“Total relaxation, total hospitality, in the most beautiful part of NZ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2010

Having spent a considerable length of time in a camper van, arriving at the White House was like stepping into heaven. Gorgeous location, beautiful house with a really welcoming atmosphere and a perfect room to escape from the camper van life!

Emma and Steve are the perfect hosts. Welcoming and friendly and full of helpful and fascinating info about the area and all sorts of things to do. Nothing was too much trouble. From arranging fishing trips, to BBQ's in the lovely back garden, the whole trip was one to remember. I'll definitely be back to escape the London rat race for a beer in the White House garden while counting the fruit trees...

Lovely rooms with beautiful modern ensuite. Sun deck availible for all guests. Fantastic garden to enjoy your breakfast (and what a great breakfast!) Great location, central yet quiet. Free internet. Service was sensational - nothing was a problem. Fantastic hosts, freindly and laid back. Finally somebody who understands the need for a late breakfast (if requested) when you are on holiday. They can also organise trips for you (and at the same price as the provider). I wouldn't go anywhere else when I'm in Russell.

We stayed at the White House for a week in November 09, and the only complaint was that we had to leave. Russell is a great place to ber anyway, and the White House is a great place to be in Russell. The accommodation is excellent - we both travel frequently for business and this rates up at 4-5 star easily - and Steve and Emma as generous but unobtrusive hosts made it just delightful. We will go back!

I have just returned from my 2nd visit to the White House in Russell. Having been there 2 and a half years ago I wasn’t expecting much to have changed and fortunately I was proved right (except the welcome addition of a travel shop beautifully added and ran by the host Emma). The house is as charming and welcoming as I remembered it and the hosts, Steve and Emma Jury, greeted my return as a delight for them, making me feel totally at ease and welcomed immediately – it made me wish it had not been so long since I had been there!
Russell too had stayed much the same, the dinning of a good quality and the environment simply stunning. I was only there for 3 days but I felt the stress of life evaporate from me as soon as the ferry docked. I wish I could have stayed there for longer but sadly had other places to go in NZ. The White House and Russell is undoubtedly worth a holiday in itself. I cannot recommend it any higher.

Just back from our second stay with Emma and Steve, and hope that we’ll be able to visit again in the not too distant future!
Loved the garden – recommend breakfasting outside, lovely setting, and take some time for a dip in the hot-tub. Rooms are lovely, and it’s great having a visitors lounge and Sky TV as well. All round good destination – friendly hosts, excellent accommodation and Russell is a lovely town.

I will admit not being a lover of Lodges, so you must take what I say about the White House with that in mind.
You arrive at the front of the place, it looks untidy, you then go via the back passageway to the back door, the garden looks untidy and generally the whole outside looks in need of care and attention. Once inside, you have the kitchen area which really is spotless and very nice, but the dining area, well, there just isn't the room to swing a cat, what it would be like with all three bedrooms in use and everyone attending breakfast at the same time, it wouldn't work.
Yes it is an old house, but we have been to older houses in New Zealand and whilst other places have maintained their charm and beauty, I didn't think this place had.
The bedrooms were nicely decorated, good sized en-suite, but the room was not very big.
There was free wi-fi, always welcomed. Breakfast was ok. Emma & Steve were very pleasent, Emma being able to book excursions etc.
It is located in the 3rd road back from the beachfront, no more than 5 mins walk, but there are other places better located.
We ate at Bountys Bistro and the Duke of Marlborough Hotel, both nice meals, reasonable prices and especially Bountys Bistro, which appears to be used by a lot of the locals.
Russell is a lovely place, lots of walks and great nearby beaches.

With our generous breakfast times from 8-12 and only 6 people staying at any one time it is very rare guests all have breakfast at once. We have a dining room table which seats 4, a breakfast bar which seats 2, 2 outside tables which seat 6 each and seating for 6 on our upstairs deck for a more private breakfast. Due to our kind weather we generally eat breakfast outside. We are sorry that this guest didn't enjoy his time here.

The White House is on a quiet side street, close to the sea. Emma and Steve really makes you feel at home without intruding.
The decoration is very nice with some ingenious touches like peebles embedded in the floor in the bathroom, a touch sensitive bedside lamp, ...
Overall a very nice stay.
