surrounded by trees -- a great place for kids to run around and for adults to have wine, cheese, and crackers before dinner. And then you can hit their great gym!

We just loved the Grand Mercure! The room was clean, large, and had everything that we needed for our stay. The kitchenette had everything that we needed if we wanted to stay in. The balcony was large and had nice outdoor furniture.

We were also impressed that there were two plasma tvs - one in the bedroom and in the lounge area.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The pool was amazing! Many sunbeds around the pool and even a bbq area.

We checked out the restaurant and thought it was too pricey. Then we discovered that nearly all the restaurants in Palm Cove were pricey. Part of our package included a 15% discount to the bar and restaurant which then made the restaurant dining more affordable. If you are on a budget, you can't beat the pub meal around the corner from the hotel!

I would recommend this hotel to everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.

this place just doesn't have a good feel to it.

We stayed in one of the loft rooms for 3 nights at the end of our 3 week trip.

Upon seeing the room I asked to move as bizarrely there were no curtains and the room was very overlooked. I was told that there were no other loft rooms available and so we had to make do.

The balcony was so dirty we never used it. The furniture on the balcony was also very tired and dirty with stains and rips. I asked twice at reception for someone to clean the floor but both of these requests were ignored (the second time I was told that lots of their cleaning staff were hungover from the racing in Cairns the day before and so hadn't turned up for work).

The bar in the evening was mostly used by staff from the kitchens who glared at you as you walked by as if they didn't want to be disturbed.

I could go on and on about all the annoying little things that were wrong with this place - including the main security pass system letting you into the building being broken so anyone can get in, not to mention finding a member of staff downstairs in our room only to be told "sorry I didn't realise anyone was in here" before quickly scurrying out the door!

Only positive thing about this place are the two gift shops which can be found near reception. The women in both of these shops were very polite and both had some really lovely things in.
With so many other nice places to stay in Palm Cove I would not go back to this place and would not recommend it to anyone else either.

We have just returned from 7 nights at the Grand Mercure Rockford Palm Cove. It was a surprise for my Husband's Birthday and I am very pleased with the choice of location. Palm Cove is truly a beautiful area to stay in and not a touristy as Port Douglas. The accomdodation itself was fantastic. We were booked into a studio room, however when we got there, had found that we had been upgraded to a studio loft apartment. The room is over two levels, hence the "loft". Downstairs contains the Kitchen (with dishwasher), Dining and Living areas and upstairs contains the bedroom with built in robe and bathroom with shower and toilet. There is a hairdryer in the bathroom, so don't bother taking one, as I did, as it was a waste of space in the suitcase. There is also a front loading washing machine and a dryer in a cupboard next to the built in robe. There is airconditioning and ceiling fans upstairs and downstairs, with separate control panels. Out on the large balcony is a day bed which was a nice addition. The apartment is equiped with tea, coffee, sugar, milk, dishwashing liquid and washing powder etc. Being apartments, the rooms are not serviced daily, however as we were staying for 7 days our room was serviced once. More frequent servicing can be arranged at an additional cost. We were also told to ask for more provisions if we ran out. Next to the complex is the Palm Cove Tavern which has good meals at good prices. We called it our "local" as we spent quite a bit of time there! We are looking forward to returning again in the future and will definately book the studio loft if available.

Hubby and I stayed 3 nights in October 2007. We both thought the location of Grand Mecure was excellent- walking distance to everything. The newly renovated studio room met and exceeded our expectations - it included a small kitchenette, ample to make a quick brekky or prepare dips/cheeses/crackers for a relaxing pre dinner drinks on our (small) balcony. My hubby was particulary impressed with the bed comfort and pillows- he travels very often for work and never, ever enjoys a good night sleep - needless to say he slept very soundly as the rooms are also very quiet/well sound proofed.

Even better the excellent rate we received as an Accor member (much, much cheaper than discount websites) and for a longer stay I would be inclined to request a loft room with a double day bed out on a much more bigger balcony. Overall, we had no complaints- we experienced excellent service in a top resort in an specatular location.

  • Liked — very contemporary design and furnishings
  • Disliked — would be nice to have ocean views
