“Go see this !!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

Went for a drive to Harwoods Hole in September from Blenheim, so glad I went, This piece of country is amazing, The Lord of the Rings has a snippet of the forest in the movie so my sister tells me ( jenny ) the drive from Blenheim goes through some lovely scenery and when you leave the road to go to Harwoods hole its 11 kms on a gravel road, its very small especially if another car is coming the other way but well worth it.
Theres a car park at the end and it's a 45min walk to the hole and it isn't hard, theres markers on the trees to show the way, its like a dry riverbed you walk in after you leave the trees, climbing over rocks and fallen trees, I had forgotten how much I love the NZ bush ! When you get to the hole be careful it's not fenced and it's a looooong way down ! Just walking to the hole was amazing, It's the longest vertical drop in NZ ( I read that somewhere ) do yourself a favour and go see this. We carried on to Golden Bay and had something to eat then went back to Blenheim. The Takaka Hill is really not a hill more like the backbone of the alps and the views, beaches, springs, towns are what NZ is all about.

“A great walk for all ages and abilities”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

You step straight into this beautiful forest and it makes you feel like you know it from somewhere. It's moss covered tree trunks and winding path ever so peaceful and flat, great for all ages and abilities. You continue on till you get to these big granite boulders where you have to weave and perhaps climb a little bit, yet you are continually drawn on by the shapes and shadows the boulders and trees are creating. Then you climb over giant boulders in order to have a glimpse of the 'hole' which is an immense upward and downward tube of rocks and you hear the rushing of water and it has the ability to make you feel so insignificant and yet satisfied to reach the end of the path.

And on the walk back, you might just realize where you have seen this from!! Lord of the Rings and in the Hobbit! And that just makes you walk away even more satisfied from the whole walk.

“Great walk into another world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

A good walk, and not for the faint hearted, but you feel like you are walking into another world, and you are rewarded once you reach the hole, this is an amazing spot, and it sent shivers down my spine at its amazing structure & awesome surroundings.

“Slippery at the edge, be careful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

We walked about 40 minutes through the forest to Harwood Hole. The rocks you climb on in order to see the hole were icey and slippery. You couldnt see right to the bottom but you were able to get an understanding of the sheer size of the cave! The walk to the lookout on the way back is worthwhile. Beautiful view over the valley.
