I travelled to Kununurra from Sydney (There is a handy connection via Darwin on Monday's with Virgin Australia) for business for the first time in SEP13.
My assistant booked me into the PKG based on the reviews and the fact that the PKG has a 25m pool. (I swim laps).
The descent by plane to KNX from DRW is quite spectacular and so I arrived in KNX somewhat impressed.
Mark a Manager at PKG greeted me at the Airport and drove me to the hotel - which I actually hadn't expected.
Folks, Kununurra is in far north Western Australia very remote and very hot and th actual town has a population of about 6000 people BUT the Ord River valley and mining provide significant economic resources for the region. For a small, remote place it sure punches above its weight.
But back to the review, the PKG is, as one reviewer has noted, "large and sprawling" this means that it is "compound style". Reception provided me with a map to locate my room - Nr 651. I did get lost on first attempt. However it is very well maintained and the entire complex surrounds the rather excellent 25m pool - which has its own lap lanes.
My room was large, clean, well maintained. The bathroom was also large, clean and well maintained. I must make note of the excellent walk-in shower that was roomy and functional (i.e. no weird taps).
Of greatest importance the room felt welcoming and comfortable - hugely important for business travel . The air con worked, the TV remote etc was logical and I could find all the light switches easily enough. (Hunting for light switches is annoying).
All in all the room and the bed was very good.
I would suggest the following:
The "work corner" was literally that. i was hemmed in by two concrete walls and the table and chair are both very heavy set. .. No easy roll back chair here. (Remember I came on business). Getting in and out of the "work corner" usually resulted in me hitting some part of my legs/knees on something. Lighting in the "work corner" made it un-usable for the same outside of day light. (The sun sets at 5.30pm or so).
The lighting in general could definitely be improved in the room. This is NOT an uncommon problem I find.
Saying all of that the room was pretty good. (Note: sachets of Nescafe Blend 43 were provided .. but I always travel with my fresh coffee - this is remote Australia after all).
The PKG has its own restaurant and bar and outside dining areas. These are really strong points of the establishment.
The menu in the restaurant is new, fresh and interesting. The wine list great! The chef /cook is clearly talented. Al meals i had at the PKG restaurant were really very high standard and worthy or mention. I have to say this - they also do rather excellent garlic bread!
But .. oh no.. the service staff in the restaurant and bar provided sometimes excellent, sometimes unsatisfactory service. This stands out when you are paying correct prices foe restaurant quality food and service.
The unsatisfactory service from front of house staff seems o result entirely from overseas temporary visa holders being "new on the job". Guess what? Without these people there wouldn't be any service. However one staff member I spoke to had no idea where the toilets were located - so improvement should be easy.
But I reiterate that the food in the restaurant is excellent.
So, would i stay at the PKG again? For sure. the 25m lap pool is a real winner for me and all staff were courteous and helpful and mostly even had good humour.
Follow the map of the hotel carefully before running off trying to find your room!

I am so glad you had an enjoyable stay at Pinctada Kimberley Grande.
The kind comments you made regarding the high standard of meals and to quote "the food in the restaurant was excellent" have been passed onto chef who is very happy that you took the time to mention his menu.
We have addressed the communication issue with new staff and have re enforced the induction process.
I look forward to catching up the next time you stay.
