“A truly enjoyable experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2010

I visited Hawthorne house recently on a 10 day trip to New Zealand. I don't usually post reviews but felt compelled to do so on this occasion. We arrived on a Saturday and were greeted warmly by our hosts. The house itself was very spacious set amongst beautiful grounds. Although it was raining when we arrived this didn't do anything to spoil the first impression. The bedrooms were huge and a fire was on in the big living room. It had a really comfortable feel to the place and we were made to feel very welcome. The breakfast was also really delicious.
Its always nice to stay in a place and feel like you have got away from it all and I certainly felt that I had at this place. This was a great find and a place I'd definitely recommend to others.

My wife and I had a very relaxed weekend at this wonderful B&B. The charms of this period villa and those of our hosts Mike and Mel put us instantly at ease and in the mood to enjoy our weekend. Highlights of the weekend were a morning coffee admiring the first rays of morning sunshine on nearby ranges and enjoying an evening wine in front of the open fire. We will certainly return to Hawthorn House and recommend it to all as a fabulous luxury B&B destination in the heart of Hawkes Bay.

Wow, what a magical weekend. My husband and I travelled up from Wellington to stay at Hawthorne House, a B&B we'd heard of through friends. Our expectations were exceeded the minute we drove up the tree lined driveway - this looked like somewhere special.

I was a little anxious that a mid winter getaway to an old villa might be a little on the cold side, but our room was positively toasty, and the brand new bathroom's heated tiles were divine. The bed was everything I look for in any accomodation - king size, quality sheets, a selection of pillows and lovely feather duvet. It was difficult to get up each morning, but the scrambled eggs (from the free ranging chooks behind the house) and local Hawthorne coffee sure made things easier.

The house itself was beautiful. Mel & Mike, the proud owners certainly have an eye for detail and were the quintessential hosts. They certainly provided the right balance of great food & wine, hospitality and privacy to make for the perfect romantic getaway. Their local food/wine/shopping recommendations were spot on too.

We took our hosts up on their recommendation to visit the local Farmer's Market which had a tempting array of goodies, and were pleasantly surprised that although we chose to stay just outside Hastings, it was a quick trip into Napier for sightseeing.

I'd certainly recommend a mid winter trip to Hawthorne House - there is something special about relaxing in a comfortable, warm room in the countryside, enjoying great food and wine, and gazing out the window at new born lambs.

This was undoubtedly the loveliest long weekend of my life - everything about it was perfect.

Our hosts, Mike & Mel, had only recently purchased the B&B, and they could not have been more hospitable.

We were greeted with lovely tea & cake upon our arrival, and told some history about the house, as well as the area. There were some wonderful winery & restaurant recommendations that were exactly what we were looking for. The log fire lit each evening was the prefect place to enjoy that day's wine purchases!

Mike & Mel were the perfect hosts - there when you needed them, but not fussing about. There was not a request that was not met with a smile, nothing was too much trouble.

The B&B itself is a lovely Edwardian building, and the grounds, even during our winter visit, were a delight to stroll around. From the tree lined drive to the fruit trees growing out the back, it is a beautiful country property.

My room had an extremely comfortable king-sized bed, with a gorgeous canopy suspended above it. The new bathrooms were fantastic - I especially loved the bath products!

The reviews of Hawthorne House under the previous owners do not do it justice now - I had a wonderful time, would absolutely recommend it to friends: Hawthorne makes the ideal location to explore Hawke's Bay, and all that it has to offer.

Thoroughly recommended - I can't wait to go back!

We stayed here over the June long weekend and loved it. The new owners have really got Hathorne house back on track. Rooms were amazing, big comfy beds with elegant white linen, huge windows, beautifully maintained garden - everything a nice B&B should be. Must do's: Trivial Pursuit in front of the fire, and Mike's "Greek Eggs" (from their own free range chicken coop) for breaktast. A trip to Craggy Range Wines (among others) also highly recommended.

We drove up the treed driveway and arrived to a warm welcome from Robyn the new lodge manager. Previous negative reports reflect guests’ experiences with the earlier owner/mangers. We quickly settling into our spacious suite – the decor and the canopied king bed could come straight from an interior design magazine. Then Robyn and her mother Beverly served freshly baked Iced Lemon cake and coffee that we enjoyed on our private terrace. Before going out for dinner we were given focaccia bread topped with fresh asparagus and some of Robyn’s homemade pickles along with a glass of award-winning Pinot Gris – after all this is Wine country Hawkes Bay.
On our second day we did a tour of the vineyards and after tasting a number of wines arrived back at Hawthorne Country House not really wanting to go out for dinner. We asked Robyn if we could bring back takeaways and eat them in one of the outdoor pavilions. Imagine our surprise to arrive back and find the table set - wine glasses, napkins, tableware and silver plus candelabra. As it was my wife’s birthday Robyn had exceeded all our expectations.
Hawthorne Country House is a beautifully resorted grand Edwardian doctor’s house placed in sea of trees and gardens the Hawkes Bay countryside and yet only 10 minutes from the vineyards, Hastings, and the delightful village of Havelock North – fashion shops to tempt those in need of retail therapy!
YES Hawthorne Country House with Robyn as the exceptional hostess certainly ticks all the boxes.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights while on business in the Hawkes Bay. Our room was huge with a very comfortable King sized bed with beautiful linen, goose feather duvet and heaps of pillows - wished we could have slept in rather than going to work! The rooms have a 12 foot stud, full height sash windows with leadlights, polished wooden floors and private terrace. The service here was fantastic, every evening we were offered (and accepted) a glass of wine with the most devine bruschetta which as well as breakfast were inclusive in the room rate. Robyn the Manager and her mother who helps out were professional and friendly and provided many little extras (homemade morning and afternoon tea) that made us feel at home. Robyn is a marvelous cook and offered to cook an evening meal for us if we wished for a very reasonable charge. The location was great only about 5 minutes from the main centre in Hastings. It is fairly near the railway but we did not hear any trains in the time we stayed here and the house itself is quite a long way from the road and railway up a long driveway. My husband managed to get away for a game of golf which he said was fantastic. Overall a lovely relaxing, friendly place to stay for either business or pleasure, we will definately stay here again.
