“Wow, what a place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2009

On Jan 8th, my wife and I happened upon this location, without
reservations, we were given Casita Ha. Both of us fell in love with
the place. Quiet, clean, beautiful views, Soliman Bay, was
just a few of the things that were outstanding. Javier and Victoria
were excellent hosts, even did our laundry for us. Without a doubt
one of the most relaxing places I have visited. No crowds,
No Tourists, just the dogs(two) and us. Great pool, super
snorkling in the bay, romantic walks on the beach, and the
sounds of surf in the distance create life long memories.
I wish I had found this place before we spent 5 days in Cancun's
tourist mecca. Tulum is the closest town-10 minutes away,
with several good spots to eat. We will return!

My girlfriend and I were fortunate enough to receive a tip from friends about Nah Uxibal. Little did we know just how grateful we would be.

We are from Colorado and had never been to Mexico before. Our desire was to really experience a foreign environment and culture. For our ten day trip, Tulum turned out to be a fantastic place to do just that. And Nah Uxibal was the perfect place to stay.

It's location is ideal - about halfway between Tulum and Akumal. It is less than a ten minute easy drive to each. It is an incredibly simple, less than two hour drive, from the Cancun airport. Many fascinating places and activities are within 10 to 45 minutes. This was great for us because, while we loved relaxing on the beach, we are very active individuals.

The setting swept us off our feet instantly. Access from the main highway is easy (1 km of smooth road), but just far and less traveled enough to have a truly remote feel. The grounds are beautifully and meticulously landscaped. The facilities are brilliantly integrated into the tropical lushness and situated perfectly on the beach. The whole place has a lavishly tropical, authentically Yucatecan look and feel.

Soliman Bay is the most beautiful bay we saw during all our explorations. It is only partly and modestly developed. It is the most defined bay we saw. However, Nah Uxibal’s location near the center still has the open ocean-side feel. The reef that extends across the mouth of the bay protects the beach and provides incredible snorkeling. The beaches farther south have somewhat more pristine sand, but they lack the richness of exotic aquatic, aviary and terrestrial wildlife. Morning snorkeling. Midday paddling. Sunset walks. Wow.

We were extremely happy with the studio. It feels spacious, yet cozy. It has all the modern conveniences we are accustomed to (except for a microwave and TV – which we didn’t miss a bit!) It has a nice private patio as well as direct access to the common sitting area that is ideal for breakfasts. The tile, woodwork and décor are beautiful. The sea breeze and sounds of exotic wildlife through the windows were delicious.

We had the good fortune of a vacancy in a beach casita during our last three nights. We were quite content in the studio but Jeanette insisted that we would enjoy the Casa. The closer proximity to the beach, vaulted Palapa roof and open ceiling (to the sky!) shower were really nice.

Our explorations did not reveal any other places that even came close to Nah Uxibal’s mix of charm and function. The Tulum beach area was nice, but the lack of electricity and cell service would have lost its luster within a couple days. Our feelings of safety and security were never in question at Nah Uxibal. And the prices are very reasonable compared with every other place we saw. The low season studio prices are a downright bargain! Unless you have either a much more rustic or a modern, luxury resort experience in mind, I challenge you to find anything that matches Nah Uxibal anywhere on the Riviera Maya.

All that aside, we enjoyed the inhabitants at Nah Uxibal as much (or more) than anything about our experience there. We were very lucky to be there at the same time as owners Jeanette and Skip. They are a truly delightful and caring couple and were a great complement to the regular staff. The manager, Rosa, is sweet and very helpful. She offers a plethora of local knowledge and good advice on dining and activities. Javier and Victoria are absolute gems – always quick with a genuinely warm smile and a generously helping hand. Victoria cooked up a magnificent dinner in our studio. Lucia is charming and provided wonderful massages right there on the beach.

And then, of course, there are those heart-stealing canines Lady and Donkey. These two little angels made it SO much easier to be away from our own four-leggeds. They are at the same time omnipresent and never in the way. And they are ridiculously cute. It was a bit painful to say goodbye to them after just ten days.

We were truly blessed to have had our stay at Nah Uxibal. We are immensely grateful. We would love to return. We wish all the best for its inhabitants as well as its visitors.

We stayed in Casita Ik for ten days in April, and while we agree with much of the commentary, feel it necessary to warn potential guests of a few things.
The good: beautiful water and bay, never crowded, lush surroundings for that area.
The bad: cawing, squawking birds that started in about 5 a.m. and could raise the dead; and no hot water, even in the shower - it was pretty cold!
The ugly: the wonderful dogs all the other reviewers are so fond of. They barked all night every night! We finally spoke to the caretaker, and noticed minimal improvement. Another couple became so desperate for a good night's sleep that they let the dogs into their room to quiet them. The dogs are sweet and friendly, and no problem during the day, but they barked at everything all night long. I was awakened by them many times even while wearing earplugs. Since we chose Nah Uxibal for peace and relaxation, the birds and the dogs really ruined it for us, and we will not return.

We are sorry that this guests did not enjoy their stay with us at Nah Uxibal. We as owners and our wonderful caretakers make every attempt to ensure a pleasurable stay and I would like to address a few things mentioned in this review.
It is true that the native birds are noisy in the morning. Most people find that the birds and the sounds they make are part of the charm of Nah Uxibal, and get used to it in a day or so. We have never had any other complaints about the natural environment of Nah Uxibal. On the contrary, that is why most of our guest come, to enjoy the natural beauty (which we are very lucky to have) of a naturally beautiful environment.
Our dogs do bark at night when there is a reason. It is important that they do this to protect the guests property and our home. They are doing their jobs and are very good and knowing what/who is a threat and what or what isn't, in other words they do not bark unnecessarily. It is unfortunate that this guest may have been here at a time when there was more night activity for whatever reason. The dogs have done a great job of preventing break-in's at Nah Uxibal, which unfortunately has not been the case at some other homes on the bay.
Lastly, there is ALWAYS hot water in all of our units, and if for some reason there is not simply telling Javier would quickly take care of the problem. He is very attentive and wants to make our guests as comfortable as possible, but he can not do so if he is not told that something needs his attention. He is there to help and does a great job and we ask all of our guests to communicate their needs to him or Victoria, so they can be met.
We hope this clarifies some of the things stated in this review, and we appreciate the opportunity to write it.
Happy Travels!

Nah Uxibal in Soliman Bay is a "slice of heaven" The accommodations were perfect. The design of the units were created by an award winning architect and it shows! You can be in awe of the craftsmanship for days - OR - be in awe of the location on the bay. 25 steps away from the water, snorkeling, kayaking and more. The beautiful waters are pristine and sea abound. YES, we swam with rays, schools of fish and even saw a barracuda! We had Lucia the massage therapist provide amazing bodywork, we had Victoria cook for us and the trip was the simply the best! Thank you ~ see you next year at Nah Uxibal!

My husband and I have always been looking for our perfect vacation and we found it here. We stayed in a casita on the beach. It was awesome. The waves, the breeze and the beautiful sunrises were unreal. We loved the solitude Soliman Bay offered. We would make a short run to Tulum every day for fresh fish and tortillas at the market. We'd then come back and grill the fish and lay on the beach. At night we would scope out a local restaurant. Javier and Victoria took care of us and we enjoyed every minute. My husband told me today that he still thinks of our time there every day. Some of our favorite things include: snorkeling (first time), local restaurants, the ruins, walks on the beach in the moring with the dogs, the shower outside and being able to walk around in our swimming suits (we're 40 somethings) without the crowds. We were almost alone on the beach or close to it. Nah Uxibal is a paradise that we are going back to. It was a bargain at that price. We had a terrific time and would encourage others to try it. (We used a nearby Internet cafe to call and keep track of our kids in the US.)

We had the pleasure of staying at Nah Uxibal from March 29th to April 5th and have been home just a week.....it was very hard to leave and even harder to adjust to the real world again. Nah Uxibal consists of a main house, 2 studios under the main house and 2 casitas on the beach.....It is located on Soliman Bay and was the perfect getaway for my husband, myself, our son, daughter-in-law, 2.5 year old grandaughter, daughter and son-in-law. We rented the main house and one of the studios which was perfect for us.....there was another couple with a toddler in one of the casitas so the kids had fun playing on the beach and they were very safe and protected from the sun by a large palapa......the beach is beautiful, raked every day by Javier and quite isolated; not a lot of tourists; shells and coral abound as you walk down the beach in either direction. The surf is calm and there is a coral reef just off shore where the snorkeling is wonderful......I would recommend bringing surf shoes to make traversing a small area of seagrass easier, but once you get past the seagrass it is clear and beautiful aqua water, the temperature of a bathtub......you'll never want to get out.
We had a wonderful Mexican meal cooked by Victoria, one of the caretakers, and it was truly the best food we had in Mexico. We ate some meals in and went out some nights.....the restaurants are mostly in Tulum or Akumal, but we had a wonderful meal at a little shack on our beach and ate one meal at Oscar y Lalo's at the end of the road.
Nah Uxibal is not for partyers or people who need a lot of nightlife, but if your idea of nightlife is looking at stars, drinking homemade margaritas, and enjoying your loved ones, this is the place for you.
We will definitely go back.

Unfortunately, we can not give this place the glowing review so many others before us have.
However, in the end, it's all relative to what you want on your vacation. For the price we paid per night I see no reason we had no access to a telephone. I left a 15 year old at home and for my peace of mind, I would like to know I could be reached at any time on my vacation.
My partner, left behid a sick father and she also wanted to be able to be reached by telephone.
Turtle grass. The beach is on a tranquill bay chock full of rays, turtles, amazing fish and while it is extraordinarily beautiful, it is extremely grassy.
Since I am always convinced I will step on a sting rays tail and die. I have to see where I am placing my foot. I also always have eyes on the back of my head for large fins in water. I am terrified of barracudas -so know this-and you will see what I mean when I say, for some, yes, this is paradise.
For us, it was alot of long rides into Tulum, standing outside of Super San Francisco supermarket using a payphone, having paid almost $200.00 per night.
Sorry, I needed more of a break.
This said, this is a beautiful home, great folks who run it, wonderful bay, great bed, really really super, but, for us, we found it less than ideal.

  • Liked — The two dogs, Donkey and Lady and the caretakers Javier and Victoria.
  • Disliked — Lack of a raked beach, no phone, and a bit too out of the way from restaraunts. No village.

We are so sorry to hear that this guest did not enjoy their stay with us.
Just to clarify a few things:
We do provide the phone number of our manager to all of our guests, and any of our guests would be contacted immediately if an emergency call is received for them. We do realize that there needs to be a way to contact our guests for emergency reasons, and this method has always worked well. Also, most of our guests bring their own cell phones, as the reception on the bay has improved greatly with the new antenna nearby.
The bay is teaming with life indeed, which is why it is so popular for snorkeling. In the 13 years we have owned there I have never heard of anyone hurt by the sea life in Soliman Bay, the problem is actually the opposite, that if we are not careful the delicate and beautiful balance of the sea life is destroyed by us humans.
