Just returned from a week in the Dominican Republic, most of it spent at Bahia las Ballenas. Located in a beautiful, somewhat remote part of the island, it's tranquil, uncrowded and welcoming in every way. This time of year you have the heat - at least we did - but you also have the place virtually to yourselves. That doesn't mean, though, that you're ignored. Staff became like friends, catering to every need and offering good company and conversation if you wanted that, or leaving you alone if that's your preference. They model the unhurried pace of this stunning island and its beautiful people. Air-conditioned rooms are not American style as only screens, not window panes, keep the heat and bugs out. But this is a place to go to get away from America. It's tropical, so the night is filled with the sounds of harmless critters who occasionally find their way into the charming cabanas. The chef is first rate. We never ate anywhere else. Best of all, you share the beach and water with few, if any, people. Water is torquoise, warm, and gentle.
By the way, if you go, bring some new or slightly used baseball equipment to the local baseball field in Las Terranas. Hundreds of young men play there dailiy and were grateful for the few new baseballs we brought. The postal system is particularly bad in the country so it's best to deliver them personally. It was a highlight of the trip.
