“an oasis in the middle of nowhere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2012

When our trip planner suggested spending several days at the Amanbagh resort in the Arravalli Hills in the middle of our 17 days in India, we were surprised since we had never heard nor read about it but since she was the expert, we went with the suggestion. Thankfully, we listened to her. This resort was amazing, from the pool suite we were upgraded to where monkeys frolicked in the garden, to the delicious meals, the outstanding services and the overall friendliness and desire to please of the staff, nothing was lacking. Since you are in the middle of nowhere, you will be eating all meals at the resort and the choices were excellent as was the preparation. We ate our lunches outside overlooking the pool but it was chilly so we ate breakfast and dinner inside in a beautifully decorated room. We were supposed to have one dinner at a remote outdoor location but chose instead to have it outdoors on a rooftop cupola, heated by portable fire pits, overlooking the entire resort. It was so romantic that we cannot envision this being an alternative not the plan. We took a jeep ride with a guide to a deserted city which was as interesting as Ostia Antica near Rome and another through the nearby town where the locals were more friendly than one could imagine. When we were taking pictures of the children walking home from school, older women wanted to see their pictures and gave us huge smiles. The guide told us that if we sent back copies, the hotel would distribute it to the locals. We had an hour lesson on meditation as well as a great message. Nothing was too much to ask for and when we inquired about an item sold in the shop, they had it opened early on the day we departed.

This was a perfect interlude between the hectic pace of New Delhi and Agra and the forthcoming long drive to Jaipur and onto Udaipur.

Room Tip: The pool suite we had added to the comfort as we were able to sit outside and watch the monkeys.

We spent our honeymoon at Amanbagh in late October. It was simply perfect and we were both completely thrilled by our experience from the villa with its own pool (and monkey community) to the excellent Indian food, local tours on foot and by jeep, and extraordinary service. We travelled to Jaipur for a day and spent a night at the Rambagh Palace, which is supposed to be one of the best hotels in the city, and could not wait to get back to the beauty and peace of Amanbagh. The hotel is set in a an ancient garden and so has many trees which provide shade. It is surrounded by hills so the views from within are beautiful and the staff provide the opportunity to visit local villages and sites that are far from normal tourist experiences in India. Although a place of extreme luxury, the hotel is very much Indian in architecture, cuisine and in details such as toiletries. At least 60% of the staff are locals and there is a sense that the hotel is a part of the community and has brought benefits to the villages. I wouldn't bring younger children here but would recommend for older kids (over 7) as the staff are delightful and would certainly engage kids fully. It is a long drive to the hotel from Delhi airport but both of us very much enjoyed watching the world go by out of the window as we travelled deeper into Rajasthan.

Room Tip: We stayed in a pool villa which was exceptional but we saw the others rooms and thought that they we...

This is a beautiful property but not easy to get to. The suites with the pool are amazing, spacious and even though the bathroom is across the hall, it is luxurious. This resort, located in the heart of a lush garden on the site of a former palace of the Maharaja of Alwar. Built in the style of Mughal Services available: spa, restaurant, pool.

We've just returned from four nights at Amanbagh, which we very much enjoyed. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere, but we felt that gave us a taste of rural Rajasthan as the drive there was very interesting. There are some great trips to really out of the way sites (such as the temple town of Nankeeth and Bhangarth, both fascinating and tourist-free) and we enjoyed a drive around the local villages and a visit with locals for chai (which does bring the luxury enjoyed at Amanbargh into sharp contrast). The guide was excellent and knowledgeable.

The resort is beautiful and the grounds and buildings immaculately kept. We were in a pool villa room which was fantastic - spacious and luxurious and we loved having our own private pool and backyard looking onto jungle (and an early evening monkey parade!). There are some comments on Tripadvisor about road noise but it didn't bother us - we didn't hear it in the room and otherwise it was nice being reminded from time to time that we were in colourful rural India!

The service was wonderful and we were made to feel part of the Amanbargh family with a welcome song and all the staff waving us off on departure! We had a number of meals in lovely locations which were very special, on the roof of the hotel and in the jungle within the hotel grounds. We will never forget the lovely surprise we received one evening on returning from a trip - it was our first anniversary, and the staff greeted us at our villa with a blessing and feet washing, and candles and curtains were set up to create a special outdoor dining area with a lovely private meal.

The food was excellent (neccessary, as there is no opportunity to leave the resort to eat) although our only comment would be that for the prices charged, breakfast and basic mini-bar drinks should be included (especially as there is no alternative).

The end of September was a great time to visit; the resort was very quiet and the weather was good.

All in all this was a special place, and a real treat.
