“Very clean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2011

The lodge was very clean and the service of the owners was terrific, we asked if they had a BBQ and they wheeled one right tothe apartment straight away. We enjoyed the BBQ in the sunset , as the lodge is facing toward the afternoon sun. All the utensils were there. The room was very clean, could not fault the cleanliness in any way, not a speck of dust or dirt to be found! The beds were so comfortable and pillows devine, what a great nights sleep we all had! Close to shops for small suppliessnd bigger shops a good 45 min walk, we walked there and taxi'ed back. Beautiful lodge, shame it is on the main road, however a 10 min walk and you right on the beach. If you have a car, it is close to everything wonderful that Nelson has to offer. Thank you for great service!

This is a very well kept motel, we had a lovely one bedr0om unit with everything in tip top condition and very clean, it is one of the best units we have stayed in during our 8 weeks in New Zealand. The motel is on a busy road but the units are set well back from the road and we did not have any noise disturbance from traffic at night

After travel through the South Island staying at motels, Abelia has by far some of the best beds I've ever slept in. Highly recommended.

A great Motel. The lady was really friendly. The unit was very clean and quiet. I heard no sounds from the units next to mine and they were booked. I found no fault at all, the price was good, this is not a 5 star unit, but worth staying in.
I travel a lot for work, so I like a clean nit and I could not fault this one.
As far as smells go, you have to understand that a lot of water in NZ is mineral water, so if the unit is closed up, it may have a smell, but once doors and windows are open and it's lived in.. all is ok.

Would recommend this Motel to anyone who wants a clean quiet unit. I had no trouble with traffic noise and I am a light sleeper , or getting across the road or on to it with my car.

This is nice simple motel in a busy commecial area away from downtown. our room was very clean, the staff very friendly and helpful. There's not much around worth walking to, but its price was reasonable, in a good location if you have a car and the room was more than comfortable and clean.

I booked this hotel based on some positive TripAdvisor reviews - big mistake. The motel's location isn't a problem if you have a car, but there is nothing touristy close by and it is on a industrial business type street.

There is no elevator and it is a pain taking the windy stairs to the second level.

The rooms are fairly clean but you can see from the decor that the owners cut corners wherever they could - not a problem if you're paying less than $100 per night but otherwise look elsewhere - it's all about value for money. Internet costs $10/night ... most motels offer internet for free.

The biggest problem we encountered was the stench. Obviously they've had a lot of smokers in their non-smoking rooms and they've over-compensated with air fresheners - don't know what's worse the original smokers stench or the coverup. Anyway, it made us sick and our clothes smell like we've been in a smoky casino or public urinal too long.

The location of this motel is not good so expect to drive anywhere you need to go. The view of a pulp mill and watching the smoke rising in the distance was also not appetizing and gave us a poor intro to Nelson.

Be careful about booking via Wotif website as better deals can be found by negotiating on phone, especially if late checkin. Lots of motels in Nelson so unless there's a special event during high season, there are lots of alternatives when you arrive.

  • Liked — Free parking
  • Disliked — Smelled awful, rooms had cheap decor you'd expect from hourly rental motel

The Abelia Motor Lodge was a nicely-run, small motel on the outskirts of Nelson, near Tahunanui beach. The rooms are clean and modern, and the cooking facilities well maintained. The motel resides along one of the main roads into the center of Nelson. This is both a good and bad thing. It allows easy access to the town centre but the road can be busy during the daily rush hour, to and from work.

I found the hosts friendly and open and would return to the Abelia again.
