This place offers something really different. We stayed here in November last year and were fortunate enough to get the two new wing rooms. I would suggest that it's much more worthwhile staying in these rooms if you can, as they are modern and spacious, whereas the old wing is more like an old dormitory. The food was great and the staff really helpful. Ask about the beer baron on the other side of the valley if you need some beverages. Go for a walk with the dogs around the tea plantations. If you're up for it, you can also walk back from World's End (we did this, but got a tuk-tuk up there though to be there early before the fog).

The other reviews are testament to its brilliant location so I won't write more about that.

Highly recommended

Room Tip: Get one of the new wing rooms

My girlfriend and I stayed at Eco Lodge for one week in September and it was the highlight of our one-month stay in Sri Lanka. The surroundings were lush and gorgeous. The view from our room (the new upper deck) was breathtaking; it was more spectacular than the view from Horton Plains. We could see all the way down the coast to the lighthouse at Dondra. The host, Mr. Perera, and the chef, Mr. Karu, really made an effort to make us feel right at home. The food was amazing and plentiful -- the best coconut roti ever! And they were very generous with the date chutney (thank you for letting me finish all the date chutney)! ;)

Mr. Perera was extremely helpful with recommendations on treks, directions and any other travel inquiries we had. He was even kind enough to give us lifts when we were all heading in the same direction, and also when we were late catching a train.

Mr. Karu had guided us on a couple of treks, and even though we ended up caught in a cold rain, he maintained his jovial demeanour throughout. He was a really great guy.

The location is indeed an adventure to reach. The road is unpaved, narrow and steep. That said, just hold on tight and enjoy the ride! The tuktuk drivers are very skilled and know exactly how to navigate the road. Trust them and just take in the spectacular view!!

There are two dogs that live on the property; the one named Brownie is the quietest and coolest dog ever. My girlfriend is not even a dog lover, but Brownie sure changed her mind.

Overall, it's a fabulous place to trek, relax, and connect with nature. Thank you Mr. Perera and Mr. Karu for taking such great care of us. We hope to return again one day. All the best!

Room Tip: New upper deck. Great privacy and fabulous views!

Decided to opt for this from TripAdvisor review. Worth every penny! Situated in a tea estate, this place offers an amazing experience to say the least. All types of adjectives fall short to describe the views from here! I'm happy that we chose this place to base camp for Horton plains. Since its closer to Horton plains than Nuwara eliya, you save time in travelling and can reach there as early as possible to get a chance to see World's end at its finest, because clouds start forming at around 10 am and obscure the views of World's end. This place is owned by Mr Eomal Perera who is very prompt in replying to your email and will answer all your querries in a polite and patient manner; and managed by Francis uncle and his colleague who are very helpful to say the least. I suggest you go for the half board option, as Francis uncle is a great cook. Mr Perera arranges your transport to the lodge and Horton plains in a hassle free manner. 5 stars for the place, 5 for Mr Perera and 5 for Francis uncle :-)

The location was gorgeous - you can sit in the garden & stare at the surrounding mountains for hours. The log cabin looking rooms in the new wing has all the modern amenities & we woke up to see the sun peering through the clouds (the doors are glass). Food too was great - wonderfully sweet caretakers as well. One of the most beautiful holidays I had with our family. We're definitely coming back again.

Room Tip: Choose rooms from the new wing.

It was very difficult to rate the Hill Safari Lodge. Within one hour of our arrival, we were ready to leave after one day, but ended up staying through the entire three nights of our reservation as the place slowly grew on us. They key to Hill Safari is to arrive with the right set of expectations, and if you have them, then you will surely have a great stay. At the end of our stay, I didn’t want to leave!

Plusses:
======
• Beautiful views around the lodge, especially in the tea plantation.

• The staff is friendly and helpful. They have limited English skills, but they clearly mean well, and they view your happiness as priority #1. However, they are former tea plantation workers, and none are trained service staff.

• The food (breakfast and dinner) was very good.

• We made reservations in advance, and the price we were charged at the end of our stay was exactly what was quoted. This should be normal, but we had heard all sorts of horror stories about Sri Lankan hotels and all sorts of fees and charges, but this place cost what it said it cost.

• Their foosball table was a nice distraction in the evening.

• They gave excellent advice on treks around the lodge with quite clear directions and time frames.

• Because we stayed three nights, they included driver’s accommodation.

Okay:
====
• The rooms are okay …. We didn’t expect them to be high-end, and they are really well suited for the trekking / back-packing crowd. The two new rooms have very nice views, and are more modern, but still quite basic. Their standard rooms are very basic, but adequate. We stayed in both types of rooms, and to me the biggest difference was the newer rooms have more comfortable beds, and a little more water pressure. The staff forgot to give us towels until asked for, and some of the sheets were not perfectly clean.

Minuses:
======
• The road to get to Hill Safari is narrow, poor condition, and quite frankly, dangerous. It is easily affected by rain, and the drop is steep and deadly. This is really something the lodge needs to address. Other reviewers have mentioned this, but it is worth repeating – if the owners do not address this issue, we will be reading about a death at Hill Safari in the future.

• I asked when I made my reservation about a restaurant, and was told they were able to serve food (for lunch, which wasn’t included in the price). When we arrived, I asked again, and they said they have “restaurant facilities”. When asked for a menu, the truth then comes out … what they do is offer you the things they are able to make, then go into town to buy the ingredients and make it. There is nothing near this place, so that process is a 2+ hour ordeal. As has been said by other reviewers, you feel like you are imposing or eating from the staff’s private food.

• There is no cell coverage in Hill Safari whatsoever, even using Sri Lankan Mobitel (the country’s best provider).

Things to keep in mind:
==================
• We visited in December/January, and nights here are COLD. We rented a heater from them for our two rooms (very reasonable cost), but even that wasn’t warm enough. Pack for very cold weather. Fortunately, they provided hot tea whenever we requested, to help us warm up.

• Consider bringing food with you for lunch and snacks, or paying for full board.

We enjoyed our stay very much. It is already on the way to worlds end, but you need to pay a taxi to get there and another taxi to the entrance of worlds end. If you come to that place because of worlds end, the location is not perfect. The service and the food were very nice, and there are different room qualities. I can definately recommand this place. Price-Value was absolutely ok!

Was able to get the top room on the new wing on our way to worlds end , Awesome view, the room facilities were also great , The hot water was not working for sometime that didnt bother us as the view from the room was breathtaking

They could increase on the quality of the food, Provided the fact that this one of the two lodges , The food was good but the variety was not good enough. THe breakfast was not enough as we were preparing for a long hike. I would like to thank karunadasa for the hospitality offered.
All in all a wonderful experience and would definitely go there again

BTW, take care when going on the pathway to the resort. Our small car just fit the width of the road and it was somewhat a terrifying experience as the road was not visible at all with the mist and the the cliff which was like 2 feet away from the car !!!!
