“Grand Bahia Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

This was our first trip to DR, we chose las Terrenas from the reviews that we had seen. The Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo was one of the best resorts that we have been to. Beautiful grounds, friendly, excellent staff, a lot of different things to do at the resort. We did not bring our child this year but we will be bringing her back with us next time. The food was amazing from the buffet to the restaurants. The rooms were clean, we stayed on the first floor and didnt have any problems with anything coming into the room like some have complained about. We kept our door closed when not needed. I did have a lizard on the tree outside of my patio greet me every morning. I absolutely loved it there and will be back!

Room Tip: Our friends stayed in a different building on the second floor where we were on the first floor, nei...

We just spent a week with another couple at the GBP El Portillo and had an absolute blast! The Grand Bahia was a beautiful hotel, the staff were friendly and helpful, the food was excellent with plenty of variety and don't let any of the snobs tell you otherwise! We had just a standard room it was clean, roomy and very nice. The grounds and beaches were immaculate and the water was beautiful! Unless you're Paris Hilton this was a real treat for regular people like us. Our dive instructor Andy at Scuba-quatic was excellent and extremely patient, thank you very much for making our dive trips great! The only drawback to this hotel were the roaming vendors, we bought a few things but the constant sales pitch got old after the first day.

Las Terrenas is a great little town, yes they're poor but the people are absolutely fantastic! We made several trips into town and felt more welcome than we would visiting anywhere in the U.S. You absolutely MUST visit the Pueblo de los Pescadores and Terry and Rachel at One Love, they were the best hosts anyone could ask for! If you're looking for great local art look for Ronaldo on the beach, he really does have the best prices in town. Muchas Gracias!

Room Tip: There are only a couple of electrical outlets in the rooms and they're not grounded like they ar...

My familly visited last June Gran Bahia El Portillo for one week.
The resort is nice, the ground is well maintained, the bungalows are clean, beautiful and all in one ist's a nice resort. The beach is not like we were expecting , we were used to Cuban's beaches with corals far away from the shore. Sot this was the first our dissapointment. Other people were excited to have the corals so close, but we would love to swim and not enough space for it. We enjoyed the beach bufet which was opened from 12noon and they had enough food to please everybody. The roasted chicken and fries were delicious and the they had a big variety of gorgeous fruits.
The restaurants were good and the Gourmet restaurant was great.
People were nice and pleasant. The only dissapointing thing was that the waiters and waitresses didn't know English language. It was pretty difficult to get the food or drinks from them because theymade lots of mistakes.
An other negative aspect was the driving from the Samana airport : it was a big issue with the distance: they encouraged us to take the short way, 10 minutes less, but we had to pay extra for it. It was unpleasant when we found that it was a bussines between the driver and the resort guide and at the end people got pissed of for his insincerity.

Our 3rd time to the Dominican Republic, 1st time to Samana.

First impression: clean and tranquil.

Room: we had a 'standard' room on the 2nd floor. It was spotless clean. Villa 15 was extremely quiet at night....great for sleeping. FYI, it costs $4 US per day to rent the roof safe (unless you're a VIP member). The AC worked well and so did the ceiling fan.

Grounds: very well kept. Thick lush tropical vegetation.

Food: a large variety of food always available which appealed to the broad base of hotel guests (many from Canada, Russia, Germany, Britain, France and some from the US that we met). A really smart aspect was the staff member who greeted you at the entrance to the buffet and offered a squirt of hand anti-septic. Staff made us feel very welcome and asked us frequently if we wanted refills on our beverages. Both indoor and outdoor dining available at the buffet.

Beach: very calm, very shallow and very clean beach, ideal for non-swimmers, waders and families with toddlers. Some rocky patches which were good for snorkelers. The water was so calm, green flag was showing for 6 days with a yellow flag only on one day. Lots of loungers available and lots of shade too. Security guard at each end of the beach for safety and as a precaution for you not to wander off too far on your own. Snack bar (smaller buffet) conveniently located right on the beach.

Entertainment: we didn't go to any of the shows or evening's entertainment...just preferred to relax on our own.

Weather: what you would expect in a subtropical location in late October. Nice and warm, patches of heavy rain followed by long periods of sunshine.

SUMMARY: A very civilized resort for rest and relaxation. Bring along your favourite books or iPod and settle in for a great week at the beach. We met so many nice guests which really enhanced the vacation. We would definitely return to this resort.

Room Tip: Villa 15 behind the lobby is very quiet and conveniently located to everything.

My husband and I stayed at Gran Bahia El Portillo with another couple and we can truly say that we have discovered paradise. This was our first time visiting the area of Las Terrenas and Samana and can assure you it will not be our last. I visit the Dominican Republic 2 to 3 times a year and have always stayed in La Romana, Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. Shame on us for never exploring this part of the island sooner.

The check in was smooth and front desk staff was very courteous. The rooms were cleaned daily and no need to ask for towels we had a clean pair each day. The food was great, i can probably say it was the best i have ever had in any of the resort we have been to. The grounds are well kept and resort is just the right size.

There is not lots of night life so if u are all about the night life this is not the place for you.

We met a lot of nice people during our stay and we will definitely be back...

The food was good but the same everyday, We didn't get a map when we arrived, so had to find our way around. Asked for a menu to get room service which was suppose to be part of our package and was just told it is suppose to be in your room, and never did we get one, so no room service.
we went to book a al 'carts the day after we arrive right after the briefing and was told they where all full so much for 4 al 'carts, I did do some complaining and got one on the night of our anniversary. We did have a wonderful waiter named Alexander in the restourante-Terraza(buffet) he was great and looked after us very well.
DO NOT BOOK THE VIP LOUNG FOR YOUR TRIP BACK at $25.00 each we received 4 drinks and ham/cheese sandwiches and that was it could have eaten better in the local bar in the airport.
THE BEACH WAS AMAZING was able to do some snorkeling and relaxing.
Try to avoid the lobby or be prepared to be asked to buy time shares they do not take NO for a answer. Met a lot of nice people but will not go back to a Bahia Principe unless it was on sale price.

My husband and I spent a week here for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We booked thru JetBlue Getaways and got an super cheap price so we were not expecting too much. We upgraded for $80 to the VIP package and got to check in in a private room, had personal concierge service and free internet on their computer. I forgot my laptop so this was really handy.
Danielle and Keara in the VIP room sent champagne & fruit to our room, made all of our reservations for the restaurants and generally went above and beyond on everything.
The rooms are spacious and have a jacuzzi in the bathroom and comportable beds and are CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! The beach is white sugary sand with tiki huts and chairs under so you have lots of shade. You can walk both ways on the beach and not see one person OR one piece of trash. Just amazing.
The food was excellent. We ate in all of the restaurants but our VERY FAVORITE was Portofino and the manager CHRISTINO was SUPERB. On our anniversary they sang romantic songs to us, brought us champagne and a wonderful red wine all thru dinner, then brought a beautiful cake for desert. The presentation of the food is gorgeous. Don't miss the saltimbocca or the grouper. And the caprese salad was one of the prettiest things I have ever seen! The service and food in this restaurant does not seem like an all inclusive. It is really top notch.
Sandy at the front desk was great. They gave us a better exchange rate on US to DR money than the bank did - so just change your money there.
We loved it and would definitely go back.

Room Tip: We were on the 3rd floor which is key. Our room was 7306 and was lovely.
