“A Sunday lunch to beat most!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

My husband and I came across this wonderful country inn by recommendation of our friends and we are so glad we strayed off our path to Devon to give it a go!
We were greeted by friendly, smiling, young staff who told us not having a reservation was no trouble, they would find space for us even when the pub was bustling with people. They offered us a drink the moment we arrived at the bar... And what an array! My husband is an ale enthusiast and he was spoilt for choice! He was recommended 'Butcombe bitter' and thoroughly enjoyed it.
As it was a Sunday, we both opted for the roast lamb (recommended by a young chef who was picking fresh herbs right next to our table) and could not be happier with our choice. I have been disappointed with pub Sunday lunches a lot recently, almost giving up finding one worth the money, but this was not only delicious but reasonably priced!!
The meat was succulent and full of flavour, hints of garlic and rosemary coming through the unctuous, thick, perfect gravy. The potatoes were crispy and the yorkshires tender. All in all, a perfect roast lunch!
We followed that up with a delicious portion of sticky toffee pudding which looked beautiful on the plate.
All in all, we had a brilliant lunch and will definitely be coming back. Well done!

“Excellent Sunday Lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

Set in a beautiful Somerset village with a lovely garden, enclosed play area for children and additional courtyard.
The menu was not huge however the food was delicious, we both had the mushroom and blue cheese soup to start, and to be honest this would really have been enough, however we were out for Sunday lunch so had to try the slow roast belly pork!! It was great.
The pub was very busy, the staff were friendly. I'd certainly visit again.
I thought the idea of trading your home grown produce for a drink at the bar was a novel idea.

“What went wrong!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

The menu here has always been limited but the food reasonable. Its a pretty pub in a nice hamlet and the staff are pleasant enough. Unfortunately there was a wedding on, so I guess the kitchen/staff were focused on that. The meal we had was quite unacceptable. Three of us had fish and chips because it was the only proper hot meal on the menu. The fish was dry and over fried as the batter was dark (old oil?), the chips uninteresting and no vegetables available, just salad garnish. Our friend had over cooked gammon, egg that looked pre prepared and colourless soggy chips (it came out so quickly after ordering that we thought it was a cancelled order). He sent it back and it returned with freshly cooked eggs and everything much as before. We appreciate a kitchen can be under pressure during busy periods, but it was clear the menu had been tailored to allow for the kitchen to prepare the wedding food. There was not much that could have gone wrong with this menu - but it all did! Wont return.

Room Tip: Find out if they are catering for an event or you may find your food compromised.

“pub grub slightly overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

This delighfully situated pub used to serve restaurant standard food, but we had not visited for a few years and it certainly the three horseshoes does not now. Everything seemed to come with chips and so we ordered a vegetarian tart with new potatoes and salad. It cost £13 and so we were expecting something special. What we got was rather perfunctory and disappointing. The slice of tart was tasty enough, but it only came with three potatoes, unbuttered, and a small handful of dry lettuce leaves. I would have been happy had this been in a cafe for lunch, but certainly not at that price, and it was a bit lacklustre for an evening meal. Overpriced.

“.....and relax!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2013 via mobile

Staying at batcombe campsite we decided to skip our usual campervan tea in favour of a stroll to the nearest pub, the three horse shoes. Firstly getting there was just a wonderful experience taking us through fields of cows, sheep and Shetland ponies! The pub itself is positioned next to the church, opposite a little park and from the outside this place looks idyllic. Inside this pub did not disappoint. Good variety of ales, helpful friendly staff and a mouth watering menu. We sat outside in the garden overlooking the church, and there we enjoyed fab food, lamb curry with okra, grilled halloumi and a child's fish and chips. Everything was fresh and flavoursome with a great view, happy staff, a good selection of board games and a great end to our holiday...., and relax!
