“Just perfect.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

We only had a chance to stay at Hawthorne House for one night, but it was just perfect!

Stunning house, lovely comfortable room with a very comfortable bed, and the most amazing breakfast I've ever enjoyed - fresh bread, homemade strawberry jam and amazing French toast.

We'd love to go back and stay longer!

The Hawthorne House is a nice old villa from 1905. The rooms are very nice and big, we unfortunately selected the only one with an outdated bathroom, the other ones have been modernised.
There is a big lounge with sofas and a centered fireplace that invites to have a glass of wine and to read a book or prepare the trip. In summer it must be great to sit outside in on of the several verandas.
Breakfast is great and Mike is a fantastic host. All the food is home made and really delicious. Try the greek eggs, they are amazing.
Only downside of the place is the remote location, it is principly in the middle of nowhere. Considering this and compared to other places it is then a bit too pricey.
But definitely recommended, a great place to stay.

Room Tip: It might be with to pay the 15 NZD more to have a room with modern bathroom.

I can't say enough good things about our stay at Hawthorne House. We were blown away by the level of attention and comfort Mike offered! Wine and nibbles by the fire in the evenings and delicious breakfasts in the mornings were accompanied by his excellent conversation and spot-on recommendations of things to do in the area. We particularly loved that he features local wines and produce at the B&B - and also guided us to local farmers market and wineries to taste more for ourselves. This was the perfect way to recuperate after our first Great Walk. We never wanted to leave!

Celebrating our sisters 60th birthday with 6 sisters and 2 sister in laws with a Murder Mystery evening at Hawthorne House went beyond our expectations. The hospitality, outstanding accommodation with its warm welcome fire, crisp beds, delicious local cuisine and all those homemade jams, muffins, fruit, eggs, cheeses etc combined with our murder mystery banquet and with Mike's undivided attention to every detail resulted in a perfect and very memorable occasion. The best part is it was on our doorstep, no wonder I love New Zealand and exploring our own. Totally recommend the experience, definitely value for money. Thank you Mike and Hawthorne House - we will be back.

We have just had a wonderful night at Hawthorne House with a group of friends partaking in a Murder Mystery. From the time we arrived on a cold, dark and wet evening, we were pampered by our brilliant host, Mike, who saw to our every need. The fire was warm, the food and wine was delicious, the beds were fantastically comfortable - everything was superb. Mike was very knowledgeable about the history of the beautiful home. Delicious home baked bread, muffins and preserves complimented the full breakfast perfectly. What a great way to spend a winter weekend.

My husband booked this venue after hearing about their murder mystery nights advertised on the radio, it sounded like a bit of fun but we didn't know what to expect. We arrived to a roaring fire and an open bar. We were greeted by our wonderful host mike who gave us a quick run down of the nights game before leaving us to relax. We were treated to an amazing three course meal made with local produce while we were entertained with our murder mystery game. The accommodation was outstanding with beautifully decorated rooms, lovely comfortable beds and spotless bathrooms. After an amazing nights sleep we awoke to the smell of coffee and freshly made muffins for breakfast. Again delicious local produce was on offer with home made bread, jams and muffins as well as your choice of cooked breakfast, what a treat! We felt totally pampered at Hawthorne house, and can't wait to visit again. We will definitely be planning another night with some more friends.

Really glad we found this little gem. Being locals we were looking for somewhere special in the Bay to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We were warmly welcomed by Mike at the front door of this enchanting historic home. The wood fire and Devonshire tea awaited us in the lounge, followed later by a candlelit dinner for two in the dining room. Being the only guests at that time we felt spoilt especially having booked for dinner with our very own chef!
The room was comfortable with modern bathroom attached.
Mike lavished us with his own cooking for breakfast including a side of fresh bread and homemade jams made by his wife Mel.
Thanks for your wonderful hospitality!
