“If heading back to Russell we would definitely stay & dine at The Duke”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2010

Our stay at The Duke was top notch with the food and the seaside location the major highlights. Our family of four stayed in the self contained bungalow which was perfect for our young family - independence but also very handy to all the amenities, although with the meals being so good in the restaurant we did not go near the stove!

We stayed for four nights and ate at The Duke for lunch and dinner - hard to pick out a favorite however strongly recommend the Ika Mata and the seafood chowder in a cob loaf - outstanding. The meals were equal or better to any you would find in top restaurants around NZ, with very obliging & friendly staff.

Russell is a great place to go for either relaxing or exploring, we did a bit of both.

If heading back to Russell we would definitely stay and dine at The Duke, thanks!

After visiting this Hotel in the past and having a poor experience We thought we would never return. HOWEVER after hearing the grand old lady of Russell had new owners who were proving themselves to be pro active and not reactive we thought we would give the property another chance and we are glad we did,What an improvement ! the whole place was cleaner, the food in the restaurant rivaled most city restaurants we have dined in and the staff were friendly and helpful. The new restaurant that used to be the sad looking function room has really given the the place an edge over some of the other eatery's in Russell.
The rooms upstairs overlooking the Bay have had a long over due face lift giving a modern contemporary twist to the property the old with a hint of new with out going overboard and ruining the character of the building.
We would most certainly go back and stay again and a large thumbs up to the new owners for all their hard work and vision to reinstate the fantastic old property back to its former glory and returning the jewel back into the crown of Russell
Possum.

I stayed for three nights (in room 8). The room was great as it had a balcony that overlooked the water. I ate at the restaurant each night. They have employed the former head chef of Jervois Steak House in Auckland and the food was simply superb. The new owners are giving the hotel much needed and comprehensive renovations. The restaurant and dining room and the guest rooms have been finished, with work being done in other areas. This was not noticeable during the day and did not affect my sleep at night. The location is unbeatable as it is right on the waterfront and the staff are really friendly and helpful. I will definitely stay there again - I had a magic few days.

I've travelled to Russell a few times, but have only ever had a drink in the Duke. Having recently refurbished part of the hotel, they offered a discount on accommodation that we took advantage of. We travelled in November which is prior to the high season, but a time of year when the weather warms up.

We stayed in Room 4, which is a waterfront room on the end of the building. It's one of the only rooms with a balcony and it offers 270 degree views. The room is spacious and decorated in a white theme - white walls, curtains, crisp white sheets etc. with a large hand-painted crest of the hotel above the bed.

The hotel itself is large and is built in the colonial style. It’s built entirely of wood and sits on the water edge. There's lots of chandeliers, wood panelling, old photographs etc and it gives an old fashioned but majestic feel. You can imagine the Victorian women in their bustle dresses dancing in the ballroom.

The town itself is an old whaling port with the local museum and the historic Christ Church just a short walk away. Russell reminds me of the small towns in New England, which ironically is where a lot of the whalers who lived in the town, came from.

The Duke is the focal point of the town. It’s a beautiful building with great views. It serves fabulous food and the staff are very professional. It’s also where we will be staying next time we visit to Russell.

We arrived the day after Labour day and the hotels was very quiet and was obviously still being prepared for the season. Our room was spacious and had views over the bay and a balcony for sipping the sundowners on.
Reception was good and the food quality was excellent let down a bit by the service, however it was the first week of new staff and it was obvious they were learning, however the hotel has a sight to die for.

Wow - what can I say. We found this place, which is literally a stone throw from the beach and stayed for 2 nights while exploring the amazing activities in this area. The beer was cold, a great wine selection and the food was outstanding. The staff where helpful with some suggestions about activities in the area and happy to go out of the way to make sure we had a great weekend.
I would reccomend this place to anyone coming to visit Russell
