We stayed at Apple Motor Inn as a group of 15. We stayed in the lodge and were very happy with the accommodation provided. Staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble (even a late check inn was cheerfully accepted, nothing was a problem).
We had a large number of children and several supervisors. The lodge allowed separation of sexes and adults and children. It is self contained and separated from the motel complex.
We had 2 supervisors stay in the motel complex and their room was totally acceptable, just what you would expect from a motel of this type (budget). Clean, comfortable and great value.
The lodge itself is ‘comfortable’. It allows the group to relax with enough space for everyone to spread out and have their own space. While it is not 5 star it is tidy. Showers were great, plenty of hot water and good pressure meaning you could actually have an enjoyable shower!! The towels supplied were a little tired and I would probably suggest bringing your own. The lodge is (I think) aimed at the budget end and for large groups so while they are acceptable the more discerning may not enjoy the variety of quality, colours etc.
Bedding was bunks and single beds, all with sheets, pillow and duvets supplied. Bottom sheet and pillow cases were on, you did the rest. Bedding was clean and mattresses appeared clean (from what I saw). They were most certainly comfortable!! Some bunk sets were a little squeaky.
The kitchen was huge! Plenty of space to work. Although we did only breakfasts cooking for a large group would be a little challenging with the supplied equipment. The microwave didn't work but when checking out I mentioned this and this was met with gratitude for letting them know and I would be surprised if it wasn't replaced by the time I write this review (2 days later!). Some of the plugs in the kitchen also didn't work (forgot to mention this to the host). One tip would be to take a power board or two as there is a lack of plugs in the lodge (typical of buildings of that age, we didn't have cell phones, PSP, Mp3 players, etc that all need a pug back then). Without a power board there was often a queue for the few plugs in the lodge.
The lounge/dining area was spacious. Several couches and beanbags were available to crash on to watch TV (large panel TV wall mounted but no remote – but with a lodge full of kids who needs a remote!!). The space is big enough that the TV at one end didn't interrupt conversations at the other. The dining tables were plain with bench seats, very suitable and a great natural gathering point.
The train tracks are quite close (railway Road should be a dead give away!!) and yes you do here them but not frequent and just a fact of life, if that's a deal breaker then choose somewhere else.
Other reviews mention long term fruit pickers. There were none there during our stay but I could imagine this could be the largest use of this lodge. It would probably be off putting if you were there (in the motel complex) at the same time but for us this was not an issue. Cant blame the owners for paying the bills and if that means long term fruit pickers then that's what it takes.
Overall we were very happy with our stay and could not really fault the lodge for the type of accommodation it is. The motel complex looked tidy and for the budget conscious I would recommend. If you’re looking for 5 star luxury then keep driving but if you’re looking for good value family or large group accommodation I wouldn't go past Apple Motor Inn. We will be back again without a doubt (but not likely while there are fruit pickers onsite as we would require the lodge).
