Owner description: A JOURNEY THROUGH KAKADU's WETLANDSYellow Water Billabong, Kakadu's most famous wetland, is located at the end of Jim Jim Creek, a tributary of the South Alligator River. The river system, which is the largest in Kakadu, contains extensive wetlands that include river channels, floodplains and backwater swamps.WILDLIFEAbout one third of Australia's bird species are represented in Kakadu National Park, with at least 60 species found in the wetlands. Whistling Ducks and Magpie Geese are the most abundant. Our guides run a competition between themselves on who can find "the big five" on one cruise - all five species of kingfisher that can be found in Kakadu. One species is only 2 cm tall. There are plenty of crocodiles in their natural habitat, and buffalo on the floodplains. A hugeJabiru's nest is nearby, and depending on the season, Brolgas can be found dancing. THE EXPERIENCEYellow Water Cruises, winner of the 2011 and 2009 NT Brolga Tourism Award for Major Tourist Attraction operates exclusively on Yellow Water Billabong. It operates year round and provides up to six cruises a day of 90 or 120 minute duration. The sunrise and sunset cruise are very popular and advance bookings are recommended. Often people undertake more than one cruise to see the changes in the wildlife at different times of the day. More should experience a cruise in different seasons. We can never guarantee what will happen on a cruise, but every time is a unique experience. OUR GUIDESAll of our experienced guides are ticketed with the Kakadu Knowledge and are often supported by our Indigenous Employment Program trainees that give fascinating insights into how the Bininj people use the flora and fauna to support their way of life. They are inducted with a 12 week training program. Some guides have been with us for over 8 years. YELLOW WATER FISHINGYellow Water Fishing provides an opportunity to catch the famous barramundi on Kakadu's most famous billabong. These tours are perfect for families or the keen angler and last for 2-3 hours depending on the time of day. Groups of up to 4 people only. Bookings essential. Yellow Water Cruises are the best way to experience the wetlands of Kakadu and it will be an experience remembered for a lifetime.

“Glad we did this cruise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2012

We visited Kakadu in late May and did the Yellow Water Cruise on 30/5/12. By this stage we had already done the 'Spectacular Jumping Crocodiles' tour at Alligator River (on the way to Kakadu from Darwin) as well as the Guluyambi Boat Tour at Ubirr. We almost didn't bother to do the Yellow Water Cruise as we figured we had done enough boat cruises and it would probably be much the same as the others. We are so glad we ended up doing the cruise.

The Yellow Waters was a beautiful wetland area and quite different from what we had seen at Ubirr. One of the main differences was that there was such a great variety of birdlife at Yellow Waters which we had not seen at all on the Guluyambi tour. Our guide Isaac was very knowledgeable about the birds and other wildlife. He had all sorts of interesting stuff to tell us, including the aboriginal lore he had picked up from his housemate who was one of the local aboriginal people.

We even got to see a fight between two male crocs (over turf or mates I guess), which apparently is a rare event that we were very lucky to witness! I'd definitely recommend doing this cruise while visiting Kakadu National Park.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of Yellow Water Cruises.

We are very proud of all our Tour guides and I will share your feedback with Issac. All our guides go through extensive training and certification, including a session with our Traditional Owners, to ensure they deliver a fantastic experience.

A Yellow Water Cruise is indeed a magical experience and unlike any other cruise or tour inside or outside the world heritage listed Kakadu National Park.

We have also just introduced our Night Tour on Yellow Water, "The Algohgarrng Experience". Uniquely, the cruise is conducted on the billabong with only stars to light the way. Visitors learn about the role of celestial bodies in significant life events, including burial rites, and how aborigines used the sky to forewarn them of the change in seasons and to predict tides. There’s no artificial light on the tour, so you can hear barramundi bust the surface to ambush prey or crocodiles on the hunt, but you won’t be able to see them!

Once again thank you for your valuable feedback and hope to see you back to try the Algohgarrng Experience.

Kind regards,

David Bowen

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

This is a great way to explore the wetlands on an organized boat trip with experienced commentary. We chose the 4.30pm 2 hour cruise to include the sunset which occurs at 6.30pm, as advised. A good choice. We saw crocodiles, birds and beautiful trees and water lillies in flower, especially enjoyed seeing the pink lotus water Lilly. We will be back!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of Yellow Water Cruises.

We were pleased to hear that you enjoyed your sunset cruise. Being on the water at that time of the day is a truly magical experience. I was on yesterday's sunset cruise and after 3 years in Kakadu I am still in awe of the beauty that is Yellow Water.

Next time you are in Kakadu please try our new Yellow Water Fishing Tour, we are getting quite a few bites out there!

Once again thank you once again for your valuable feedback.

“Do not miss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

You cannot visit Kakadu without doing this cruise. We went on the dawn one and the sunrise, the birdlife, the crocodiles....all in their natural habitats. I will never forget this most memorable experience.

Love the title of your comment "do not miss". I think this perfectly describes the Yellow Water experience.

We were pleased to hear that you enjoyed your sunset and sunrise cruises. In fact both these cruises are our most popular on Yellow Water. The most beautiful sunsets and sunrises are seen over Yellow Water, the colours are simply awesome.

Did you visit Warradjan Cultural Centre while you were in Kakadu. The centre provides a wealth of information regarding the local people, culture and history of this area. A "do not miss" place also!

Once again thank you once again for your valuable feedback.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2012

We took a sunset trip, saw several crocodiles at very close range, plenty of bird life, and wonderful trees and plants, Such a beautiful area! For me the highlight was our guide asking everyone on board to be quiet so we could drift around in silence apart from some exotic noises from mother nature. And then the sunset was just BEAUTIFUL!
