I've been here twice now when on holiday in Arrowtown. As a drop in for coffee place, it was lovely. Great decor and love the roaring fire in the rear of the building by the wine bar. Nice to have two different seating areas, the bustling cafe in front and the relaxed wine bar/lounge in the back, with a dry goods deli on the side of exotic and interesting-looking finds (although somewhat pricey).
For lunch we came as a group comprising of 3 generations of our family. The menu is interesting and somewhat varied, but does not cater for young children at all. Disappointing when travelling with your family, the only option of interest to our two children was the bread! Described as mediterranean, the options were perhaps a bit confused to our minds. There was a range of gourmet sandwiches/ rolls on offer, with examples of these displayed in their cabinet. When it came to ordering ours, we were told there was no longer two of the options, although they were still displayed in their cabinet. We were told those in the cabinet had been there "all day and were not fit for consumption" - which was disappointing to hear.
Another area for improvement we thought could be to separate the ordering from the paying, which currently have to be done through one computer at the counter. Menus are on the tables and on a blackboard but you are expected to go up to the counter with all your tables orders (although many around us were confused about this aspect). In the same queue were a growing number of people who wanted to pay, which meant for lengthy waiting, particularly when an issue cropped up with a bill ahead of us. We thought perhaps table service might remove this problem, and there didn't seem to be a shortage of wait staff who could perform this. It would be nicer than having to remove yourself from your fellow diners to go wait in a queue to order, and then again when ready to pay.
I wish them well, and do hope they can iron out a few issues. It is great to have another attractive and inviting cafe in the Arrowtown environs, and given it's name I'm sure it will draw the tourists inside. A more slick operation it needs to become. We will return for another trial in the months to come.
