“AMAZING STUNNING PERFECT”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

I had my wedding at matauwhi with the ceremony out on the lawns out on the cliff with all the guests facing the beautiful views. It was very intimate and so romantic!
I had the reception dinner in a completely lit up marquee on the hill behind the manor again overlooking the views but also the grounds and manor-so perfect!
Then we had the rest of the evening inside the manor with the stunning decor including chandeliers and candles everywhere.
It was the most perfect day of my life and the food was delicious! I wouldn't change a thing!
The staff were so accommodating, helpful and friendly. Constantly going out of their way to make everything perfect.

Breaking the urban bubble doesn’t have to be camping and tramping. We also deserve to pamper ourselves with elegance, masterful feasts and impeccable treatment, three things that Russell’s Matauwhi Bay Manor has in bountiful supply.

After a smooth drive up to historic Russell we turn onto a step, gravel and wind through the dense native bush, with nothing to prepare us for the opulent site around the final bend.

A grand white house stretches out through a picture-perfect lawn overlooking Matauwhi Bay, an intimate inlet looking west to busy Paihia. Although the finely sculptured land adds to the grandeur, the scale of the massive home is nothing compared to the tactile glory within.

We pass over the marble entranceway, greeted by Naomi Munro who runs the Manor with her husband Ben, son of the owners who bought the estate in 2008 from the original couple who lovingly built it over ten years. The meticulous detail and masterful bespoke woodwork clearly state that no expense was spared in its creation. The sheer weight of the solid wood doors or the immense ensuite bathrooms clad in Italian marble give barely a glimpse of the major investment made. I won’t bore by listing all the features, though one of the thrills of being a guest includes uncovering the robust details for oneself.

After a stroll down to their private beach, we settle in to enjoy one of the Manor’s astounding offerings – a four-course meal by none other than Ben, a 2011 MasterChef New Zealand contestant.

Originally from Tauranga, Ben’s life hasn’t always been spent in front of a stove. He was part of the construction boom in Dubai for eight years but had always wanted to cook, with a dream of someday owning his own restaurant. To see where his dream could go, Ben worked six days a week while studying on his off day at the International Centre for Culinary Arts (ICCA) in Dubai. Ben’s now enjoys fusing cuisines, with as much of the raw goodness as possible drawn from the area, including the garden out back.

The evening’s feast kicks off with exciting bites that include a chicken and mushroom mousse on heart-shaped crostini and prawn and mango salsa spoons. We then step up to our impressive starters, all with a nod to the fruitful waters nearby. They include a fresh seafood combo on creamy risotto brimming with tomato flavour, succulent pan-seared scallops and an oyster-lovers dream… plump and buttery Orango Bay oysters farmed just kilometres away, each a fat pillow of soft meat served with fresh, flaming hot Tobasco salsa.

We wash back round two with a Kiwi white from their cellar that boasts varieties from both sides of the Tasman until our impressive mains appear representing land, sea and air. With fennel-encrusted skin, the huge salmon fillet is perfectly medium rare; the ruby-red lamb melts on the tongue, a stunning marriage with kumara rosti and pea mash. As for the duck, the meaty breast is packed with gamey goodness, punctuated by port and dark cherry jus. Scrumptious.

We split the three desserts, with no clear winner named. The passionfruit tart made from last-season’s fruit off the grand vine outside is a standout, although the fragile yet boozy espresso and Kahlua tiramisu equally rocks. I also have to mention the choco and mint mousse but again, you need to discover Ben’s hand-made treats by diving in.

Matauwhi Bay Manor is an epic event in every sense – the ultimate intimate escape and idyllic wedding destination. So far this season they’ve had two weddings at the Manor, the largest hosting 70 people. Four more weddings are booked this season meaning word is spreading about this stellar venue.

Only two years in, the evolution of their business begs the occasional hand and seasoned gay chef Les Bremner is their guy, having cut his culinary teeth at Auckland’s GPK and Galbraith’s Microbrew Ale House before moving to Russell seven years ago. Les enjoys supporting Ben with major functions, saying: “Working with Ben is great because his ideas are fresh and vibrant; he makes food that looks good and uses only the best ingredients.”

You know, I can still taste those buttery oysters and see that picturesque Kiwi setting long after. For any type of escape, Naomi and Ben’s place overlooking the Matauwhi Bay is unlike any other. Grandeur and gourmet pampering await, with much of its unmentioned magic left for you to discover yourself.

We have just had the best two nights in Matauwhi Bay Manor for our 50th birthdays. Gorgeous gardens, luxury accommodation, lovely hostess (Naomi), private boat and skipper (Warwick who was generous with both his local knowledge and his fish) for sightseeing and fishing trip, and absolutely delicious food cooked by host (chef Ben). My husband caught his first fish ever (a handsome snapper). Lying in the twin spa bath, sipping a glass of wine, looking out over the harbour, after eating our own snapper caught less than an hour before, is a memory I will cherish. We were the fortunate recipients of a voucher and booked in May but then had to cancel due to family bereavements. However the voucher was still honoured way past its expiry date and we hugely appreciated that. Thank you so much Naomi, Ben, and Warwick. We'll definitely be back. We can’t rate Matauwhi Bay Manor highly enough. You’ll be very sorry if you don’t go!

Just spent the most delightful 3 days at Matauwhi Bay Manor (MBM). Hosts, Bruce and Diana Munro have created a spendid luxurious exclusive "home" which lacks for nothing. Gracious, considerate and professional in every way our hosts, as well as family members Naomi and Ben truely provided a memorable stay. Dinner and breakfast is a treat when Ben's cooking, Naomi's attention to detail and forethought is refreshing and quality and service abounds. We went fishing with Bruce aboard Aroha IV and had the most successful "catch" ever. We ate what we caught thanks to Ben. One of the nicest stays ever. One of the nicest properties visited worldwide and an absolute treat to stay at MBM. Highly recommended for those seeking a memorable getaway.

We chose Matauwhi Bay Manor for our Christmas function. From the time we were met by a welcoming staff member to transport us from the Russell wharf to the Manor we were overwhelmed with the service and professionalism.

Chef Ben served a magnificent trilogy of canapes, turkey and hand made dessert finished off with port and brewed coffee.

Mine hosts exceled themselves. Thank you Matauwhi Bay Manor for sharing such a wonderful experience with us. Highly recommended for those looking to be wowed !!!
