I'm Chilean. I've been in Puyuhuapi Lodge 3 times already and It's one of the most beautiful places I've visited.
That being said, this was my last experience:
This last time (Jan 2011) I went with my husband and our 9 months old baby, and with my in-laws (visiting from Des Moines, Iowa). We took the "Carretera Austral" package.
Unfortunately, together with us on the trip from the Airport to the Lodge (7+ hours of bus and Catamaran ride) there was a 20+ people group of Chileans that were there -we supposed- on a seminar or something like it. It was clear they weren't paying for their trip (they were from a company or institution). They were very loud and it was hard to hear what the guide was saying, besides the guide was talking mostly in Spanish (which is OK for me but not for my in-laws nor this other couple of people from New York).
The one dinner time when the group was at the Lodge there weren't enough waiters for all of us and one of them was very under qualified (maybe just covering for that one night?). They had a huge confusion with the plates, a vegetarian girl from Germany never got her vegetarian meal, my mother in-law was served a completely burned dish and so on, and we ate desert at the rhythm of the big group's loud singing and table banging. Awful.
This group behaved very poorly and the rest of us were the ones directly affected. It's a shame that such an exclusive place accepts groups like this, which clearly diminish the peace and overall quality and service of the Lodge.
Another detail: The manager's son was 'playing' bartender and he didn't know how to make mojito nor gin tonic. After waiting at least 20 minutes I was served something more like a caipirinha instead a mojito "because we don't have enough mint", he said. The drink was good, but I shouldn't have to pay for something I didn't order and after waiting for so long.
I spoke my concerns to the manager and only got a sorry face. We would have probably been happy with a few free drinks, something pretty easy and low cost for them. But not even that.
Don't get me wrong, this is a wonderful place and was great the 2 other times I was there, but this group almost ruined our whole vacation (a pretty expensive vacation). We felt somewhat ripped off. In my opinion, the Management took poor care of the whole situation, and we weren't the only guests disappointed about it.
There is a somewhat limited amount of activities to do during the day. They could improve in that area.
I would totally recommend it anyway and I would go again myself, but asking first if there is a big group booked on those dates.
A nice little crib was set and waiting for us when we got there, so we didn't need to use our portable crib.
Service was always willing to heat up our baby's meals or refill our Thermos with hot water for the bottles. (Rooms don't have fridge so I had to keep my pumped breastmilk in the bar's fridge. Not big deal.)
Rooms are simple but comfortable. 'Viento Puelche' rooms are in first line to the fjord and have a balcony and an amazing view.
