“Very nice, historical beauty.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2011

We got a 3 nights for the price of 2 deal that they ran over the off season. We had a sun deck room ( no 3) Very airy and light and the deck got plenty of morning sun. We liked the double french doors that opened onto the deck. The bathroom was huge and it was very clean and tidy. Staff were friendly and eager to please.
Nice and peaceful and quiet at this time of year. The restaurant meals were very tasty.

We'd consulted Tripadvisor over where to stay (we were getting away with out the kids for the first time since our eldest child was born in 2008) so we wanted to get it right. Were not sure whether to choose the more expensive lodge style accommodation versus a view directly over the water. Were worried over various previous poor reviews of Duke of Marlborough, but really wanted the location so we went for DOM. Looking back, we wonder what exactly past reviewers were expecting. The hotel was exactly as you would expect from a "Grand Old Lady" - a beautifully presented old colonial building, which frankly we thought was hard to beat. We jumped on the winter special, (3 nights for the price of 2) and stayed in Room 4, which although smaller than the other waterfront rooms, was more than adequate for a couple, had a great view from the quiet corner of the hotel, and a balcony. (Room 8 also has a balcony apparently, and we also popped our head in the door of room 5 (the bigger room) whilst it was being cleaned, and were similarly impressed. They're recently refurbed, and really nice, and whilst no, it's not Huka Lodge or The Ritz, it's not a city mission either as some reviews led us to believe. The walls could maybe be thicker - we were woken by kids in the next room one morning, but only because they were yelling and jumping on the bed. One of the moans we'd read on TA was about the breakfast, so were not expecting much. I assure you the breakfast is above average for a "continental" - and it's free. Freshly diced fruit (as opposed to from a tin), several cereals and types of bread, spreads, pastries and amazing range of tea (tea range also available in your room). All served in the main dining room, which is simply fantastic, and also provided a great meal. The food was great too when we ate at dinner time. Frankly we cannot see how this hotel has so many poor reviews, the two couples who own it now seem really likeable and down to earth - typical Kiwis - and the one thing I know about being in a people business is the face of the business is important - they run the ship themselves and were fantastic we thought. I also know that usually you only write about something when you have a bad experience, which might explain the past reviews, so let me reverse that trend, we had a simply awesome time and want others to know. And Russell is simply awesome too for some R & R.

Seafront room a must, overlooking the sea through pohutakawa trees and at night the lights from the wharf glowing gently. Very romantic setting and the food ..... Mouth watering delights. Great wine selection and cocktails made to order. Staff are very friendly and the room was spotless with lovely linen and good quality towels and complimentary toiletries, Chandeliars everywhere create great ambviance
I would love to stay there again and have no qualms recomending to others

In June 2011 we had a very pleasant lunch at the restaurant of The Duke of Malborogh : the service by the boss was very nice and the food was original and well-prepared (a special “bravo” for this excellent idea: the basil ice cream with the salad “tomatoes mozzarella”.)

And if you are in Russell go up to the Eagle nest, just to enjoy the breathtaking view!

For a nightly rate of $200 our room was a shoe box, the food was less than average. It should be so much more for such a lovely location in Russell

The Duke was a perfect winter escape. Warm fires, cosey lounge and live music in a covered porch. Our room was simply but tastefully decorated with uninterrupted views of the bay. Watching the weather (and the boats) roll in from the bed was pure relaxation. The dinner restaurant food was lovely (albeit a bit rich) but the continental breakfast (included) was somewhat lacking. Service was friendly and efficient. Would definately recommend.

Best location in Russell right on the waterfront. Old hotel with real character. Rooms nice but starting to get a bit tired. Ask for room 4 if possible, light filled, waterfront views and great little balcony, lovely to draw the curtains in the morning to that view.
Restaurant was great, a little on the pricey side but thats Russell I suppose. Magical start to our trip, cant wait to go back.

Thanks you for your comments – we are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay at The Duke. Room 4, like all the waterfront rooms has a exceptional view of the bay and along with room 8 has a small balcony. This is the perfect place to admire the sunset with a wine. We look forward to seeing you again
