We just came back from a week at Riu Palace in Costa Rica and it was the absolute worst trip we have ever had. This hotel is so far from a 5 star it's a joke. We booked a family suite expecting 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a living area with pull out sofa. When advertised it said the room sleeps 5. However when we got to our room we were so disappointed to find no living area and no pull out couch. Further more, only one bathroom had a shower and the other had a bath tub. This defeated our purpose of booking a family suite as we wanted 2 showers and a sitting area for our kids to watch tv. We have 2 young children and unfortunately most of the tv stations were only in Spanish with the exception of CNN. My kids were totally bored in the room which really sucks at the end of the day when everyone wants to relax. I went to open the closet door in one of the bedrooms and the door literally fell on top of me. Thankfully it was me and not one of my kids opening the door. I called immediately to the front desk and they sent me a maintenance guy who did not speak or understand a word of English. I found this extremely frustrating!!! It was very hard to communicate with the staff at the hotel as most of them only spoke a small amount of English.
The pools were filthy and not cleaned daily as my kids found food at the bottom of the pool one day when swimming. As well sand was always lining the bottom of the pools. My son knocked over his strawberry daiquiri drink in the pool one afternoon and the next day we saw it still floating in the water.....totally gross. For a hotel being open only 6 weeks, I would expect the pools to be a lot cleaner. There was very little music playing by the pool during the day. Only between the hours of 10 am & 12pm and then again at 3pm when they started the afternoon activities. There was not much for young kids to do during the day which is disappointing. We found the days to be rather boring.
The food was nothing to brag about. The same food was served every day at the buffet. However the New Year's Eve dinner was amazing. Best meal of the week by far. The a la carte restaurants were not impressive with the exception of the Japanese restaurant Tokio. However waiting to make a reservation was very frustrating as you had to wait every morning to make the reservation. There was only 2 seatings so it filled quickly. You had to line up by 7:30 am or wait over an hour in a line up. Total waste of time.
To top it off, there was a sewage problem towards the end of our trip which made being in our rooms unbearable. The smell in the washrooms was disgusting and every time you went to turn on the water or flush the toilet, the fowl odour would be there. It made us want to throw up!!! When I complained about this I was told that both of the Riu Hotels were experiencing this problem. That is unacceptable if you ask me for a 5 star hotel.
So needless to say, this was our first and last time staying at the Riu Palace in Costa Rica.
