“Beautiful secluded accommodation in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2012

We had just 1 night at Bellrock Lodge in January 2012. It was perfect for a peaceful, private and quite luxurious overnight in Russell. The room was lovely - it seemed virtually brand new. Quality fixtures and fittings, a gorgeous bathroom, well equipped kitchen (you could be self-contained if you wanted to be) and a glass wall which completely opens up to a private balcony with fantastic elevated views down across the bay to Paihia.

We enjoyed a bottle of champagne on the balcony as the sun dipped lower and then strolled down into Russell for a delicious dinner. Followed by the remnants of the Champers and chocolates. Ahh the decadence!!

Following a very full and tasty breakfast we had a nice chat with Peter and Lorraine - a lovely couple who are obviously very passionate about their lodge and their visitors.

Our only gripe was with the somewhat misshapen magnolia tree which partially blocked the view from our room. Only after opening the topic did we realise that this had clearly been discussed between them before (!!), so after some vigourous and very entertaining discussion I think we managed to add some weight to Peter's argument that it had to go...

Apparently Lorraine finally let Peter loose with the chain saw. Go Peter!!!

Look forward to seeing you again some time,
Simon & Jo

Room Tip: They're all good (so long as the magnolia has disappeared from in front of unit 2...!!!)

Up on a hill overlooking the quaint and historic town and waterfront of Russell, Bellrock Lodge is a classy small B&B that has been completely renovated with high-quality furnishings. We had an awesome view even from inside our tastefully decorated and comfortable room, let alone from the huge, wrap-round balcony, and the bathroom was both large and well-equipped. Great shower! Take the time to chat with delightful owners Lorraine and Peter, who re-located from South Africa about three years ago. Highly recommended, so check them out at www.russellbnb.co.nz .

Hint: if you plan on reaching Russell by the short car ferry ride from Paiea, be aware that the last run is at 10pm. We almost missed it, which would have meant an enormous detour.

Room Tip: No need to worry which room you get, as they all have great views, but #4 has the extra-large wrap-r...

I have stayed in Russell three times, in three delightful places, but this was definitely the best in terms of location, facilities and value for money. There are only four units, but these have been designed with a visitor's every desire in mind. Each unit is a generous size, with a large bathroom and a kitchenette which does not intrude into the main area. There is a beautiful wooden floor throughout and glass doors onto a private decked area with breathtaking views of the Bay. In the main room there is a king size bed (or twins) with high quality bedding. There is a large TV with DVD player (you can borrow DVDs) and a music player, plus free wifi. We also had leather armchairs which we never used because we preferred to be out on the deck.
The bathroom has twin washbasins and a huge shower area with a powerful shower. The towels were large white and fluffy.
We did not cook in the kitchenette, but it seemed to have everything you might need, including a microwave and two rings plus crockery etc for four. Milk was provided every day, plus a generous supply of chocolate biscuits!
Peter and Lorraine were extremely kind and helpful. Lorraine booked us a day on a yacht in the Bay ( the "Phantom", recommended) and they suggested other trips we might like to make. As others have written, we were invited for drinks and canapés. We thoroughly enjoyed talking to them and the green-lipped mussels were divine! Otherwise we did not spend much time in the guests' lounge, but it was a beautiful room, surrounded by decking with the same fabulous views of the Bay, a guests' barbecue and a dining table for six.
The location in Russell is ideal. It's just a short stroll downhill into the centre of the village.

From the way we were greeted on the phone to the warm and personal farewell when we left, Peter & Lorraine made us feel welcome from the start. Russell is a stunning time capsule for New Zealand, and the location at Bellrock, nested on the hill overlooking the bay and endearing town makes you feel like you really embrace the experience. The wonderful balcony with sliding stack doors allowed us to welcome the vista right into our space and made our stay much more immersive and connected. You get to feel the transition of the day, and the mood flow through from morning to night. It was only a quick 2 min walk to get to the waters edge and enjoy the romantic, old-worldly charms Russell has to offer. The only down side was having to leave! Thank you both for such a wonderful compliment to our Bay of Islands experience!

We found the Bellrock literally through stumbling over it on another website and immediately went onto this website where the reviews were universally glowing. We contacted Bellrock directly and were so impressed with Lorraines natural welcoming manner that we arranged to stay for a couple of nights. We turned up and were greeted like old friends and shown to our room. There are only 4 large ensuite rooms all with balconies overlooking the harbour. The rooms are large, very nicely arranged with fantastic amenities and the view is out of the this world.
There is a large guest lounge upstairs with a bar and a verandah area a large part of which overlooks the harbour. The lounge is large enough that even if with full occupancy if everyone was in there it wouldn't feel claustrophobic.
We didn't have the breakfast.
The room servicing was daily and was to a very high standard.
Lorraine and Peter had a Saturday night drinks and canapes which was fun, a great chance to meet fellow guests and get to know your hosts, which often doesn't happen. It was lovely and relaxed (this helped by Peter's ample pouring of wines!)
What we really liked about Bellrock is that you felt you could relax, do your thing and there was not a pervading atmosphere of being in someone elses home. They have a few things like wine from the bar, washing powder in the laundry that work on an honesty system and I think this sums up the general ethos. Bellrock is a home away from home, we can't recommend it highly enough and my only major turmoil with writing such a glowing report is that in two years time when we go back Bellrock might have put there prices up!!!

Room Tip: All four rooms are good

When choosing the perfect location and accommodation for our wedding anniversary and much-overdue rest and relaxation, we wanted it all! My wife and I have extremely high standards, so it was a big ask! We wanted a peaceful, tranquil setting, with stunning scenery, beautiful sea views, within easy walking distance to amenities, the charm of yesteryear, yet modern, clean, quiet accomodation with all the creature comforts.

Our expectations were totally exceeded, in every way. Not only is the Bellrock Lodge set in absolute paradise, it is perfectly positioned amidst beautiful bush, with stunning views from your room out over the the bay of Russell. The sunrises and sunsets were breathtaking. Our room was spacious, extremely clean, modern and oh so comfortable.

Lorraine and Peter are the perfect hosts. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Whether it was enjoying drinks and divine nibbles with other guests, arranging our activities, cooking us a beautiful braai meal, or all the little extra touches that made our stay so special, we could not have asked for better hosts. They take hospitality in New Zealand to a whole new level of excellence! We loved their companionship, kind, caring and gracious hospitality!

We will most definitely be back and recommend the Bellrock to the discerning traveller and holiday maker who wants an exceptional experience.

Room Tip: All rooms have stunning sea views!!
