“How Sad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

This was once the jewel on the Sunshine Coast but now it's a testament to what an oversized ego can do to a business.I stayed here 6 years ago with the family and we had a great time when it was a Hyatt hotel. This time I stayed here with a colleague on a business trip and couldn't believe it was the same resort. Arrived at 6:45pm to check in and not a single sole was at reception....no guests or staff so we had to use the telephone to call someone to come and check us in. After check in we were told to take our bags and wait outside at the golf buggy parked out front, and sure enough the same person that checked us in drove us to our rooms. Room was fine, nothing to complain about, the bed was comfortable and was a good size. For dinner we had made a reservation at Ned Kelly's restaurant in Village Square to meet another colleague and once there the only two people inside the place were paying for their meal and leaving. So we had the place to ourselves, and the staff member who seated us also served us drinks, took our order, cleared the plates, and did just about everything else but cook the food. I thought the meals were good but not great. I had the sirloin steak which according to the menu was cooked "medium rare" but unfortunately mine came out medium - well. My two friends both had the Irish stew and did not complain. The next morning I decided to take a walk around the grounds before breakfast to see some of the changes that had been made since my last visit. The most notable thing was the dinosaurs around the resort and the car museum. I was particularly interested in the condition of the golf course and to my surprise not one person was on the course. We went to the same restaurant for breakfast, and much to our surprise there were 3 other guests at another table, and the only people we had seen in the 24 hours we were there. I'm not quite sure what to make of this place, I had been told that it was a ghost town and that's indeed what we found. I feel sorry for the staff as they all tried hard to please but surely the writing is on the wall and it's only a matter of time before it either gets sold or closes which would be a very say day for this lovely part of Australia. I won't be rushing back here but for some the silence might indeed be golden.

Arrived into wonderful weather coming from Melbourne, staff could not be more helpful and polite. Resort is quite which was a us, we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Golf course is one of the best I have played on then to be able to take a cart directly to bye beach was quite amazing

Attended a function at the conference centre in July. When looking for accommodation I chose not to stay here after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor, but chose to stay at Coolum beach, just a short 5 minute drive away. The Conference centre was a great venue - possibly up to 500 people there. It was rather a long hike from the car park, and not well marked. A whole bunch of people got lost leaving the first night, we followed some other people, who were actually staying at the resort, and therefore not going to the carpark. The paths could be better signposted, and better lighting at night. That would have to be my only gripe. Went walking around the resort during breaks and found it to be well maintained, the gardens were lovely(well as lovely as they can be in Winter) The people I spoke to who were staying at the resort did not have any real complaints about the place. I would say it is a good place for a function, as guests can choose to stay there or to travel.

We felt like we had stepped into a weird movie. It was eerily quiet and seemed abandoned. Gardens were a mess and infrastructure old and tired. The ever present Palmer propaganda was subconsciously disturbing.Prices were outrageous and definately did not reflect the hotel experience we thought we were going to get. Skeleton staff were friendly.Kids loved the dinosaur park.We expected an Australian experience in Ned Kelly restaurant but there was nothing except a portrait of Ned Kelly on the menu in the whole restaurant that themed the room. But there was a picture of the Titanic...and photos of Clive of course!

This resort was so vital to the well being of Coolum and other nearby businesses and it is terrible to see such a mere reflection of its past glories. Although most reviewers comment on how tired it is looking, what is worse is that you can wander around the grounds with barely a person in sight.
I wanted to return to the Captains Table for lunch but on asking , was told it no longer operates and is only used for functions.

After reading bad reviews I decided to take my 3 yo for a look anyway and was quite taken by the park, I thought it was quite amazing and different. Maybe on the pricey side but still very enjoyable and something different :)
