Just got back from a week vacation at the Riu Guanacaste first week of August. The weather was perfect and the beach water warm. We had only two days of brief rain in the afternoons. The hotel was beautiful and a good value for an all inclusive. We realized this when we went into towns like COcO beach and Flamingo beach and ordered food. At first food appears reasonably priced. However, CR charges a 40% service fee on all meals everywhere you go including the airport. We paid $98 for three pieces of pizza, a sandwich and three sodas at the airport. All inclusive is the way to go. The beach at the hotel was great. It is a black beach which is really neat. You can walk about 400 yards up the beach and hit a white sand beach covered in beautiful coral. Take some snorkels here as this is where you can see fish. On the way to the white sand beach you will see a painted sign for the Monkey Bar. GO THERE! It is really an amazing local little bar, VERY SAFE with lots of monkeys around. Ask for Marvin, Sergio or Alex. They run ALEXONTHEBEACH.com and will hook you up with the most amazing adventure tours you will never forget for much cheaper than the hotel. We booked the #4 adventure and spent the whole day with a private tour guide in the rain forest, doing zip lining, horseback riding, mud baths and viewing volcanos. We will never forget it! Thank you Alex! We also did a 5 hour ATV tour and saw sloths and the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Thank you Maurio. We ended up spending most of our time hanging with locals and others from the hotel at the Monkey bar. Cheap beers and they make fresh fish for you if you catch anything for cheap. We had lobster one day and sea bass another day for lunch. It was very cheap even with the service fees. Great Place.
Overall the hotel was great. Here are the things we didn't enjoy. No free wifi in the hotel rooms. You do get 90 min a day of free wifi in the lobby but it is very slow. The food was above average but we could never make a reservation for the steak house not matter how early we went. Also we booked with apple vacations. Great flight direct flight with frontier from CO. We called ahead and asked both Apple and frontier about our baggages fees. They said two bags fly for free international. When we ck'd in at Denver no charges. However, checking in with Frontier in Costa Rica they charged for a second bag and told us it wasn't noted all bags fly for fee. Just beware.
Overall an unforgettable vacation. The Costa Rican people are so friendly and the county is beautiful. We never felt unsafe and we traveled by our own personal car everywhere. Have fun. Pura Vida!
