“Lovely - but beware the wedding!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2009

We spent 8 nights at Reef House in June. The location was superb and the hotel was lovely. I hesitated in booking here due to some of the previous poor reviews, but the hotel was in great condition and had a cosy, private atmosphere.

Two big turnoffs - and they were big.

The bed was THE most uncomfortable mattress that either my husband or I had slept on. I am not precious, but I literally had frozen shoulder for two days because the mattress was so hard.

Also, we had 3 weddings hosted at the hotel in our 8 night stay. Unfortunately there is not a spearate area designated for weddings - they take over the hotel. The first two resulted in the restuarant being closed, and the 3rd a closure of a pool for most of the afternoon. Worst of all, the area they are held in is completely open to the hotel rooms so you get the noise of the whole wedding - live band and all - in your room until it is over. The previous reviewer (wedding guest) must have been unlucky. On both occasions of the evening weddings, the noise was unbearable until around 10pm.

Clearly the hotel must make a lot of cash from these functions, but no compensation is offered to guests. I asked for some additional sunloungers to be moved to the remaining pool when they had all run out when the pool was closed for wedding #3 only to be told by staff that it would not be possible. we were basically forced to sit in our room rather than enjoy the pool - a bit offputting considering we had paid to use the hotel facilities.

As much as I loved the hotel, it was very clear that weddings take priority over hotel guests which left a sour taste in my mouth..would only stay mid week in future to avoid the weddings - and only if the matresses were replaced!

Reef House: Gorgeous public areas (pool, entrance, restaurant). Stayed in Brig Room, very light and bright, clean, nice balcony with loungers perfect for a short stay. Did not try restaurant, menu looked fabulous (in line with the price I would say)...

Palm Cove: SOOO relaxing, lovely beach, good watersport access from beach, all locals we met were friendly.

Eating out: Can be fairly expensive. Tried the local pizza place (v. good), and the french restaurant (also very yummy, service quite slow, however they were FLAT OUT!)

Drinking: Went to Cockys? for happy hour.. great priced beers, nice place to sit and watch the world go by.

Do yourself a favour and visit this beautiful part of the world!!

We went here based on the high reviews from this web site. The property is in the desirable Palm Cove and the verandah room was lovely. The bath was average, actually a little on the small side. There were a few oddities. There were a few of those nasty two piece hangers like they have in cheap motels. There were no drawers to store clothing. We were on a month trip with varieties of climates, so it was inconvenient to live out of the suitcases for 5 nights. Although they offered internet in the room, there was no table or desk to place the computer. A couple of pieces of furniture would have made a big difference here. The restaurant was good but overpriced. There are many nice places to eat in Palm Cove at reasonable prices. Basically, we felt it was not worth the price tag. On the plus side, the public areas were beautiful and the verandah was very nice.

Didn't stay here, but came to Palm Cove to attend a wedding at this hotel. The wedding couple stayed here and were adequately satisfied with their accomodation.
The wedding feast was lovely, the setting was superb, the staff were professional. What a lovely evening! Just one thing spoilt it, the other guests were complaining about our wedding party before 7pm. Thanks to their miserable attitude to our family wedding, it had to be wound up too early. Owners - warn guests of pre-eminent booked weddings and prepare them for a bit of normal wedding noise for the evening. But, don't shut down a wedding party prematurely in the evening! Big mistake! Couldn't possibly recommend the hotel for a wedding, only because of this! What a shame, because everything else was perfect:(

We arrived home yesterday from a four night stay at the Sebel Reef House. It was truly perfect and we had a lovely time. We splurged on a Verandah Spa Room and it was well worth the cost. The spa was enormous and we would sit there sipping champagne gazing out over the ocean....

The room is large and the verandah very spacious with two sun beds and a table and two chairs. You could host a party out there! The bed was a little bit hard but I really like a soft bed so I think most people will find it quite comfy.

There were lots of thoughtful little things that make a big difference such as:
- 4 soft thick bath towels each day plus two pool towels
- unlimited pool towels out near the pool for the hotel guests to help themselves
- the 'honour' bar system and evening free punch
- lovely toiletries
- I rang down for extra towels and they arrived within minutes
- I wandered down to reception looking for ice for our ice-bucket and it was whisked away and immediately filled and returned with a big smile
- A turn down service at night
- I organised for a bottle of champagne to be in our room upon arrival as a surprise to hubby - and it was there and nicely chilled in an ice bucket ready for our first spa!

Apart from one slightly snooty male reception staff member, everyone else bent over backwards to help us and they always offered a friendly greeting as you walked past.

I have written some restaurant reviews separately.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Sebel Reef House – it is relaxed and very laid-back. It is quiet and you don’t have staff running around the pool offering drinks or similar – so if that is the kind of hotel you are looking for then this may not be for you. If you are looking for peaceful ambience - but with efficient service when you need it then I recommend this hotel heartily.

We spent 9 nights here in a brigadier room. The location is super. The rooms are small and the bathroom had no bath tub which I would expect from this standard hotel!! , Our room was opposite the restaurant but the garden area around the rooms sheilds you from most of the noise, although, every morning we seemed to have the gardener working on this area so we felt we were overlooked seating out on the swing chair. We enjoyed our time here the food was good and the spa massage was lovely, but on the last night of our stay it all went wrong!! we had a man enter our room with a key around 11ish, only to find out the next morning he was staff returning chairs to the wrong room! The toliet flush broke and was nosy with running water all night and to cap it all the T.V. turn itself on a 3.30am welcoming us to the hotel.!! We had an very early long flight to endure and with not much sleep this was a shame as this was our last impression of Sebel Reef Hotel....

After recently reading some poor reviews I was a little concerned about our upcoming stay at the Sebel Reef Palm Cove.
I need not have worried. From the minute we were greeted at Reception until the moment of departure we were very impressed with everything.
We had already booked into a Verandah Spa room, but were told on arrival that we had been upgraded. Still a spa room but this one was very spacious with a very private balcony complete with a private outdoor spa and with some water views. The room was really comfortable and very clean, we had no complaints whatsoever. A complimentary bottle of Champagne and card welcoming us and wishing us a Happy Anniversary was a very nice touch.
The restaurant , where we enjoyed breakfast and dinner, was perfectly situated looking out to the beach, with very friendly attentive waiters and the food was just delicious.
Being situated right across from the beach, the hotel was in a great position and we enjoyed long walks on the beach (with no signs of any saltwater crocs)!!!! and we walked up & down the street checking out all the other hotels and restaurants, but still was very happy with the one we had chosen.
A day trip was organised by reception and all went to plan, we were picked up and dropped back off at the end of a glorious day, visiting Green Island and snorkling on the Barrier Reef.
We also enjoyed the complimentary alcoholic punch which was served at the Brigadier Honour Bar at 5pm each evening.... we took our glasses out by one of the 3 pools and enjoyed a few free top ups as we lazed by the pool relaxing and listening to the sound of the waterfall.
On our last day we went to the Hotel Spa for a Kodo couples Massage, which was wonderfully relaxing thanks to Michelle... we could have spent the whole day there.
All in all, ignore anything you may have read that was not complimentary about this hotel. I'm very fussy and I had no complaints. It was a really nice boutique hotel, clean and well maintained, perfectly situated and we have already decided that we will rebook later in the year (for much longer this time) and will suggest to our friends that they join us to also enjoy the experience.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a relaxing, romantic experience.
