“Fabulous food & so quaint”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

Took advantage of GrabOne deal - fantastic value, so husband & I had lovely break. The staff were great, receptionist & barman had great sense of humour & made us feel very welcome. Maitre d was very professional, waitress a tad too casual for "you guys" - but the food was wonderful. The room was clean, warm & ready before check in time. I loved the furnishings in the room & the new bathroom fittings. I would definitely recommend & visit again. Enjoyed the Friday early evening with the live music & locals sitting on the covered deck.

We had often passed by this hotel or come in for a drink but this is the first time we actually stayed. We really enjoyed our short break of 2 nights. The staff were all great, from reception thru to Restaurant thru to cleaning. The staff obviously enjoy their jobs which means the management are doing a great job too.

The food was excellent - Breakfast, Bar meal and Dinner in the evening. All presented beautifully with exquisite flavours. The waiters and Waitresses were all very friendly and informative about the food and general knowledge of the history of the place.

We found the atmosphere very relaxing and even though there was an upgrade taking place, it was not obvious to us as clientele. The staff covered for this very well.

We thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the restaurant relaxing to wonderful live music the first night. The views are magnificent and the sunsets are exceptional.

Took lots of photos of the local area - you could spend a whole day photographing the old fig tree out front. You have to see it to believe it.

A lift may be helpful for carrying suitcases, but we understand that this was not the way the hotel was built originally, and so we appreciate this may happen at a later date as the upgrades continue.

Room Tip: The front rooms have an incredible view. We had a side room, but could enjoy the view from the dinin...

Stopped here at short notice while passing through Russell. The Sundeck room was on a 25% discount and hence much better value than the other accommodation in town. Restaurant was fine - good service - but could have had a more interesting menu.

Breakfast was continental, and fine.

Would stay here again; the location (on the waterfront) and ambience are excellent.

Room Tip: Choose an upstairs room.

Wow! We were lucky enough to spend a night here an it was an absolute treat. We ate dinner in the restaurant and it was delicious! We started with the mussels and then had the steak meal for two - there is plenty to share and it was cooked to perfection! Stayed in one of the small rooms, but plenty big enough for two, and it was lovely. Noise does travel in the hotel but it is an old building and we stayed on a Saturday night so it's understandable! Would highly recommend.

Beautiful setting on the waterfront, although unfortunately our room overlooked people in the room opposite who were dining in the courtyard outside our window. Very helpful and friendly staff. Room very comfortable, except that a doorway only 18 inches wide to the bathroom seems a little odd, and there is nowhere within the bathroom to put down a brush or toothpaste, etc. Wifi for accessing the internet was free and good connection, but had been set up so that I could receive my business email, but not send it - a little frustrating. The first night we dined in their restaurant: he ordered steak but was not asked how he liked it. On arrival of the meal he asked the waiter why not and was told that unless specifically requested otherwise it is always served medium-rare. On cutting into it we found it was clearly medium-well done. The waiter's response? "It's just because of the poor lighting". Yeah right! The second waiter came along and we mentioned the problem to him. His response? "It's just because of the poor lighting". Standard sales patter, perhaps. My chicken was mostly fine, but the meat close to the bone was uncooked. Waiter's response? "It's just because it was pasteurised at a low temperature". Uncooked chicken to me is just uncooked chicken and should never be served. Given the waiters' responses we did not expect nor were we offered any consideration for the poor quality of the meals. However, we enjoyed our stay and remembered old times there.

Room Tip: Russell tends to shut down over the winter months, and finding places like vineyards and alternative...

We stayed at the Duke recently for three nights for a wedding, fantastic food, excellent service. Incredibly helpful and friendly staff. Well done, we had a very memorable and enjoyable stay.
My only gripe, you seriously need to upgrade the kids menu. Three different options of something fried with chips or tinned spaghetti, c'mon. Healthy options for our little people please. Put your fantastic chefs to work, if the kids food was even half as good as the adults menu's it would be amazing.

Room Tip: If you are travelling with a family, make sure you ask for a larger room. We had a Balcony room, que...
