“A lovely rural experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

Everything was so nice and pleasant at this resort managed by the rural folk. Right from the decor, the ambiance, food, the staff and the location was so perfect. We visited the resort during the Christmas-New Yr holiday and could mange to get booking just for a night at this place (we tried booking in Nov). So the tip is to plan in advance and book earlier. This place remains open only for 6 months in a year between Oct-Mar.

Even though we stayed in tents in peak winters, adequate razais were provided so we hardly felt cold. The bathrooms are located in a separate tent joined to your tent and are very spacious and clean

Authentic Kutchi food is provided and tastes yum. We missed our lunch as we reached late and were treated to piping tea and biscuits instead. Dinner was Bajra Rotla, Roti, 2 Sabjis, Khichdi, Kadhi, pickles and halwa for dessert. The staff were very courteous and polite.

Unique experience!!Wish I could go back.

We stayed one night here after spending a previous night in Dhordo tent city. I must say this place is better option than tent view city.

This place is run by Hodka villagers and UNDP with the Guj Tourism Board.

Staff n service - excellent and they go beyond their ways to make your stay comfortable. Thy r very polite and cooperative.

Rooms - options for either bhunga or tent...both are clean and equiped wit hot water facilities. We stayed in a tent but i suggest better to stay in bhunga during winter.

Food - traditional food and healthy n hygienic...pure veg as thy do not serve non veg n no alcohol.

Its only about 14km approx from the great rann of kutch.

price - bhunga are expensive than tent. Both are affordable approx $65/ per bhunga on full board.

Definately worth a visit ...

Shaam-e-Sarhad is a gem of a hotel, offering you a home stay type of experience with hotel facilities. This resort is managed by the local communities and gives you a small glimpse into the lives of the Kutchis. The staff is very polite - despite having no experience with hospitality - and are extremely helpful. Rooms are in the form of mud houses, also known as bungas, or tents - take your pick. The beauty of this hotel is that it melts away in the rains (remember, the entire resort is made from mud!!) and is rebuilt every year by the locals. We stayed in the mud house and it was very cozy, comfortable and safe. The mud work on the walls was beautifully done! The bathroom was very clean and modern.

I'd recommend this place to anyone considering a visit to Kutch or to the Great White Rann. This place is definitely a better option as compared to the Tents at the Rann. I'll go back here any day.

Room Tip: There are just 3 bungas. Book in advance!!

A star-filled sky, migratory birds, local traditions and Bannni grasslands.....our trip would not have been complete without our stay at this remarkable location. The delicious Gujarati cuisine was served under the large quaint fabric-roofed outdoor dining canope. The bhunda mud house was cozy, warm, safe, private, roomy and we took advantage of our outdoor covered mud porch area for excellent birdwatching. Bathrooms were clean, modern with hot water. Staff were very friendly, helpful and went above and beyond to share vintage village textiles with us. Well worth the trip to this remote part of Kutch.

The resort offers a very unique staying experience with its true to Kutch style mud houses, with excellent detailing and at the same time maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene. While the houses and furnishings are made from mud, the bathrooms are clean and very modern. In the evenings, guests are treated to authentic, live music by local musicians. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is also available at the premises, again keeping true to local kutchi cuisine, but can be a little limiting in its offering. Simple and charming.

This is a beautiful place to stay in the middle of the desert. Very well maintained property (Kudos to the village committee for this) and very courteous staff. I Enjoyed my stay here thoroughly. We were three people staying in the mud houses there. known as Bhunga. The toilets were quite clean which to me was a delight!!
Strongly recommend this place to future goers!

Room Tip: Bhungas are I guess better choice during winters as they turn out to be very cosy

I was thrilled to see what how a desert place can be converted a beautiful place of stay by villagers. In the middle of desert, the villagers of Hodka have taken the task to transform their village life to tourists in the form of Shaam-eSarhad. Though they might not be as courteous as found in big hotels, but they are surely great. One can stay in tents or Bhunga's as they do, eat food prepared as they prepare at their home and most importantly traditional dance and music performance that is organized in the evening as they do for themselves in their villages.

Bookings are like hot cake. They sell out at the pace of tickets for any Indian cricket match. So make sure that you get in touch with them early and book it very well in advance. If you are going to stay there, I advise you not to take any food or water or blankets thinking what might be expected from a place in a desert. The food is more delicious then in any of the grand multi star hotels that one finds in big cities. The traditional dishes for lunch and dinner were brilliant. Local Bajra ki roti and curries …..

The tents are big and luxurious. Being in middle of desert we did not face any issue of water or any other comfort. One can even sleep below clear sky staring at stars if they wish too. This place is very near to White desert. Places that can be covered from here are India Bridge and Kalo Dhongar. One can visit some of the villages if one has time.

A place I will visit again !!
